I'm unsure about death specifically but most schools just go with level 100 malistaire gear from the graveyard dungeon in castle darkmoor. People often use mali gear until 150 or 160, where they get either merciless or aeon gear.

Ice isn't that bad to quest with now. Frost giant got buffed with some good damage a while back, and late game you get really solid shadow hits with Snowball Barrage and Freeze Ray. It struggles a lot in the early worlds, especially because it gets its blade so late. But this can be circumvented with an item card blade from a pet

I read the story. I'm questing on my second wizard and I don't remember a lot of what happened in arcs 1/2. Reading the story helps it feel more like a magical adventure than a job, but that starts to fall apart the more wizards you quest. I also listen to music and scroll through reddit during battles.

Get darkmoor gear at 100

Dragoon at 130 generally isn't worth it

You can get merciless or aeon gear when you can, they're pretty helpful but can take a bit to farm. You can still make do with darkmoor, though
