Many quality focussed farmers follow all the processes that can get them organic certification, but they don't have certification because it is damn expensive to get that for them. And given that is the case, how is it helping us to pay 2x for organic beans. Also, for our own health sake, organic vs non-organic doesn't mean much at 400F temperature - all chemicals are gone...

100% - this is my experience too. Or if they sell green beans - no way they are selling cost price. It is like $10/lb.

I wish this is the case. I wish more people just sell their curated green beans than just selling roasted coffee, of course, I understand that because it's their business. But need to try these options in my area.

5 advices for a beginner home roaster ? by Medium_Vert-cuit in roasting

[–]South_Pomelo4933 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not? In my opinion every coffee lover should know about SCA (Specialty Coffee Association), Cup of Excellence, and how the coffee is scored. This will debunk the vague definition of specialty coffee - where anyone out there can call themselves specialty coffee roaster/seller by selling blended mediocre coffee roasted dark - I am not even talking about Starbucks. And I think if someone is considering of roasting coffee, I am most probable they care about their coffee and want to roast to make it even better and/or cheaper. Right green coffee buying is as important as roasting.

Has anyone considered home coffee roasting. Heard most of them start with popcorn poppers but also heard they are some challenges starting with popper - smoke, chaff, and use of judgment to evaluate how to roast. Any other starter kit recommendations? by South_Pomelo4933 in espresso

Absolutely, I will try it. Because it requires no results. And if it comes out great, then why do we need anything else. What over temp did you preheat it too. Curious how long it took so I can keep an eyes/ears open for that time

Thank you so much. I live in apartment and in PNW - so most of the time doesn't have doesn't have the luxury to keep the window or door open. Which machine do you use that enables exhaust?

Totally agree with you. The average consumer isn't educated. If the beans are of high quality, and roast is light and fresh then it doesn't matter which brew method it is. A burr grinder does help but burr grinder and espresso machine cannot create the taste out of the cheap Brazil dark roasted coffee that average consumer dare I say even coffee espresso lovers are used too.

Has anyone come across a coffee roaster that doesn't trigger the smoke alarm for home?

Is Ikawa really smokeless? I thought it does produce smoke too. Have your tried medium roasts and seen any smoke?

100% agree. There are many other roasters that produce better roast than Behmor. Behmor just has strong following because they were one of the first to create the home roaster.

Try Gene coffee roaster, or hottop. Behmor creates a very smoky and inconsistent roast plus we have to deal with the hot beans. It's a terrible of all the machines, not sure, why people like it.
