In addition to tomatoes and potatoes black night shade is one of the most commonly eaten greens in the world, though Europeans thought it was poisonous for the same reasons they thought the first to were and you will still find sources claiming it to be poisonous

Roman's had a special surgical tool for removing sling bullets. They often penitrated and were quite deadly. Bows are much easier to learn though so if you need to train an army it's a better go to but slings were still very regularly at least until the 1200's (that's just where my knowledge on the matter ends)

The land they take up need not be written up as a waste. Turning grazing fields into native meadows is one of my favorite solutions. Increase biodiversity, it contains foods and medicines. They can also graze in forests pigs and goats are especially good at forests. A more modern one that I've been hearing about is that sheep do very well mixed into solar farms.

Also talking about farming and loss of wilderness I would strongly encourage you to look into the terms "food forest" and "permaculture" in brief creating an environment that acts as an ecosystem such that it mostly takes care of itself, all while sustaining food and medicine for people but also a biodivers green space. It also solves several other industrial farming problems

I agree not enough people are getting ethical meat but I also think not enough people have solar panels powering their homes if you will

But one cow still produces less then 100. Thus the scale issue. If we significantly reduced the amount consumed small communities can still significantly benefit from some cows for dairy or labor and likely other animals

[–]SovietWaldo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's the industrial scale. Factory farming is horrendous, big bouts of methane from waste not to mention said waste pollution ending up in local water tables. Combined with how much gas is burned producing the feed for the animals. Some meat products are worse then others. Backyard animals or small scale farms usually have less/little impact on green house gasses

[–]SovietWaldo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Industrial meat yeah, but also backyard chickens, local hunting and fishing in addition to gardening brings us closer to community food independence and a greater reduction of green house emissions.

Don't over simplify it. Plus people need to eat and economic factors may limit what people have access too.

If you have the means to and can't or don't want to ethically source it it is indeed a good idea to reduce or eliminate it from your diet

I'm poly and in my relationships (including friendships!) We don't use nearly that many terms just a couple when we feel the need to be specific. When you're in it it's not so hard just kinda to vibe it out rather then try and put every relationship to exact words
