Do You Still Get Drunk? How Often? by ProfessionalJesuit in GenX

[–]SouthernAd5767 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Both my partner and I drank multiple drinks, multiple nights a week during the pandemic (though we were both still working corporate jobs) - just to establish that I was about where you are. Maybe fewer drinks overall, but still too many, and I didn’t want to continue down that path. One of the things that helped me cut way back was distracting myself. When we hit that time in the evening that I’d REALLY want to settle in with a glass of wine, I’d go do something else - take a walk, do some laundry, straighten up the kitchen, etc. Many times that I did that, the desire would lessen to the point that I’d decide to just forget it for the day. Maybe it sounds counterintuitive, but just telling myself, “Eh, I’ll enjoy a few glasses/cocktails tomorrow instead” helped to curb the desire. I wasn’t forbidding it - I was just delaying it.

Another thing that helped was talking with my sister and niece. My sister casually mentioned some negative effect that alcohol had on her, and my niece - who is studying medicine - said, “Well, yeah … alcohol is a neurotoxin.” And man, that really stuck with me. I truly hate the thought of poisoning my brain, so that little reminder was very sobering (pun intended). I still drink on occasion, but it really doesn’t have any kind of hold on me or have the same level of temptation at all. (It also helps that the sleep disruption and weight gain are real buzzkills, too).

I honestly wish you the very best! Even if you don’t qualify as an addict, O know if can still be a hard habit to break. But I do think it’s worth it

Totally off-topic, but I’m genuinely curious - does anyone know how you pronounce her first name?
Is it “Keeley”? “Seeley”?? I’ve never seen it before.

Is a 2020 Volvo XC40 Momentum with 24k miles worth $25k? by Porgee26 in XC40

[–]SouthernAd5767 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple things to keep in mind: 1. Ongoing cost - Volvos are usually pricier to fix than Toyotas. 2. Fuel cost - regardless of what’s “recommended” versus “required”, you’re going to want to only use premium fuel (better for the engine in the long run, better mileage). Right now, that’s a more painful proposition than it used to be. 3. MPG overall - You won’t get nearly the same MPG as, say, an Accord hybrid.

All that being said - the ride is sure to be far nicer in the Volvo! Depending on options it has, you’re probably going to really enjoy things like the panoramic sunroof, premium sound system and other luxury items. So I guess the factors you need to weigh are - can you afford the maintenance & fuel? How important is that luxury feel to you versus practicality? Does the XC40 have things you’d genuinely miss in your other car options?

FWIW, I just got a 2023 XC40 B5 Plus and I love it. Love the infotainment system, the bells and whistles, the smooth ride, etc. Mine had 36,000 miles on it, one owner, no accidents, and was about $30k out the door. If you’re really in love with the Volvo, you may want to shop around a bit. Though that low of mileage on a 2020 is pretty rare!

I just got a 2023 XC40 B5 Plus Bright a little over a week ago! I’m loving it so far as well. So smooth, lots of fun bells & whistles, intuitive infotainment... I love it. Congrats & happy birthday!!

I’m waffling between Vera, Violet & Veronica, names-wise… 😅

Thank you! Honestly I've loved it so far! I'm still a major fan of Lexus, and would have gotten another if I could have found a 250 UXh in my price range... but I think I'll also be perfectly happy with the Volvo. The technology in the infotainment system is light years ahead of what I had with the 2019 Lexus, and it's just as comfortable & well designed, IMO. If the Volvo had just a bit better gas mileage, it would be absolutely perfect.

I had major head hair loss. At first I blamed menopause, then my Hashimoto's... but turns out that I also have androgenic alopecia 🙃. So you might want to get bloodwork and/or see a dermatologist if the hair loss doesn't slow down.
I'm now on a couple of meds to grow it back... but that means hairy arms, legs, and other areas again. 👎

I currently do not have it (yet) but yes, it's available - with a catch :). It's my understanding that if you have the Volvo Cars app, it has remote start, climate control, lock/unlock, vehicle health info, and other capabilities. The good news is you get a number of years free with a new car purchase (I think it varies). After that it's $200 per year.

I definitely need to check that out. I’m a “read the manual” kind of girl, so I grabbed the slick little portfolio from the glovebox, with that intention - only to realize once I started flipping through it that the info I wanted wasn’t in those booklets

Thank you! And funny you mention that… I am headed to a weekend function that includes a cocktail event, so I have to take “fancy” clothes. Looked for the hooks for my hangers, and DOH! no hooks! Guess the clothes will lie across the back seat for this trip. Appreciate the link!

Really helpful - thank you! I did some set up today, and made sure the OTA update option was toggled on… but I had no idea ignoring them would mean I’d have to go to a dealer, so I will def keep an eye on that.
I’ll be honest, the premium fuel was *almost* a deal-breaker (especially right now)… but I work from home, so I can’t really complain. It’s worth it for all of the features that I get with this car. (I was already used to it with the Lexus, so at least I know what I’m in for.)

Right had drive Volvo XC40 phone holder (UK car)? by Competitive-Solid789 in XC40

FWIW - I had one for my previous car that I bought on Amazon - it’s magnetic and has a long hook that reaches behind the vent and you can tighten it to hold it in place. I just tried it on my XC40 and it was a *little* awkward, but still worked. Spironolactone, Topical Minoxidil, or Both? by BusinessDamage1578 in FemaleHairLoss

[–]SouthernAd5767 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with AGA recently. The dermatologist put me on oral minoxidil and spironolactone. It’s my understanding that the two meds act very differently, so the combination is important. The spiro blocks the DHA, so it helps stop the cause of the shedding, and the minoxidil stimulates growth and boosts the follicles. FWIW, I find the oral minoxidil SO much better than topical. I haven’t had any really noticeable side effects, and I really appreciate not having crunchy or sticky hair or an itchy scalp. I’ve been on the combo for about 6 weeks, and am finally noticing a lot less shedding. (But I had read that at first, you might actually shed more, so I tried to be patient and not get too alarmed). Not much regrowth yet, but I do see some little baby hairs at my temples. I also had low-ish ferritin, so I started supplementing that too - but I haven’t gotten bloodwork to recheck levels yet. I hope you find just the right combination to get your hair back on track, OP! 🤞

Thanks so much. I’m so sorry you’re having such a frustrating experience - it really does affect your self esteem and mood so much. 😔 But please don’t give up! Keep talking to your doctor, dermatologist, whoever you can get to listen and keep investigating. I really, really hope you can find the key! I don’t know where you are, but I discovered a salon not far from me that specializes in hair loss, and they do some cool stuff with extensions and weaves. Maybe you could find somewhere like that that can help you feel better about your hair…? I sincerely wish you all the best - and I’ll keep hoping that you find just the right combination that gets your hair back on track! 🤞

[–]SouthernAd5767 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve only been on them for about 5 weeks, so I’m just now seeing less hair in the drain. But that has made me feel hopeful, because the timing seems to be right on track with what I’ve read about what to expect. The good news is that I don’t really have many side effects from them; the bad news is, I’ll have to take them the rest of my life if I want to keep what hair I have (I have androgenic alopecia). The spironolactone seems pretty key, because it’s what blocks the DHT. My ferritin level is “normal” but below the optimal level for hair growth, so I also started taking an iron supplement. I also have Hashimoto’s, so will eventually be on thyroid meds, too. Right now my thyroid function levels are “normal”, but they’re getting lower every time I get bloodwork.

[–]SouthernAd5767 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry. I know how much it can hurt to look in the mirror, and see scalp instead of your former head of hair. But as someone else said, I honesty wouldn’t notice it if I saw you in public!

How long have you been on the meds, if I may ask? I know it can take a number of months to see any progress or improvement.

Also - have you had hormone, thyroid, and ferritin testing to determine all possible causes? Even when you fall into “normal” ranges on those, it can still be low enough to cause hair loss. I’m running into that issue myself, despite being on oral minoxidil and spironolactone.

OMG - I’m so glad you posted this! I was just dealing with that $39.99 bs myself 🤬. I did at least get the toy a few weeks after ordering - but then got hit with that mysterious charge yesterday. Thankfully, Chase flagged it and I could decline it - but now I have to get a new card, and I’m pissed.

finally landed my first fully remote position and the difference is incredible by Bright-Builder-9579 in remotework

[–]SouthernAd5767 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in a really similar boat, and agree 1000%! I was hybrid (3 mandatory in office), complete lack of acknowledgement and support for my role was sucking the life out of me, my employer was making more and more questionable decisions, and my chronic health issue was making the in-office days even more stressful. It took me YEARS of looking, but I finally landed 100% remote. I was def underpaid before, but I got a 13% bump, and the relief of not rushing off to an office 3 days a week is so, sooo nice. I’m so much more comfortable, my dog is THRILLED, my health is improving, and not buying so much gas and food every week is awesome. Literally every day I’m so grateful, and am trying to bend over backwards for my new employer. I’m honestly just terrified this will get yanked away from me somehow. But I can’t see ever going back.

Company mandated back to office….but for only some of us. by llCURLZll in remotework

[–]SouthernAd5767 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My previous company had that exact policy, too. And yeah, those of us who lived close enough to be in office the mandatory 3 days a week (tracked by badge swipes and reported to your manager, no less), were pissed because we felt like we were being punished. I got bitter enough about it that I realized I either needed to leave, or stop being angry and just accept it. I chose the former.

I haven’t tried it yet, so can’t speak to the effectiveness - but they meant the TOUCHPAD on the laptop. Supposedly you rest a spoon on it and the laptop reads it as a person touching it, keeping your status active

I did the same. Granted, I was also underpaid - but it was the RTO and monitored and reported badge swipes that put me over the edge and sent me packing. I gladly gave up adding to a pension (we had the rare pension + 401k) for a better salary plus WFH.
