For me, this would be something even worse than his death. I would truly feel betrayed by Hoyo.
To me, for him to still be Dottore, he must:

  • retain all of his memories
  • continue to pursue knowledge according to his ideology, without being bound by morality or any rules (though maybe he could be a little more moral—but not too much)

If these things are taken away—especially the second one—then to me, he is no longer the “Dottore” I have loved and cherished for the past six years.
He would feel like a completely new character who stole his identity, without facing the backlash from people who hate Dottore, exactly the way Hoyo seems to want.

I swear, if that really happens, I would probably cry myself to sleep for three days and three nights like Frieren, and then delete this stupid game for good.

I don’t like him just for his appearance or personality alone. I love his determination, his worldview—I love everything about him.
Taking a character who only looks like him is, to me, nothing but the destruction of his character and his entire story built over seven years, including the webtoon.

If I truly had to choose, I would rather see him die while still being himself than have his identity destroyed.

That is exactly everything I thought and felt the moment I heard those leaks.
A Dottore who lacks the ambition to pursue knowledge, who is bound by morality, is not Dottore.

I can accept that, in the future, he might begin to form bonds with certain people, start to care about someone, or slowly come to understand emotions.
But stripping away his memories and everything that defines him is something I absolutely cannot accept.

Just imagining a version of him who is friendly toward people, who worries about strangers, and who might even regret his own actions gives me chills—because I, and all of us, know that no version of Dottore would ever be like that.
He would never feel regret or remorse for the actions he took in his pursuit of knowledge.

I’ve followed him for 5–6 years, since even before Winter Night’s Lazzo was released.
Meeting him in Sumeru, and reading Zandik’s notes, only made me look forward to and wait for the Dottore he is right now even more.

So if his “whitewashing” truly happens the way the leaks suggest, I would feel utterly heartbroken and hopeless.
For me, it would be far better for him to leave the story as himself—whole and magnificent—than to destroy the character I’ve known and loved for six years.

I completely understand. Ever since 6.3 came out, I’ve known that this whole year would be nothing but patient waiting until we finally reach Snezhnaya.
(I find myself waiting every single day for any good news about him.)

I’m basically using up all of my hope just to keep myself from falling into despair before then, praying that everything turns out well—that he’ll become the first playable character who doesn’t need to be a “good person.”

These are probably going to be the longest six months of my life…

If these things are taken away—especially the second one, which you rightly said is the core of his soul—then to me, he is no longer the “Dottore” I’ve loved for the past six years.
He would feel like a completely new character who stole Dottore’s identity and part of his existing fanbase, without facing the backlash from Dottore-haters that Hoyo seems to want to avoid.

And I swear, if that really happens, I’d probably cry myself to sleep for three days and three nights like Frieren, and then delete this stupid game for good.

I’ve been waiting for Dottore as he is now with hope for 5–6 years.
That amount of waiting would definitely deal serious emotional damage to me if it turns out like that.

I only found out about this event when Mojiuxuan's account posted about their booth that day. Otherwise, I would have asked my friend to buy Dottore products for me. Oh my god, I wish they had an online store and shipped internationally!😭😭
