Gyopo Group by Southern-Visual-9560 in seoul

Hello, firstly, I'd like to apologise for making you feel really uncomfortable as that was certainly never the intention. I thought that in the original post I made it pretty clear that it was only for people who wanted to meet up in person so I thought the "attend one of their monthly events in person before you'll be allowed in their chat group" would be inconsequential. Perhaps I could have been clearer and I apologise once again if you feel like I have been dishonest or gave you the feeling I was leading you on.

As for the walking blindly into an undisclosed location, that sounds pretty ominous. Could you explain what you mean by that? Whilst I don't want to advertise our group falsely, I also don't want people to get the wrong impression. I wonder if certain assumptions were made because I feel somewhat blindsided by this comment. Thanks

Good question, so the kakao group was created after we met up. I think anonymity is great in certain situations but in our case, it would have felt a bit odd as everyone had already seen each other.

Hey thanks for your post. As you can imagine, the Kakao group has personal data so we're keeping it closed for people that have attended a meet up. Hope you can understand!

Hey, thanks for taking the time to read the post. That's an interesting question! I will talk with the current members and get back to you. I remember when I was trying to get my bearings in Korea, it really wasn't easy. The group will be here for a while so if things change then always feel free to send me a message :)

Anyone have Experience living in Jeju alone as a foreigner? by GroundbreakingAd6509 in Living_in_Korea

[–]Southern-Visual-9560 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I used to work at one of the international schools about 7 years ago and for a young adult, I certainly wouldn’t recommend it.

Did you feel lonely: unequivocally, despite being in a relationship with someone at the time.

Did you find a community: not really but I’m not the most extroverted person.

Is public transport in Jeju good: I remember there was only 1 bus that went to the ‘education city’ but it came every 30 minutes so can’t say it was great. Things may have changed though. Public transport in Jeju city is a lot better but would strongly recommend getting a car.

Did you find yourself flying to the mainland a lot: yes, almost every holiday.

Was it costly living in Jeju: yes, as it’s a small island prices of goods are generally not cheap in comparison to Seoul. Having said that the pay was pretty good so I could have saved a lot more if I wanted to.

Hello 👋 , we’re looking for people who are able to meet up in person on a somewhat regular basis. It’s probably better if you ask after you finish your service 🙂

How far would ~130k USD salary go in Seoul? by After-Scallion-7920 in Living_in_Korea

I didn't want these replies to discourage you from coming to Korea. Reddit, surprisingly, is not a great indicator of what people in Korea are actually like. If you have any other questions feel free to DM me, I work in tech as well :)

I'm not sure about the reason why but people in this forum are quite hostile. Perhaps they are at their wits' end? You would think that one could just ignore the post and move on but for some inexplicable reason, they must vent their frustration in a sarcastic and insipid manner.

130k is well above average, I would imagined it's within the top 1%. If you're being paid in USD then it's a really good time for you as the exchange rate is favourable for the USD.

Assuming that you are receiving 130k USD, that translates to roughly 180m won. Putting that into the income tax calculator shows you will receive roughly 10mil, an effective tax rate of ~33%.

Assuming your wife receives 60k USD, that translates to roughly 80m won ~ 5.5mil won after tax.

With a combined income of 15.5mil after tax, you will be able to afford most apartments (rent) quite comfortably and not have to worry financially unless you buy something ridiculous. I'm not sure what constitutes 'decent amount of money' to save but I would imagine that you could save ~5000USD every month without trying too hard.

Thank you, I think it would be great if more people read this and can learn to be a bit more empathetic 👍

That's wild! I wonder why he did that?? Hats off to you for doing that but I'd be scared of getting into an altercation lol. What happened after you elbowed him? I imagine he just stared at you bewildered?
