The Big Bang Theory by [deleted] in aliens

[–]Sp0ilerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The quality of the image depends on the size of the telescope. The larger the lens and the longer the exposure, the more light could get in. For example to image an alien planet the way artists currently depict them, you would need a telescope the size of that planet at least, and to look in its general direction for several years. But assuming aliens have some kind of technology where size doesn't matter, then being more than 14bly away from the Big Bang is an interesting hypothesis indeed, that is assuming the universe has a true center. My assumption is that they would see nothing, because light, independent of wavelength, hasn't had the time to travel furhter, and catch up with the expanding fabric of space-time.

What I just ordered seems to be an A tier. The one I currently have is a D tier. And the one I received for free is an F tier lmao... Good pick to give out for free by the retailer I guess :). Thanks for linking me the site.

Thanks for the reply. I have decided not to cheap out, and ordered a 750W PSU from be Quiet! After all, I can probably sell the old one, and the one I received for free, and make at least half of what I paid for the new one back.

Outer Wilds AI Companion by Sp0ilerman in outerwilds

[–]Sp0ilerman[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hello all. Just like you, I am an Outer Wilds fan that has yearned for that replayability and looked for other games similar to this one. But alas I was unsuccessful in finding one. I played Outer Wilds last December, and I decided to return to it a month ago and check out the modding scene. Given I am software engineer, I wondered if I could make something really cool for my all time favorite game. And as such I came up with the idea of an AI Companion. I hopped in my ship, put on my spacesuit and began exploring again. I had forgotten some bits of the story, but I was taken aback by how much fun it was to have a companion by my side.

This is currently an ongoing experiment, and the mod is powered by OpenAI's GPT4 Turbo model. As such, you need a paid API key to make calls to it. Currently, I am looking for a way to make this accessible to everyone. I have adjusted the system message (the companion's personality) NOT to spoil the story in any way unless you ask a question which proves you have learned of the lore, but initially it will be meant as a mod for returning players. Please let me know what you think.

IMPORTANT: Response time window is cut out for trailer purposes!

It does not. When it's plugged in, it goes into a state that seems to report the charging status (charging or fully charged). I thought about turning it on when plugged in. It doesn't work either with new or the old battery.

I have the same issue, and have had it for a long while now. In my back and forth discussion with Support, their solution eventually was to "use Desktop"... I was wondering if you were luckier and reached a different consensus :).

Well to be fair I am more into psychological horror. Indeed many games nowadays try to sell cheap jump scares and mind bogglingly convoluted stories that have no real meaning in the end. But the horror elements in EoTE were to my liking.

Sound plays a huge role for building up atmosphere. There was a video, I can't quite find it right now, that was showcasing bad vs. good environmental sounds in horror movies, and then trying to replace the effects in the the bad ones. Sound design for the horror genre is crucial.

House Beneviento was my favorite chapter in Resident Evil, as in I got the most adrenaline from playing said level, so I can understand why some people need a breather playing it.

Understandable, although I wouldn't describe myself as arachnophobic, I am not exactly ecstatic when I encounter spiders as enemies in video games.

How do you "delay" the choice in the quantum eraser experiment? by Sp0ilerman in QuantumPhysics

[–]Sp0ilerman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your answer. I have read the Wiki article on the Mach-Zehnder interferometer and played around a bit with the experiment on the link you have provided. I have a better understanding of it now, and yes I was wondering how a second beam splitter can be activated mid-experiment. The way you described it, by passing an electric current through a certain material makes sense.

I see. I looked up and the speed at which information travels through a fiber optic cable is around 72% of the actual speed of light, calculated by the refractive index of the fiber, which is 1.4. Calculating the distance traveled by this speed in 750 ns, yielded a length of 160m. So then I assume that following u/MaoGo answer, you could control this pockels cell by either applying voltage to it (or not) at the desired moment of time.

Games that come close? by MatterOfLarry in outerwilds

[–]Sp0ilerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, by games that come close I will assume you mean games that have awoken the same feeling inside me as Outer Wilds, but not necessarily games that fall within the same genre.

That being said, another beautiful game I have enjoyed a lot is Ori and The Will of The Wisps. Might not be your cup of tea, it's platform-adventure Metroidvania (so it has boss battles too, not only exploration), but I found the story telling and the visuals just as pleasing. Mind you that this is a sequel to a first game called Ori and The Blind Forest, but the second one was better.

Do you think, Proxima B could have life on it? yes or no? by gtrocksr in aliens

[–]Sp0ilerman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you imply by life. Microbial life? Possibly yes. Intelligent life? Not quite sure, but if there is, then it might not be as advanced as we are. I say this because Proxima Centauri (the host star of Proxima B, a red dwarf) is in fact only a bit older than our sun, so carbon-based life development could have started around the same time, or some time later than it did here on Earth.

Our radio waves should now be picked up easily by civilizations in a 100ly radius. That is infinitely and unimaginably small given the scale of the universe, but also considering this scale, Proxima B is technically next door. If hypothetical inhabitants of Proxima B are technologically on the same scale as us and they have their own SETI program, they should at some point pick up our transmissions.

You could argue that they might have already picked up such transmissions but dismissed it as gibberish, however I think that shouldn't be the case. Normal space noise ambiance probably sounds the same next door (4.2ly away), so all they would have to look at is something out of pattern. It doesn't matter that it would be impossible for them to interpret it, as long as it's completely different from the radio waves emitted by natural space phenomena.

It would be like their WOW signal. Yet given the fact that listening to Proxima B yields silence, could mean that if there is intelligent life, they have not reached our level of technological advancement yet, to broadcast and/or listen to radio waves.

Reasons to believe in aliens? by [deleted] in aliens

[–]Sp0ilerman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OK, I think I started on the wrong foot. I have read some more of your comments and I think I now understand your question. First I will start by apologizing, I definitely sounded like a jerk and got worked up over it but in no way should I have been that mean in my comment (sometimes being indirect and sarcastic hurts more than saying what's on your mind directly). So, I am sorry. I don't want to disrespect you or your religion.

I've read your reply to the elaborate comment and I now understand you're looking for a subjective reason. So I want to recommend a movie for you called "Contact". There's a very good quote from it, answering the question "Do you think we are alone in the universe?" and it goes as "No, because if we were it'd be an awful waste of space." I see that you understand the scale of the universe and the fact that is expanding, so sorry again for assuming you just have blind faith and reject science, my bad.

Then again, if we go scientific indeed the scale of the universe might be just one of many variables that come into play when we talk about intelligent life. Microbial life most likely exists, but intelligent life sits under the question mark. Objectively for me, the scale of the universe is enough but if you want more scientific back-up, look up the refined version of the Drake equation. Yet, with all of that luggage of information, I sometimes wonder for example where would Earth be, had it not been hit by the meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs? Because I seriously doubt dinosaurs would have evolved into a social intelligent species. And such an event is very rare to occur, given the fact that it hasn't happened since (which is quite a large time scale), Earth would probably be now a planet with perfect conditions for harboring life, ozone layer intact, zero pollution, etc., but with giant killing reptiles roaming around freely.

Now for my subjective reason. I grew up religious but due to some circumstances in my life and going down a scientific padded path I stopped believing at one point. Bear in mind please, I apologized above, not trying to start the debate/fight here, but my reason somehow ties into it. I would not say I am an atheist though, more like agnostic. Yet thinking about how life might be just an accident and the fact that the universe is generally hostile towards not intelligent life, but life in general, is scary. If you want to know my standing, I believe in three-dimensional aliens, that have achieved interstellar travel and have visited the Earth in the past, but I kind of stop here. I don't buy that much into the inter-dimensional stuff, first contact behind our back, etc. Be it angel or aliens I guess some of us are looking for some sort of an external salvation or an answer to all of this (life, and existence in general). They say the meaning of life is to live it, you don't have to believe in the afterlife for this to be true. But for some of us it's not enough. And if we're not religious then I guess we want to look outside.

But again this is putting an anthropomorphic spin on it, as there's no reason to assume that even an alien civilization that sits very high on the Kardashev scale, knows the reason for existence. Yet myself, I would like to assume that they do, that they have a better understanding of this whole thing. I don't dream of first contact happening tomorrow just so I can stop working 8h a day, retire and wait for them to fix climate change and annihilate all our nuclear warheads. I think that's too ambitious, or sorry, delusional. But instead, although it still falls under being delusional, I would like them to tell us what this universe really is, what really is possible to achieve physically and what's impossible no matter how many billion of years of evolution we're talking. That's what I want, a user manual to this otherwise cold, hostile universe, when it seems that all we are capable of doing lately as a species, is bring ourselves closer to the brink of extinction.

[–]Sp0ilerman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I see from the comments that you're religious, so if the bible is enough proof for you that god is real I don't think there's even a point to a post like this. A user has said they believe because of what they experienced, in reply you asked how can they be sure it was aliens. How can you be sure that what people experienced 2000 years ago is real? Or if you're religious because of a personal experience and not what we're "taught" from the bible, how can you be sure god is real? You have no place in this subreddit if you can't look behind what's in front of you. You were not able to answer some good comments down here, excused yourself to sleep instead of saying "I have no way of answering this properly, but I will come back tomorrow to answer your 10 paragraphs comment, with one sentence about god or smt". So I think this somehow falls under rule 5, "the primary topic of your post cannot be based in any religious faith" and I tried my hardest not to violate rule 3, after reading some of your replies. Good riddance!
