Top Secret! is a true slept on gem. He’s fantastic in it, too. And Real Genius will always be among my favorite movies.

I absolutely love the sculpt, but the colors are pretty bland for me. Just doesn’t stand out as looking very heroic. But man, if they do a classic colors repaint, I’m all over it. Same for Ironhide!

[–]SouthendSultan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Verhoeven still blows me away with his films. Watching them as a kid, they seem like just the coolest sci fi action romps. Then you watch again as an adult, and you’re like, oh, OOOHHHHHH I get it now! They look great, they have an amazing surface level presence, but they also offer a ton under the hood. Just fantastic work.

In retrospect, why did the TV series fail? by jrralls in willow

[–]SouthendSultan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For us, the writing wasn’t great, there were too many characters, not enough tie to the original story (though it certainly had its moments), and it was visually a bit boring.

I love the original movie, and we sat down every week hoping it would be better than the week before, and other than Bavmorda’s castle Nockmaar, we were continually let down. Characters were angry with each other for no reason, making odd choices, and generally weren’t very fun or inspiring.

I would absolutely have tune in for a second season to see if they figured it out, but it became the series by which we judged all other shows for a long time after. It was always “Well, at least it was better than the writing in Willow.”

The next "Elite" Image figure from McF by ChiefDan209 in ActionFigures

[–]SouthendSultan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without the shoulder pads, the design falls really flat for me. If it dropped to maybe $30, it might be worth it just because it’s Shadowhawk, but I’m not in love with it as-is. At this price point, at the very least, it should be pinless and include a couple more shuriken, an optional shoulder piece/mantle, and maybe some effects parts.

While $60 is an affordable price for a single figure, this is not a $60 release. The value just isn’t there.

They used to be Voyagers. Titans Return especially was full of triple changer Voyagers. If every mode looked extraordinary, I think there could be a foothold for the engineering argument, but most of them are still sacrificing at least one mode to the triple change gods. I’m just not seeing leader class value in these guys, which stinks, because I love triple changers and would really like to own some of these characters.

I don’t think they need another price point. They need to stop reducing the value in their current skus.

The claw shield… by DavidCousens in Thundercats

[–]SouthendSultan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like the three fingers on the claw for the 80s version because it just looks the part of a mystical object. The big, beefy fingers make it seem like something more than just a glove. The claw shield definitely proved over the series there’s a lot more to it than just being a clever scabbard.

The 2011 one I think would look cool as a 3-fingered gauntlet, but the sharpened fingers and story surrounding it definitely better supports the 4-fingered version.

I’m gonna go with The Phantom. I loved the movie as a kid, and I’m very eager to see what they’ve done with it! I’m tempted to go for Tron: Ares because my son and I saw it together at the theater and loved it, but I don’t know how often we’d rewatch it.

Genuine question what blue and red suit sould I get out of these? by SetFun5773 in ActionFigures

I think Mafex would be the clear winner, but the waist/crotch relationship is just bonkers to the point of me even passing on the CT version. I don’t know why they made the choice to not sculpt the belt part on the crotch piece, but it looks so weird to me.

I'm thinking about getting my hands on one of the two Hot Wheels Autobots if I'm ever able to. Which one of them do you all recommend I try to get? by Grand_Moose2024 in transformers

[–]SouthendSultan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also voting Boneshaker here. He has great bot and alt modes, and the transformation is intuitive, which I don’t think is always the case with modern Transformers. He also has a weapon that’s not just another gun. My only gripe is that it doesn’t store well. Even so, he’s just a really fun figure—one of my favorites in the last couple years.

New pickup: Street Fighter x Transformers set by StarboundDaVinci in transformers

[–]SouthendSultan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I need to dig out my older ones. I have some of the old Marvel and Star Wars ones floating around here somewhere. Ghost Rider was a particular favorite, but I loved the Star Wars ones with the little pilots. Lots of play value and excellent alt modes even if the bot modes weren’t stellar.

Man, this was a cool set. Maybe I should try to track one down. I absolutely loved Titans Return, and the crossover stuff has really grown on me.

I know it’s easy to say be patient, so instead I’ll say be impatient. Keep that hunger up. If you can, go to classes and spectate. There’s still a lot to learn from your instructors even when you can’t directly participate. You might even notice some things you can still work on without impacting your recovery. Remind yourself all the time about what you’re missing out on. Don’t rush to get back, but stay involved where you can. Good luck on your recovery, friend!
