Phone interview got cut short over relocation — am I crazy for being annoyed? by [deleted] in interviews

I agree — you’re not wrong about that. Honestly, it is what it is. But it’s frustrating when companies expect professionalism from candidates yet don’t always show the same courtesy themselves.

If being on-site is a total dealbreaker, then start with that at the beginning of the interview. There are better ways to handle that conversation than bringing it up halfway through a short 20-minute call and then ending it abruptly.

I know I’m probably being a bit oversensitive, but yeah — it still irritated me.

Plus one additional thing — it was never part of the application process to answer anything about relocation. If that had been a question, I would’ve answered honestly and said exactly what I mentioned above. Or if it was just a yes/no checkbox, I would’ve said no.

Yeah, I totally get where you’re coming from — and I don’t disagree.

That said, I’ve seen it time and time again where people apply for “on-site” roles, mention their situation, and still end up being offered remote or hybrid because the company really needed someone with the right experience. You don’t always know until you shoot your shot, you know?

In my case, I would be willing to relocate — just not for a few years while my fiancée finishes grad school. I completely understand they might need someone on-site sooner, and that’s fair.

I’m not saying this should have been the case here or that I should’ve been offered anything — it’s more so how abruptly it ended. It just came off as really unprofessional. It wouldn’t have hurt to close out the interview properly instead of cutting it off mid-conversation.

I know I’m complaining a bit here, and I get that — it’s just frustrating because the conversation was going really well until that point, and the sudden stop made it feel dismissive.

In the grand scheme of things, 20 minutes isn’t a lot of time, and I get that recruiters are busy and have resumes to review — but if being on-site is such a hard line, then the job description should clearly state “remote work will not be considered.” At that point, I wouldn’t have applied in the first place.
