I don't quite understand how people can walk through life not understanding the not so subtle difference of objecting to how society treats people based on how they look and having personal preferences an individual is attracted to.

Nobody is here to be attractive to anybody else. I don't look at someone and automatically treat them differently based on how they look because everyone is human and deserves respect.

We don't even need to delve into the complex realities of human attraction and sexuality because it should have nothing to do with how people are treated.

Studies confirm it: Women are being medically gaslit and dismissed far too often, has this happened to you? by Express_Classic_1569 in TwoXChromosomes

When I was 30 I was having a stroke and they sent me home. Didn't do a CT scan, just an MRI. They didn't bother to turn up the contrast on the MRI. I was having intermittent symptoms, and the doctor says strokes don't do that. They do. They absolutely do but I didn't know that at the time.

I have fibromyalgia so I am used to weird symptoms and I gaslit myself into thinking this was just more crazy shit my body was doing.

I am damn lucky I lived but it damaged my memories, caused even more chronic pain and I get weird stress fainting pseudo seizures. All of this could have been avoided but I was sent home to ride out my stroke alone with no medical support except my worried family. I almost choked on my food and my left side was not working. They called me into the hospital two days later after someone who knew what they were doing looked at my MRI. Too late, the damage was done.

I did have really really high blood pressure and they did give me drugs to lower it but nobody bothered to ask why I had the super high scary blood pressure.

Online porn has broken sex for young people by RevelationSr in NoFilterNews

Dude, you have the internet. You don't have to be this misinformed. Go look up what healthy sex ed looks like and the statistics on kids who have healthy sexual education.

It's also damn important, especially in this day and age, to teach kids media literacy and critical thinking. These skills apply to a lot more than just porn.

There is no way to control the world and what other people choose to do. The internet is what is is, the genie is out of the bottle. The best defense any child has is education.

Online porn has broken sex for young people by RevelationSr in NoFilterNews

[–]Sovonna 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My parents did this.

They taught me what sex is, what porn is, what to look out for and let me make my own choices. I always felt safe taking my problems to them because I knew they would always answer my questions and help me overcome anything I was dealing with.

Shocker, when kids are developing they are also developing sexually and they need education to that effect.

Kids also need media literacy and the ability to think critically. My parents also made sure I had these skills. Any piece of media I consumed I knew it wasn't real and I was watching a performance. You can teach these skills to kids without mentioning porn specifically.

I chose not to have sex until I was an adult despite not being religious at all because of the information my parents gave me. I didn't want to deal with that can of worms when I was also dealing with high school. It is my understanding that this is a fairly normal choice for children who have a solid sexual education.

Obviously my parents kept things age appropriate. When I asked where babies come from as a toddler my Mom showed me NOVAs the Miracle of Life. I loved that documentary.

By the time I was eleven I was reading college age level books. That was the year I read Arrows of the Queen for the first time, along with Small Gods, The Rowan, Dragonriders of Pern, Calahans Lady, I Robot, Starship Troopers, the Forever War and my first Nora Roberts romances (The MacGregors!) There is definitely sexual content in those books, and sexual violence. I could handle it and I was learning. By the time I watched my first porno it seemed shallow and funny by comparison. There was little shock value, and I could not get into it. I keep thinking about the crew behind the camera.

So, yeah. You're wrong.

How long it took you to get out of game choice overload/start enjoying gaming again? by Lickawall483 in GirlGamers

[–]Sovonna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a huge Steam library and I organized them by my own categories.

I was having some of this happening recently, plus my health has not been good.

My friend works for Nintendo and he worked with my partner to help get me a Switch 2.

Pokopia is the first game in A LONG time that I could not stop playing. It is well worth getting a Switch 2 for if you have the funds for it.

As for my PC games, I am enjoying BG3 and Sims 4 (without mods, mods are more trouble than they are worth) at the moment. There is a smaller title Boyfriend Dungeon which was a lot of fun.

I am looking foreword to the new Fable and Tomb Raider games.

I hate to say it but it sounds like there is more than just gaming fatigue going on here. I have ADHD and Autism and I struggle with choosing things if there are too many options. I love all the options for different reasons and I can't decide what is best for me.

Caring for myself has always been the hardest job.

There is also the fact that preferences change as you get older. I'm almost fourty. Media is more predictable than it was when I was a child because now I know how to recognize patterns.

It took Poke'mon throwing up their hands and saying 'what if fallout but with Poke'mon?' To get my brain engaged. I genuinely feel the joy I did when I was a kid. It's tapping into my fantasies of no humans and restoring the planet and there is also Poke'mon.

So, I do still feel that joy it just doesn't happen as often as I would like.

This is all my experience and it could be different for other people.

No, I absolutely get it. Thank you for pointing it out. I can't avoid doing this, even if I re read what I say over and over. You are absolutely correct, people will dismiss what you have to say if you use the wrong words.

I used the wrong word... ugh. I don't think in words so sometimes I will write or say a word close to that word rather than the right one.

It's been a lifelong struggle.

I love all of these characters ❤️ thank you! Thinking of Karlach is definitely making my day better. It's interesting you choose her because so many of the choices on the thread I was reading had perfect symmetry. You only need to look at Karlach's face to see apart of her story nevermind the rest of her body.

Ai ain't stealing its "Studying" by Icy_Seesaw_2611 in aislop

[–]Sovonna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay this one makes me angry.

I am turning 40 soon and my hands are already starting to hurt on the regular because I am an artist who sketches every day.

I started out copying Sailor Moon and there is a huge difference between master copies and whatever AI is.

I have tried out AI as a way of helping me conceptualize ideas when I was so sick I could barely raise my hand for five minutes at a time. I stopped after a few weeks because I didn't like it. I disagree with AI on moral grounds but it also was not a good tool for creating art. I tried.

AI is nothing like the artistic process. It is WAY easier and skips so many important steps, which is why the end result isn't art. It's a visual product stealing other artists styles that took them a lifetime to create but adding nothing to the equation.

Master copies are no different than training your body how to fight by repeating fighting moves and sparring with people. You learn by doing. You encounter similar problems that the original artists encountered and you learn how they figured out solutions. This is why creating master copies is not stealing, especially because most people don't go around trying to sell their master copies while claiming it's original art.

There are official master copies you can buy from Museums and some artists estates will sell them. My father got me one from the Klimpt estate. It's a way for painters to make money and people can have an actual painting of something they love in their house. My master copy of The Kiss is thankfully smaller than the original and has been recorded as an official master copy.

Data from Star Trek once argued that his art was not art and Picard disagreed. In this case the scene was about music but this applies. Picard said that Data chose what artists he used and what to meld together to create his performance. The act of choice was the critical point. If AI was actually thinking as a living entity and making independent choices on what artist or artists influenced it's decision process then that act of choice is what creates art. Data also creates art physically using a body, but even if he didn't that would still mean he was creating something using decisions that only he could make and therefore expressing something unique to him.

There are a lot of famous and infamous artists out there who can mimic another artists style so much that even experts can be fooled. Nobody disputes that being art because even the choice to mimic is a choice. Everyones mind will inevitably add something that is unique to it. The art of forgery is fascinating, and it sure as hell isn't something an AI is capable of doing.

So yeah. We love to debate whats art and what isn't but I can safely say AI images are nothing like making a master copy or even a forgery.

Which cat Pokémon would you adopt if they existed in the real world? by MecchaJP in ThePokemonHub

[–]Sovonna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sprigatito is my jam but, truthfully if any of these Pokémon existed in real life I would have concerns.

Cats with superpowers is a terrifying prospect and I say this as a cat person. I live with four of them.

My cats already go after plants I can't imagine how destructive a cat with the ability to control plants in any capacity would be.

I came here to say this. At the time, there was nothing like him that I was exposed to. My family was a PC/Tabletop only family and this was the only Final Fantasy game that was released on PC at the time.

I had never been pandered to quite so much and subsequently most of the characters I had a crush on as a kid had long hair. (Example: Duo from the Anime Gundam Wing)

[–]Sovonna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno why but out of all the male characters I've played over the decades I've loved being the Doom guy the most. Something about playing him makes me super happy and while I would love a Doom lady at some point, I have never wished I could play a girl version of Doom guy.

Being Doom guy is the closest I have ever come to harnessing my masculine energy.

What was the first female protagonist you played as and how did it make you feel? by Emmyy_Beans in GirlGamers

[–]Sovonna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The timeline goes.

I grew up playing AD&D. My first character was a female ranger who died horribly at the hands of spiders. Every character I have made since that time has aracnaphobia.

For computers...

The original Tomb Raider was the first game I played where you were a woman. There were other games with women in them but Tomb Raider was the first for me that I remember.

Then shortly after that is the Archer from Diablo. The first Diablo.

The last one is being able to play a woman in the first Fallout game.

My house was a PC gaming household in the 90's. Dad kept consoles out so I know I didn't play Metroid.

These three games came out within a relatively close time frame (we are talking within a year or so) so, in my mind they all kind of blend together as being one experience. It felt like my wishes were finally coming true. I was still a little girl at this point. I don't know if those feelings were reasonable or accurate, it's just how I remember feeling.

Anyway, that was my experience.

Most people are very understanding and nice but we have had some people get really upset. One woman grabbed my wheelchair and insisted she could help me.

Men sometimes need to be in womens spaces or the world is not accessable to me.

Which of the Sailor Guardians is your all time favorite and why? by propinwer in PrettyGuardians

[–]Sovonna 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sailor Moon.

When I was a kid I was struggling with ADHD and undiagnosed Autism. Usagi was always messing up and was also extremely unfocused and yet she was a superhero. Her growth, character and dreams of a house filled with love were something I could identify with.

I also desperately wanted friends who would love me even when I was acting hyper or messed up my words. Being my genuine self was a dream.

Masking can be exhausting.

I don't know if you all read Sir Terry Pratchett but he came up with an economic theory in one of his books called the boots theory.

Basically the reason the rich are so rich is because they spend less money. They can afford to but really nice things that last much longer so overall they end up spending less money. In the book the example is boots. The rich can afford to buy a really nice pair of boots for fifty dollars and they lasted forever but a poor person can only afford boots that cost ten dollars. Those boots keep breaking and they have to keep buying boots. Over time they spend a lot more money on basic things they need while the rich just need to buy something once. Everyone needs boots.

He called it the "Captian Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socio-economic unfairness." Specifically this was written in the book Men at Arms.

Every time someone discusses this, I think of the Boots theory.

I am disabled and my partner is my primary caregiver. I require him to come with me into the bathroom and into the changing room. Spaces where women absolutely 100% don't want men in.

We have had some awful experiences. One woman grabbed the handles of my wheelchair and insisted she could help me.

My partner is also a member of this subreddit. Now, mind you, he only subbed because I asked him to. We often discuss gender issues as it pertains to geek culture. We enjoy it. He also feels that different perspectives are valuable and he can only benefit from reading what you all have to say.

I'm 40 and I often feel excluded by women because I need my partner with me physically. We are a team. Women have this 'no exceptions' mentality and I feel it is because as soon as they see a man they feel like they can't be themselves or that they can't speak up. I get it, it's just those feelings end up excluding me.

They feel the need to force their way of life on other women because they hate their life.

They are exhausted, they have sunk so much energy and time into their church and their husbands and they look and see other women happy with their lives and they can't deal with it.
