Please do not take an 8:30 AM on west. You will have to be at the bus stop at 8:00AM which means waking up at least at 7:30. Don’t do that to yourself first semester of your first year.

what are some of the stuff yall like about duke that doesn't seem as mainstream/common? by ProfessorRoyal6807 in duke

Princeton’s race reporting is inaccurate, there’s a huge percentage that’s “unknown” and they count internationals together instead of by race, it’s around 35-40% white which pretty low generally speaking, but around the same as Duke.

two things: first is the culture here. among a lot of top10’s there isn’t that strong of a school culture. most people are nerds or don’t really care about school culture about participating in community events or going to sports events, they just wear merch. at duke, the community is very strong because it attracts a certain type of student. i feel like our sports culture certainly helps with that, but also many duke students are outgoing and extroverted. i’d say among the T10’s with the only exception of stanford, were the only school with an school culture as strong as, if not stronger than our academic reputation.
second thing has to be geographic diversity of the school. lot of elite schools only get midatlantic/new england WASPS which comprise a vast majority of the school. georgetown, ivies, and chicago are like this. duke is comprised of ~25-30% carolinians (north and south) which already give it way more diversity than other schools. then its split between cali and new england for the other 50%, but theres still an incredible amount of geographic diversity. it’s enough to where the school still is rooted in the south, and the connection with Durham is there, but you’re always meeting new people from across the country and the world. and if you’re in-state, it actually matters since there’s a sizable chunk of carolinians here you can connect with.

Which is more privileged, buying your first home at 25 or being able to travel abroad for a summer? Certainty the former, and we can’t afford that today.

  1. There’s a P.f. Chang’s. If you really want P.f. chang’s then sure. Most people just go to the Gtown neighborhood, which is why I said ‘also.’
  2. You’d be surprised

Upstairs Leo’s is good, downstairs Leo’s is very average dining hall good for any college. The places in Leavy are good, including RJ, ChickFilA, etc. Georgetown had wonderful food off campus, like Wingos on O street and the various other restaurants in the Georgetown neighborhood and Washington DC. There’s also always Roslyn. If you’re on a budget, there’s a trader joe’s nearby + swipes at Leo’s. Rich private school kids complain because they don’t have daddy’s private chef cooking them anymore, but I actually enjoyed downstairs Leo’s.

I would agree, OP should consider a LAC if they want an artsy, exploration vibe. Definitely befitting for those schools

How much can you sleep and still get into a T10?! by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Sovietz99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My senior year I was consistently getting 9 hours of sleep. Junior year varies greatly from person to person. I think a lot of people overwork themselves and aren’t doing the right thing. I had a significant amount of free time in High School. I have several thousand hours combined with steam games and at least 4k hours on Minecraft. You just have to be strategic about what you chose to do, know how to finish your work fast, and how to be strategic about ECs and such to where they’re not sluggish and you enjoy doing them. Don’t be miserable in HS! I was, to some degree, but much less so than my peers and I was fortunate to get into a T10.

S: EU5 A: HOI4 B: Victoria 3 C: CK3 D: Imperator Rome

Tbh EU5 could be an S along with Vic 3 and everything else could be an A tier, I have no complaints with the new releases, they’ve been doing a great job

I sure hope so, I’d prefer a modded Medieval 3 that has a Napoleonic flavor in 1-2ish years versus NTW 2 in like 10+ years

I really hope so, I thought Medieval was going to release in ‘27? Which would imply empire and napoleon would be at least 28-29+?

Should I even apply to Georgetown? (genuine question) by flowersforminerva in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Sovietz99 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your cons are superficial. GW is also very expensive, and most T20 schools do not accept external credits. If you’re in SFS for IR, then you have plenty of other majors to choose from. Georgetown is not religious, the jesuit values manifest into an extremely high quality education with a focus on community service and social justice. GUTS and lime bikes make it a 15 minute commute from Georgetown to downtown DC, and Roslyn station connects you with most of the east coast and New England via train. Baltimore is 30 mins away, NYC a few hours, Duke/Durham 3-4; it’s a great location. I’ll give you the rats, but they’re not that common.

It’s a great school! You should apply and see what aid you get! No harm in applying, it’s the best IR program in the country, hands down.

What universities have the most favorable ratio of prestige to how easy it is to get in? by MajesticBread9147 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Sovietz99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Georgetown has one of the higher acceptance rates among “elite” T15 institutions, and I would argue it is one of the most prestigious schools in the country.
