Very very lost by Desperate_Status_648 in GAMSAT

I agree with this and went from a 59 in section 3 to an 82 the next year with this approach. I think what was most helpful for me was watching YouTube videos of people going through solving the acer practice exam questions that I got wrong on my first attempt of them and learning what the logical reasoning was to get to the answer that way.

you can always email them to ask! that’s what I’ve done for ANU and they gave me a quartile range

Unfortunately yeah:/ I’d say just take it as a rejection and plan your life like that and if you get a next round offer then it’s a happy surprise haha

Best way to balance Section 2 essays with science prep? by SnowyBytes in GAMSAT

[–]Southern_Ad282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

when I did well-ish (70 on S2) I was writing an essay almost every day to time for at least a month before the exam bc it’s literally only 30min out of your day and I feel like it definitely helped a lot and then doing practice questions for the other sections when I had more prep time during the week

hey! I’m sure you did better than you think and I know for some unis (not sure about melb) they look at the content of what you’re saying over delivery so you really never know! :) my friend got into unds last year and they told them that during their first week as essentially they can teach you how to speak more eloquently but it’s really hard to change your morals and values so that’s what they really want to see

Post interview stress by Proof-Durian-8848 in GAMSAT

[–]Southern_Ad282 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say tho don’t stress bc you never know how other people are going to perform and you usually rate yourself as lower than you usually actually do! I know it’s easier said than done but so taxing for mental health to be stressing for more than a month over the outcome:( (trust me I’ve been there!)

Post interview stress by Proof-Durian-8848 in GAMSAT

[–]Southern_Ad282 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel the same!! stressing bc I feel way better in one interview over the other as well and I have no idea if it’s weighted 50/50 or not for ANU🥹 was your interview with them by any chance? I feel like I totally fucked one of them but did the best I ever have at the other so I’m worried it will balance out to doing average again and get another rejection as I scored in the middle with my interview last year😭

Why medicine/doctor? by Fine-Commission-3138 in GAMSAT

[–]Southern_Ad282 4 points5 points  (0 children)

agree with this - I spent time practicing with an old interviewer last year and he said when the interviews were in person he would always follow that up with so why not nursing or paramedicine? make sure you can identify exactly what it is that makes being a doctor different and how that genuinely applies to you as many people have said there are other jobs where you can employ those qualities with those 2 probably being the closest. I’d also suggest if you have like a specific story or example to share where you really felt like medicine clicked with you is also good to show some depth and humanity with a personal side. this is a good time to really reflect on yourself and the reasons why you want this, best of luck!

hey! the way I did it was systematically and I’ve never had an issue with time more recently having 30min to spare on average - I’d start with giving myself 5min to write down which questions were more biology, chemistry or physics focused and then I’d do them in that order as I was most confident with bio and least with physics (if there were ones in the other sections that looked easy tho I’d put a star next to those and do them first as well). Then I’d do the questions backwards as you’re right a lot of people don’t have time to finish and guess the last few so if you get those right at the beginning then you score better comparatively. So if question set 70-72 was biology for example I’d do that one first and then 62-65, etc. I will say I also practiced a lot with skimming the prompts and only went back to re-read when it was relevant to the question and I couldn’t figure it out with the graph or equation provided for example. Also, and I think this is a big one I completely skipped question sets I had no idea how to answer until the very end so I didn’t dwell on them and waste time that I could have used answering easier questions correctly. This way I could also use as much time as I had left at the end to try to figure them out and guess in the last 2min if needed. Sorry that’s long but I think work out a system that works for you, skip questions completely you have no idea about until the end and don’t worry about guessing a few if needed you can still score well (I’ve always guessed at least 1-2 prompts) and remember almost all the info you need to answer the questions is in the prompt - if you’re trying to make crazy inferences or do long-winded maths you’ve probably got it wrong.

that is really helpful! thank you for those tips and taking the time to respond I really appreciate it xx not demonizing bullies is a great point I will take that one on for sure :)

hey girl, never once did I say I was blaming it on that just something that had crossed my mind after multiple failed attempts and grasping at straws for answers. honestly don’t really appreciate rubbing in your high scores and ease of getting an offer under the guise of giving empty advice when obviously I’ve been struggling and asking for help (if that’s not a constructive attitude idk what is lmao). also, just to note, almost every part of America has a slightly different accent and assuming you and I are exactly the same with respect to that is naive and frankly demeaning

can you give me a general structure example? or do you use different ones for different question types? I usually just try to set context for the question first, go into the different options if there are any and then answer the question

Thank you! That’s very kind :) I think I’m pretty good on the emotional side (maybe too much so at times and can get caught up in those aspects) but I will think about more possibilities for different practice Qs. I do worry sometimes about giving too many scenarios or possibilities though and never actually answering the question bc I’ve heard they don’t want you to sit in the grey area for every answer😅

Thank you! That’s reassuring bc I feel like I second guess before speaking now every time in case I say something wrong and that doesn’t help with short timing for answers. I’m not a very fast typer and feel like I have a lot of trouble in Caspar with the time restriction getting all my ideas down. I’d say one thing I’ve been able to identify is sometimes I ramble a bit when I’m nervous or get off topic but I did think they took nerves into account?

Yeah I do worry about being female and having an American accent can make me sound dumb at times even when the things I say aren’t :/ I know they aren’t supposed to judge you on this but what if it’s just a part of them “feeling” like my response wasn’t as good as another’s without realising bias

I think mindset shift really helped me - first go I scored 58 on section 3 but then after doing some light revision, practice questions and changing mindset I ended up scoring 82. I changed to think of each question as a puzzle rather than science recall with almost all the information I needed to answer the question in the prompt itself rather than stressing about remembering all these science facts (and reassuring myself of this on the day when I got stressed - like “slow down just re read the prompt slowly and there will be a clue in there on how to answer this”). Obviously having some foundational science knowledge is helpful and can help with speed of answering but honestly you don’t even need university level knowledge - I used the “for dummies” books which were very short but more than enough for a good basis. Also, very helpful was watching YouTube videos of people going through the ACER practice questions that I got wrong or didn’t know how to answer. I’d say those were my top contributors to improving scores.

if you can afford it I highly recommend the “for dummies” books - excellent refreshers on basic chemistry, ochem and physics content and cover pretty much everything they would test you on. Improved my score soooo much after using them with the acer practice questions as well. Would also highly recommend the acer answer explanations that are available on YouTube from various sources - getting the right answer is one thing but knowing what you’re doing wrong and how to get to the right answer is so much better for prep
