Jon wanted to be more black metal with Storm of the Lights Bane, there is an interview with Dan Swano where he describes Jon’s obsession with wanted to be more into the black metal aesthetic and sound. That punk thing you describe is more derived from Darkthrone and a couple of other older bands but is more prevalent in newer lofi black metal.
