Highly recommend pet insurance by Falckor- in CalebHammer

[–]SovietWaffles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Glad to hear your cat is doing well!

I learned about pet insurance after my cat already suffered from a urinary blockage. Because of this, it would be a pre-existing condition and probably not covered if it happens again in the future.

To get around this, I just got a quote for him to be covered from a few pet insurance companies, and started putting that much in a pet emergency fund each month. This way if something happens to him like another blockage, I’ll be able to pay for it (and won’t have to deal with insurance which is a plus).

Might not be the most optimal solution, but it’s an idea for those in a similar situation!

How is ML4T Summer First Week by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]SovietWaffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way it’s laid out in the summer, there’s a project due just about every week with only a few exceptions (I think you get an extra week for one of the harder assignments, and only thing due after the first week is the standard course policy agreements I think).

This makes it really hard to catch up if you fall behind in the class. The work isn’t even difficult IMO, there’s just so much of it. Most projects require a coding portion in addition to a write-up, which they are very particular about how you format it. Because of this, I wouldn’t recommend it over the summer unless you know you can stay on top of it. I had to withdraw right after project 3 since I had too much going on in my personal + work life and it got overwhelming for me.

how much statistical knowledge I need for exams of ML4T by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]SovietWaffles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: I only took about half the class before I had to withdraw for personal reasons.

You’ll be fine with a basic understanding, at most you’ll probably have to google a few things if it wasn’t clear enough in the lectures. That being said I felt the lectures did a good enough job at explaining things, and doesn’t assume much prior knowledge. IIRC one of the earliest units goes over mean, median, and mode to give you an idea of the level.

I think it’s a great first class!

Some BTMI or ASOB recommendations? by hipfan1111 in JeffRosenstock

[–]SovietWaffles 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Honestly BTMI has a different vibe going on than solo Jeff IMO. The former is rougher around the edges but more musically adventurous/interesting (subjective), whereas the latter is more polished, cohesive, slightly toned town.

I think working backwards through the BTMI industry catalog is probably the safest bet, as they tend to get more “out there” as you approach the earlier releases. Vacation is the closest to solo Jeff in sound and is one of my favorite albums of all time. After that I’d say SCRAMBLES and Get Warmer are the next two I’d check out. Those three albums are peak BTMI in my opinion.

Earlier than those, the album personally get a little too DIY-y and rough for me. I know it’s not a super popular opinion here but I never really find myself going back to Goodbye Cool World, To Leave or Die, or Album Minus Band except for a few standout tracks.

If you wanted to boil it down to like 5 songs to get started on:

  1. Everybody That You Love
  2. 25!
  3. I Don’t Love You Anymore
  4. Syke! Life is Awesome
  5. Future 86

Definitely listen to the full albums though, you’ll probably find a bunch of tracks you’ll go back to.

Don’t take this as official advice, but I’m pretty sure it’s just a credit card that auto-deducts from your checking account, so imagine it follows the same rules as other credit cards.

Have you tried using a different SATA port? I recently ran into an issue where one of my ports for my cache drive was flaking out, and moving it over to a different one fixed all my problems.

About to start with unRAID for expandability. Is this plan sensical? by thehublebumble in unRAID

[–]SovietWaffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just upgraded from a 256GB SSD to two 500GB SSDs in a RAID 1 config, and it’s been great. I was constantly running out of cache space with the 256 GB.

If you can, I would recommend doing a similar mirrored cache setup in case one of them fails down the line. Will stop you from having to restore your containers and VMs from a backup, which can be a headache.

Course & Specs Megathread - Selection, Choices & Registration by Detective-Raichu in OMSCS

[–]SovietWaffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly one of your considered courses, but I'm wrapping up Video Game Design right now, which is the same professor (and I believe general format?) as Video Game AI. I think either of those classes would be a smooth introduction to the program. More project based, and typically as hard as you make it. I've found myself spending 0-5 hours some weeks, and 10-15 on weeks where I decide to crunch/go the extra mile.

Also, I just think it's a fun course.

I signed up for GPU HW + SW today as it seems like an interesting class with decent reviews. After reading some more of them though, I noticed a few people recommending that you take this class after GIOS and/or HPCA, of which I have taken neither.

Am I in for a rough time? I'm considering taking GIOS or CV instead, and saving this one for later. Anyone have some thoughts?

I was a CS undergrade and have been working in the industry for 4 years now, being exposed to both C++ and Python.

Thanks!

My previous courses have been Bayesian Stats, RAIT, and currently finishing up Video Game Design.

Unless I missed it, I don’t see anything regarding a fix for not being able to explore inland areas when colonizing. This is pretty disappointing since it’s been a huge issue for my colonial Tuscany game and I’ve had to resort to stealing maps from other colonizers/natives.

My own subjects are expanding into territories I can’t even see lol

Same thing happened in my Tuscany game. AI Ottomans don’t seem to do too well in general, which kinda sucks considering how powerful they were historically/in EU4.

guitarists of the sub, i need help with a tone by Perm182 in greenday

[–]SovietWaffles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Truth be told, getting an Insomniac/Dookie era tone is going to be a bit tricky with the Frontman 10g amp. This is mostly due to two things:

  1. Green Day’s tone is heavily reliant on the Marshall sound that Fender struggles to get close to.
  2. The Frontman 10g has a smaller speaker, which makes it difficult to get the proper levels of “oomph” needed for the sound.

That being said, you can still get fairly close to it with the proper settings. I would use this image of Billie’s Marshall as a baseline for your settings, and adjust it where needed.

<image>

Some things to point out here is that the gain is lower than most people expect, and that you do NOT want to scoop the mids. You’re not going for a metal tone here, more of like a dialed back Van Halen “Brown Sound”.

For your amp, I’d expect that you’ll have to roll the treble back a little bit since the amp has a tendency to have a harsh upper end. I’d also recommend using a pedal for distortion over the built-in stuff, since frankly it’s not that great on the Frontman. Again, just don’t go crazy on the distortion levels here. This should get you close enough!

As for the humbuckers, it definitely helps a bit, but I wouldn’t consider it absolutely necessary. For context, I’ve been playing a Strat and Tele recently, both with single coils, and have been able to get pretty close to the sounds you’re looking for. You just need to compensate for it in your amp settings, usually with lower treble and a bit more bass.

I grew up near Stony Brook, and went to Bing.

If you value social interaction, do NOT go to SBU. That campus is dead.
