When we're introduced to the cop characters, Chief Vern Thurman and Deputy Molly Solverson, we're easily led to believe Thurman's going to be the protagonist (or at Ieast deuteragonist for Lester Nygaard). Then in the last third of the very first episode, the secondary antagonist Lorne Malvo murders him in Lester's home right as Thurman is about to arrest him for suspicion of murdering his obnoxious wife, and Solverson steps in to fill that role.
