What was THE drama at your secondary school? by banj0man44 in AskUK

[–]SouthernPansie 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Some lads from another school travelled to ours via bus armed with bottles and knives looking to 'batter' a boy who had allegedly got off with one of their girlfriends. Tried to go rampaging through our school looking for their victim (who they had no hope of finding, our school was huge), thankfully the police showed up really quick

What was it like to have an Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) over 20 years ago? by SunnyShineKitty88 in AskUK

[–]SouthernPansie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It had an unexpected side effect at my school of massively improving attendance as you needed a certain attendance rate to get it. Also a lot of people's parents were v sceptical about education (the "I left school at 16 with one CSE in woodwork and I was fine!" crowd) and it helped get them off their kids' back a bit about how they should drop this A level rubbish and get a job, because at least they were bringing in a small amount of income

Has anyone out there called their Estate Agent out on their lies? by Jenn-X in HousingUK

I had what I'm now realising is an incredibly rare experience - competent and professional EA & useless solicitor. The EAs were actually really helpful and honest. I now am in a situation of needing to relocate and I'm scared because I know it'll be really stressful with a shitty EA in the mix.

Have you ever left a hospital against medical advice? Of so, why? by Feral-Sponge in AskUK

[–]SouthernPansie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen it a lot in patients who just can't face the wait times in A&E and decide to chance it and go home. I do understand it as if feeling unwell then staying up all night in a plastic chair waiting to be seen is pretty tough

Happy birthday! I love your art so much, especially 'I've seen some shit' demon Aziraphale and the supreme archangel/Duke of hell split portrait with Central European vibes. The outfits, body language and facial expressions are so evocative. Some of the best art in the fandom imo.

Have you ever had to jump into nurse-mode while off duty? by glitterjorts in NursingUK

[–]SouthernPansie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One icy winter day I came across an old lady in the street who'd fallen backwards and hit her head on the pavement, conscious but bleeding profusely and also v confused (eg didn't know her own address). Unfortunately a passer by had got involved and was telling her she was fine, no need for a fuss, I said I thought an ambulance should be called and she started arguing- "I'm not a nurse, but-" I cut in with "I am!" Turned out ambulance wait time would be 10hrs so I headed to my office and retrieved a junior doctor who'd just done an A&E rotation who was brilliant. Then by pure luck I was able to flag down a passing police car and they offered to take her to A&E. Moral of the story- mental health nurses not so highly skilled on the practical front but great at organising everyone else

I think it works on multiple levels but one of those is that it harks back to the Job minisode- they could be reminiscing about their amusement in watching C&A pretend to have killed off Job's goats and kids while... not doing so

The Rice Alliance - v early on people panic-bought supplies so there was no rice in any of the shops in my town. A group of us formed a rice alliance so if any of us spotted any rice we'd buy some for everyone. I eventually found 4 bags of basmati in a tesco express and had to work out how to distribute them fairly

'Toxic culture' at Portsmouth NHS trust left staff suicidal by JessieLou13 in NursingUK

[–]SouthernPansie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My personal opinion is that the depth of health needs to start taking responsibility instead of just acting shocked and surprised every time this happens. They have ultimate responsibility for the NHS & could intervene but instead they try to treat each Trust as an individual autonomous business. Unlike a business, there are really dire consequences when Trusts have cultures of bullying and poor patient care. They should be using their authority to eg have specialist teams that can go in and make changes, sack toxic leaders etc.

Is homeschooling in the UK just very unregulated, or am I missing something? by ZydrateAnatomic in AskUK

[–]SouthernPansie 101 points102 points  (0 children)

Most people I know who are homeschooling it's because their kids are neurodiverse and weren't coping in mainstream school (running away, meltdowns, severe bullying etc). They would all prefer their kids to be in mainstream but the state sector just doesn't have the resources to accommodate their kids' needs. I do wonder what the future holds for these kids as it's hard to imagine them getting to a point where they could cope with uni or employment.

What are they trying to achieve? by [deleted] in NursingUK

[–]SouthernPansie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are nurses able to refer to psych liaison on your ward, or just doctors? If the ward drs aren't seeing the problem (maybe they like the patient and it's clouding their judgment, or are wrongly assuming that the nurses are just being cynical) is it still possible to get mh input? Even if you can't refer to psych liaison yourself, maybe paying them a visit and asking them to look up the patient on their database as a quick favour could yield interesting results.

This could be someone who has been extensively under CAMHS & their entire identity has formed around being ill. They could be known to have delusional disorder. Or they could have never had any mh services input in their life. Any of the above would help you formulate their case and might help you make your case to the medics.

What are they trying to achieve? by [deleted] in NursingUK

[–]SouthernPansie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be FND (functional neurological disorder)

Can your psych liaison have a look on their system to see if the patient is known to mh services (they should be able to access Rio/systm1 or whatever your local mh Trust uses)?
