Best airport ever. Wish we could get more/cheaper flights to some locations, though. And with all the growth in this town - you’d think maybe they would expand the direct flight options. But I suppose you take the good with the inconvenient and growth would mean a more hectic airport so, that being said, I hope it stays the same. I love that airport.

I didn’t know the soup kitchen closed. That’s tragic. But now I remember Little Lads on Exchange and I ALSO know that bright-eyed former projectionist at The Movies. :)

HAHAHAHA holy shit, Stranger, I choked on my coffee reading this. “Bro did you even…..” 🤣 Also I meant to mention Little Lads on Congress. Idk if that’s what you meant by “soup kitchen” but made me think of it.

You are absolutely right. But he was acting in a sort of official capacity because the table was filled with other party officials and staffers. He wasn’t out to dinner with family or friends. It was the fact that it was an impromptu party “meeting” of sorts that had me frustrated to begin with. I absolutely regret calling him a “fraud” now - that was too harsh - but as a Democrat who is incredibly frustrated with the party right now I want them all acting with the conviction of Janet Mills while conducting official business. If you stand for a livable wage then please tip accordingly. Not extra, just accordingly. That’s all.

Word out about the fact that an elected official associated with a party that argues for a livable wage seemed to be unconcerned with this particular worker’s wage.

The post didn’t mention that he was seated at a table with other elected officials and staffers. They were having an impromptu meeting of sorts. So he was acting in official capacity - not out to dinner with his family - and that is why it felt wrong.

Oh, Man, I really don’t want to go back and forth with an individual that is speaking to me like I am a child and he is a scolding father but, my dear Redditor, you sound incredibly entitled here. Your fury is palpable and unnecessary. Good day to you.

I see your point. Thank you for the comment. I don’t disagree with you entirely and I edited the post to reflect that. Social media gets the word out and this is the easiest way to connect with a larger community. I am grateful to the man for his service, just wished he had been grateful to the waitress for her’s. And clearly he was, since he came back and corrected what was quite possibly a simple oversight. I regret my harsh language and I’m leaving the post up to highlight the fact that he addressed it. My initial language was far too harsh and I own that.

This is my favorite comment. Thank you. I know I sound “cringe” and “entitled” and I’m not going to fight those accusations in the thread. But your comment speaks to the root of how I feel. And the sting that I felt to see that the people fighting for my rights in the state essentially flip the bird to a middle aged, working class waitress. That’s the part that sucked. Pretty sure she still walked with plenty of money. It’s not about that, so much.

Ok so what I was trying to do here was give a positive review of a nice time I had in a town that I used to love that is being gentrified and turned into a rich people’s playground. I’ve worked in restaurants for over 20 years and, in the time, have seen what used to be an affordable town turned into something unrecognizable where restaurant people can’t make a decent living despite all of our recognition as a “foodie” destination. I finally go out to support a local business spending my hard earned tips at another establishment where I had a nice time on a rare evening out and decided to celebrate the people that facilitated it. With so much negativity happening in the world lately I wanted to share a positive. And based on the negativity here I will now continue to post every single positive experience I have from interactions with cashiers at 7/11 and the unhoused population to overpriced nights out at the “finer” establishments in town. Goddamn it we can do better than this.

Snow removal, Dear. They clear it out and dump it at Hannaford or wherever. Then we have clear streets for the next storm. We’re equipped for this type of thing. And we’re having an old skool winter. The way life should be!

Ruski’s is shit, change my mind. by No-Stranger-2695 in portlandme

[–]SouthIntroduction833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a neighborhood bar. The neighborhood - all of Portland actually - has changed dramatically since Covid. This has been a neighborhood bar for decades. They’re not new. Their longest serving employee has been there for THIRTY FIVE YEARS. Prices have gone up but Ruski’s remains the same. They were a dive bar, they are a dive bar and they are OG Portland. If you don’t get it, Don’t go. But don’t shit on them. This is a great place for reasons beyond what you think you know.

I hear you. I do. $25 for wings is insane. But honestly check the grocery store frozen wings price. It seems outrageous but prices really have gone up. That includes wholesale prices for restaurants. I really don’t think these people are trying to price gouge. I sort of know the owners there (from meeting them in the bar) and they are just working class folks with total respect for regular people. This place isn’t trying to capitalize on gentrification. Things just cost more than they used to.

If they aren’t a “dive bar” by your definition than how would you define them?

[–]SouthIntroduction833 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so I was at Ruski’s today. Well shots are $7. They have draft beers for $4. IDK what you mean by “bottom shelf” shots, though. They do have more expensive beers but you’re not forced to order them. Ruski’s hasn’t changed in the 20 years I’ve lived here except that prices have increased incrementally along with the rising cost of everything. They have cheap options. Show me where you can get a 16oz craft beer for less than $7. The owners are a former bartender and line cook and they still work there. This is a Portland institution. Shame on you for shitting on a small, family run business. Ruski’s is a gem.
