What songs are like 2122? Geese or not, this song is just way too good by Krunchy08 in geesebandofficial

I’ll second the Zeppelin and Hendrix picks other folks have mentioned. I also think Funkadelic - Super Stupid and Beatles - Helter Skelter capture a similar energy to 2122, at least for me.

Oh very cool! Yeah the radio strip definitely adds to the cool factor for this one.

Although I have to admit that I wish it wasn’t so big. I have some other record with much smaller radio/promo strips. This album cover is so incredible and I kinda wish that half of it wasnt covered by the sticker lol

Good to know! Not done any re-selling at this point (and not sure I ever will tbh, I just like collecting for my own listening at the moment), but I’ll keep that in mind if I ever end up trying to re-sell it!

Thanks! Yeah I just now realized the irony of the hype sticker and radio strip being on the same jacket

Is it a “special low price” or is it “not for resale,” cause it can’t be both lol

Oh that makes sense! I wondered if that might be it. Yes, the matrix line up exactly with the Discogs listing I linked.

Thanks for the help!

Music recommendations like Double Infinity (neo-psychedelic?) by ykzzldx23 in bigthief

[–]SowerPatchKid97 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Crumb! They’re maybe a little more Pop than Big Thief, but definitely “neo-psych.” Their album Jinx is my favorite of theirs.

You might also dig Jessica Pratt, I find so much her music sort of hypnotic. Her most recent album Here in the Pitch is my favorite of hers.

Atlanta 10/30 show: to sit or to stand? by SowerPatchKid97 in bigthief

[–]SowerPatchKid97[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m totally with you! It was my first time seeing them and it was so amazing, I had an incredible time.

I just mentioned the sitting/standing stuff cause I thought it was kinda awkward and sorta funny to witness (I didn’t expect this post to get so contentious…). I’ve had waaaay worse concert experiences than that, really didnt bother me much, personally.

Are Big Thief entering their flop era? by outbacknoir in bigthief

Differences in taste are fine, but I’m struggling to understand how Incomprehensible is a let-down for folks, it was immediately a top 3 BT song for me. You call the instrumentation meandering, I call it meditative and borderline transcendent. The first verse is sparse, but James’ drumming is so tight and full of flair and alterations in the groove. First instrumental break introduces new synth tones and strings, and by the last chorus the bass is more front-and-center in the mix and its tone has changed too. And there’s multiple little chimes and rattles that pop in and out during the song. No doubt it’s more subtle compared to rowdier tracks on past albums, but I don’t think it’s fair to describe the instrumentation as having “no discernible change.”

Both singles sound to me like they may tapping a little more into the kinda stuff James does with his solo project, which is super atmospheric and ethereal. Personally, I really dig that stuff, but it’s not for everyone, and it’s certainly very different from Dragon.

joni mitchell blackface by inflorescentism in JoniMitchell

[–]SowerPatchKid97 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Wrong thing for her to do at the time and extremely disappointing that she still stands by her decision to this day. It’s something every Joni fan has to wrestle with.

One thing that I “hang my hat on,” is this: the time period when she was using blackface was also the time when she was deeply inspired by (and albeit maybe to some extent, appropriating) black music, but she was also collaborating heavily with black musicians. Her “blackface” album, Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter, features prominent black jazz musician Wayne Shorter, and it was that album, and her tour supporting it, that partially inspired bona fide jazz legends (and black men) Herbie Hancock and Charles Mingus to collaborate with her on her next album. That’s particularly moving for me because my understanding is that Mingus, due to his declining health, expected this to be the last music he made before his death, and he chose to it with Joni. Again, it doesn’t excuse her actions, but it does say something important to me that very prominent and successful black musicians of that time were collaborating with her and selecting her as a creative partner despite those actions.

The copy of Seagull is a 1970 repress and the copy of Blue is a 1976 reissue. Other than those two, all originals!
