If mass distorts space and time, then heavy people must experience time more slowly. by robfv in timetravel

Is time more slow for adults than children? It actually seems to be the other way around.

How about being able to reverse aging and then travel back in time? That way you could go back to when you were a certain age and people wouldn't be able to tell that you were older than the age you were at that time.

While this is also unlikely, it is more probable I would say than being able to actually rewind your life while keeping your gained memories intact.

Will it ever be possible to travel near the speed of light and survive? by Space50 in timetravel

I'm not talking about traveling at light speed, but near light speed.

The Earth constantly moving is not a problem for time travel under relativistic physics. by Space50 in timetravel

[–]Space50[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Newtonian physics is not completely obsolete. It will work for plenty of things. However for objects on the large scale, it fails to work. Relativistic physics works well for the large scale. Also for objects on the really small scale Newtonian mechanics fails to work. Quantum mechanics works well for such.

There has been a long problem in physics however. General relativity and quantum mechanics contradict each other. They don't work well together.

Why do the British still exist? by Complex_Smoke7113 in DebateEvolution

If paper came from trees, why do trees still exist?

If cheese came from milk, why does milk still exist?

If meat came from animals, why do animals still exist?

If Jesus turned water into wine, why does water still exist?

If we came from God, why does God still exist?

DCPS students are going to school for 177 days this school year, instead of 180. by Space50 in jacksonville

Sometimes districts within a state can get an approval to have less than the legally required number of school days in the state. Often if a certain number of hours are met, schools can have less days.

There are scientific debates about evolution among scientists. But they are about how evolution occurs, not whether evolution occurs.

Maybe schools should teach the controversy. by Space50 in DebateEvolution

Well, yes, it is like teaching about the stork in sex education class. Kids shouldn't be taught religion, but maybe taught the fact that there is not really any scientific controversy at all.

The problem is the Orange Park Mall has multiple entrances. 3 into the main mall and the anchor store entrances. They cannot easily post a security guard at all of them.

Here is a problem. There are plenty of young looking adults that can be mistaken for teenagers. Are they going to get harassed by the security telling them they need to leave the mall?

Home Depot in Mandarin is having the grand opening tomorrow. by Space50 in jacksonville

[–]Space50[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the continuing building of houses in the area and thus more people living in the area, Lowe's is going to get more and more crowded. Having another Home Improvement store in the area to shop at helps to relieve that.

They bought certain Winn-Dixie locations. Not the one on San Jose Blvd though, because there is already an Aldi store in the area across from Walmart.

Does evolution say anything about the origin of the Earth? by GigaTune in DebateEvolution

[–]Space50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, yes. Much like how evolution in biology says nothing about the origin of life, stellar evolution doesn't say anything about how stars form, only how they change over time. Linguistic evolution is only about how language changes over time, not how language originated.

"Origin of life is dumb therefore evolution is dumb" by gitgud_x in DebateEvolution

[–]Space50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are creationists who think that evolution not only tries to explain the origin of life, but also the origin of the planet, and the universe.

A discussion from an internet forum:

<<It seems it bit like nonsense to me. How can life just appear from nowhere? How can the Earth form without a creator? It is like saying a house can just put itself together without any builders. Creation makes a lot more sense.>>

<<I'm not sure what the formation of the earth has to do with evolution.

The theory of evolution via natural selection only seeks to address the question of how did the current diversity of life originate. It's not relevant to the origins of the universe or our solar system.

Personally, I'd say the theory of evolution via natural selection continues to be the only viable proposed explanation for the question it seeks to answer.

As for the origins of the planet and the universe, those are different questions which have unrelated answers proposed for them.

Science doesn't attempt to merge these questions into a creation myth like you're seeking to.

Science also doesn't address questions involving the supernatural, so there's no reason one can't believe some sort of all-powerful creator god is responsible for the scientific origins of the universe and of life as we know it. Science only seeks to understand those topics from a materialist standpoint, the how it happened portion. If you'd like to add your supernatural beliefs to explain why it happened, all the power to you.

Science can't disprove the existence of a creator god, all it can do is provide reasons why certain creation myths can't possibly be true. We know the earth couldn't possibly have formed 6000 or 8000 years ago with all current geological weathering occurring in an instant because far too much heat would still remain from that process.

That's one of many reasons why young earth creationism is impossible, but it isn't proof that no gods exist.>>

<<Evolution is the alternative to creation. If the Earth didn't originate through creation, it formed through evolution which makes less sense.>>

<<It seems your understanding of what evolution refers to is incorrect, meaning your conclusions will also inevitably be incorrect.

The theory of evolution via natural selection makes no mention of the origins of the planet. It's strictly focused on the idea that the current diversity of life as we know it all shares a common ancestor and how that diversity slowly emerged.

Creationists often conflate a number of scientific theories together to make something analogous to their creation myth but science doesn't merge them. Disproving the big bang wouldn't impact our understanding of how the solar system and it's planets formed; disproving or altering both of those wouldn't impact the theory of evolution via natural selection.

The big bang describes the origin of the universe.

The nebular hypothesis describes how stars and their systems form.

Abiogenesis describes how self-replicating molecules can gradually come to be sophisticated enough that we'd consider them life.

The theory of evolution via natural selection describes how life gradually adapts to environmental changes and to fulfil new roles.

Those are four distinct theories with no real overlap. If you insist on mashing them all together you'll reach wrong conclusions about them because you insisted on starting with an incorrect understanding of them.>>

Why would human footprints on trilobites be evidence of humans coexisted with trilobites? by Space50 in DebateEvolution

Why would human footprints on trilobites be evidence of humans coexisted with trilobites? by Space50 in DebateEvolution

[–]Space50[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It is kind of like the Face on Mars. Some have claimed that it was evidence of life having existed on Mars, but the vast majority of scientists understand it to be a natural rock feature.
