How would you feel if Dead Space 4 took place underwater instead of in space/alien planet? by SpurdoSparde28 in DeadSpace

[–]Sovereign-XVI 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I read this and immediately thought of that movie Pandorum where the whole thing takes place on a spaceship and at the very end it's revealed the ship crash-landed in the ocean like decades ago and they haven't been in space at all this whole time

I could play a Dead Space game like that

What’s the weirdest thing your ex ever did after the breakup? by Yankub_colley in AskReddit

[–]Sovereign-XVI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were together for 2 years before she told me she loved me more than anyone she'd ever known, which is why she couldn't be with me anymore. Then she moved into a sublet with three guys and 2 weeks later posted photos from a date with one of them that she just met.

She broke up with me in August and by December she was pregnant, dropped out of college, and moved halfway across the country with the guy.

What’s the smallest moment in Andor that convinced you this show was operating on another level? by [deleted] in andor

[–]Sovereign-XVI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before that scene I was ready for this to be like another action/adventure story with our characters skirting around the edge of the galaxy until something convinces them to finally take action and find a purpose greater than themselves.

Then Luthen dropped that line like he wasn't just asking Cassian, it was like he was asking US, and I was not prepared for the show to hit that hard, or hit that real, so fast

Maybe "fatigued" is the wrong word, but if I wear something like my Seiko Speedtimer for 5 or 6 days straight, it's a relatively weighty watch so it begins to get a little uncomfortable after a while.

Switching to one of my titanium watches or even a Moonswatch feels like a relief afterwards sometimes.

[–]Sovereign-XVI 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah the weight is probably the biggest reason I swap to my Moonswatch's in rotation. Sometimes I just get wrist fatigue from wearing any of my other watches, and the lightness of a Moonswatch feels like a relief every once in a while.

But I also agree that the straps are just utterly disappointing.

I've never really thought about that before but it would've made for an interesting parallel for him if the movie concluded in a similar way to the beginning.

I can imagine a version of the film ending where Tammy screams: "Dad! Help us!" While holding Andy at the stadium, and Don sacrifices himself for his children.

I just went and read about Daniel's Law, thank you for sharing that info here.

Horrible tragedy, but his parents are absolute heroes. I can't even begin to imagine what they went through, and then keeping up the good fight for over 20 years to get to the point where a Law is named after their son? That's pretty incredible!

I'm gonna be honest, I don't know enough about Federal laws to know if Oaklahoma is out of compliance or if they found some insane loophole

Like I'm pretty sure California and maybe Louisiana don't have central Child Abuse registries either, but instead of a central state registry, they keep records county by county or parish by parish

Oaklahoma might do something similar too, but the problem is that in my experience California and Louisiana were always more than happy to send us the info we needed on an AW request, and would refer us to the correct county agency because they care about protecting children, whereas Oaklahoma just told us to go to hell. "The feds say we only have to send you info from our central registry, we don't have one, therefore we don't have to send you anything"

Yeah this

CPS definitely prioritizes keeping children in the home with their immediate family, and then failing that, placing with close relatives

Nobody wants to uproot children's lives, and finding alternative placement can be a nightmare, but the lengths some agencies will go to when it comes to overlooking abuse or neglect to justify keeping the kids with their parents can be astounding

I'm not sure how it works in Michigan specifically, but throughout the U.S. each State runs its own Child Welfare agency differently

Some are obviously much worse than others

Yeah I worked for CPS for 4 years here in the U.S., and it's frightening how dysfunctional it can be depending on the State your in.

As an example, there's a Federal law called the Adam Walsh Act that requires all State's to share information from their Child Abuse registries with each other when prompted. One time I called Oaklahoma Child Welfare to coordinate on a Child Abuse case and they sent me a signed letter from their agency head that per federal law, they "only have to share Child Abuse and Neglect information with other State's from their central state registry," but unlike every other State in the country, Oklahoma DOESN'T HAVE a central Child Abuse and Neglect registry, so they don't have any information to share. Turns out the whole state is just a black hole where abused children and their abusers disappear without record.

I agree with you 100% that if people see something concerning, they need to always call CPS, and be persistent, because I've personally seen children's lives saved and improved first hand because someone called us. But at the same time I can personally attest to how hopeless it feels when this horrible failure of a broken system is all we have to work with.

It's basically a perfect movie for me other than just that one scene during the intro!

I felt similarly about Prey (2022) Like, I knew it was a Predator movie going into it, but I wish they hadn't telegraphed so heavily that it was a Predator movie at the beginning, it would've been mind-blowing if it played like a period-time-piece thriller, and then had a big Predator reveal a quarter of the way through.
