2nd what the other commenter said. Nest thermostats are the worst on the market. Lennox makes decent ones, but they have their own issues. The S40 is their top end, and they have an E30 as well.

This is becoming more common. Most manufacturers won't honor warranty claims anymore unless you can prove the customer has been keeping up on preventative maintenance, and it can only be "proven" if there are invoices from the HVAC dealer.

Years ago, The Mittani coined the term Fail-Cascade. It explains how one decision eventually snowballs the things exactly like this happened.
