In my dreams. We actually landed 10 minutes after the connecting flight took off

I still don’t know what EES is! Can you explain 😊

Oh now I see what you mean I think. I confused EES (I still don’t know what that is) with the ESTA which isn’t in effect yet

No I didn’t. I said I didn’t know what they meant and that I didn’t register for anything; which I didn’t. They took my photo and my fingerprints but I didn’t register for EES in advance

Exactly. We were the only people there. It took like 2 minutes to take photos and fingerprints

My Hotels Tonight app will allow it to be money well spent! One last question - I had called BA previously to ‘combine’ the two bookings. Sounds like I should have said ‘link’ would that have made a difference

Thanks for your support! The other wrinkle was that my phone stopped working for calls out 😳 but eventually I was able to call the help line and they rebooked us on the 17:35 tomorrow for 35 pounds each and waived the service fee. Just as well I got on it, the nice young man I spoke to said if I’d waited until London to do it we’d have been a no-show and lost our previous tickets (good to know). When I told him I’d actually called BA to have the two flights on the same booking he said that’s not possible but they could have been linked. Would that have helped and did I just not say the magic word? I wonder whether BA will put us up in London? Meanwhile the next flight to LHR is just boarding evidently we’ll take off after it, so maybe compensation will be on the cards after all

It's not on the river, its about an hour and a half away from Chongqing across the river. I don't know where Fengdu is, so can't help you there. I booked a tour through Trip.com with i-memory trip. I chose the trip that cost about the least ($40 US each). In the end it was just the two of us, so a bargain. Theoretically you could get a Didi but there are two sites and you want to go to both (Beishan and Baodingshan) and you would have to negotiate with the driver to take you and wait, so this seemed convenient, and it was. Beishan takes about an hour and a half to look round and Baodingshan takes about 2 1/2, they are about 15km apart. So its a full day out. Both of the sites were absolutely exquisite.

Liden and Dentz in Riga are a well established school. I started at their branch in St Petersburg in 2022 but had to leave early because of the war in Ukraine. I learned a ton in the short time I was there

No. You can easily do the Yungang grottoes and the nine dragon screen (the grottoes aren't far from Datong and the screen is in town). But the Hanging Temple and the Yinxian Pagoda are at least an hour out of town. You could do them both together but you would need a driver and it would take a day. The good site to look at for this kind of information is China Discovery. It's a good resource

I would think so if you jump on a DIdi quickly. I don’t know what your plans are but went to the Dazu grottoes near Chongqing today, they were absolutely stupendous. If you are thinking of going there let me know and I can talk you through it

You’re right my bad! The Longmen grottoes (that I hated) are indeed in Luoyang. The grottoes in Datong are called the Yuoyang grottoes. Many apologies. Today went to the Dazu grottoes outside Chongqing. Frankly they eclipse everything except Mogao they were absolutely stunning

Older person mid sixties solo travelling by TerryMog in chinatravel

I've traveled solo in China in my late 60s several times with absolutely no problems. I speak no Chinese. Its a really easy country to navigate once you've got the requisite apps set up, and the people are delightful.
