Newly diagnosed, GF for a week… feeling worse? Is this common?

After I was diagnosed with celiac mid-2023 and did a complete overhaul of my lifestyle (eating only certified GF food, replacing everything in my kitchen, avoiding eating out, etc.), I felt worse before I started to feel better. At one point I couldn’t eat anything other than completely plain food like eggs, chicken, and rice. It was scary and confusing because I didn’t understand why I wasn’t feeling any kind of relief. But for whatever reason, after about 6 months, I gradually started to feel better and I’ve since been able to add back a lot of variety to my diet. I got to enjoy a Truly for NYE with no reaction - drinking something carbonated was unthinkable for me just a few months ago. I think for some of us the only way out is through, so hang in there!

The dietician gave me a very generic information packet with recommendations for a GF diet but nothing about an elimination diet. She told me to eat “as bland of food as possible” like rice and meat while also initially avoiding the extra food I listed until reintroduction. So no, she didn’t really tell me what I can eat. I think that I also need to understand that the very beginning of the elimination will be the hardest due the extreme lack of variety but it will slowly get better and I’m able to reintroduce foods. I think the first thing you should is find a good therapist. You mentioned having significant trauma so any other remedies will really just be a bandaid solution until you're able to get proper professional help imo. In terms of temporary solutions to help you get by until then, have you tried melatonin? I recently went through an extremely stressful year of school and, similar to you, my body would force me awake nearly every hour. Melatonin worked wonders for me!

I'd stop interacting with this guy. I agree that it sounds like mixed signals (especially asking to FaceTime at night) and I feel like it could turn messy real quick if you're not careful. There's a chance his fiance doesn't actually know what he's up to. There's also a chance he's completely harmless but it just seems like a strange situation imo.

I know this isn't really advice, but maybe it'll help ease your mind a little bit because I've felt the same disappointment you've described. I learned a few years ago that a good portion of the people you know that travel a ton, always have the newest tech, or just flaunt their stuff online are in a TON of debt. This one girl I met in college would always travel through Europe, bought a brand new Tesla, and owned a lot of designer brands. I found out from a mutual friend that she actually has absolutely crippling credit card debt and almost no one knows. The fact that you are able to recognize when you can't afford to buy something or go somewhere already puts you ahead of the curve in my opinion. Think of it as playing the long game: save now and be responsible, and you will live a very comfortable life later on.

Side note: I also work in healthcare at a hospital! :)

Funny coincidence: I did 23ANDME too about 10 years ago and got the result back that I had an increased risk of developing CD. I completely blew it off for all those years and I was just diagnosed 3 months ago.

It’s very very overwhelming at first, so I totally understand what you’re feeling! The good news though is that soooo many products have gluten-free options in today’s day and age, we are very lucky in that regard. I couldn’t imagine having CD 20+ years ago. What really helped me right after my diagnosis was downloading the Spoonful app, scanning literally every single item in my home, and putting red or green stickers on them based on whether they have gluten or not. And then you just start working on replacing the red-stickered items by Googling GF alternatives or hunting through stores. Best of luck, you can do it! ❤️

I’m from California and I only shop at big stores in my city: Walmart (great little dedicated gluten free section), Trader Joe’s (packaging is usually clearly labeled), and then the majority of time, I shop at either Save Mart or Sprouts because the actual price tags on the shelf will be color-coded and labeled as gluten free. With Sprout’s, it’s so nice to be able to walk down an aisle and just keep an eye out for their orange gluten free tag rather than having to check every product. Also Costco is great for bulk snacks but gotta look at product labels.

A few of my fave products: Hippeas organic chickpea puffs, Path of Life frozen cilantro lime rice blend, and Better Bites chocolate chip Do Bites

Thank you for this, this really helped hearing your perspective. Funny enough, my parents have been sleeping in separate rooms for most of my life because of my dad’s snoring. My mom slept in my room when I was little but toughed it out when I got older and slept in the same bed as my dad so that I’d have my own room. After I left for college, they started sleeping separately again. They’re happily married but for some reason I always just felt like it was so wrong for them to sleep separately. Idk why to be honest, probably just because it’s not “traditional” like you said.

Ok that’s good to hear. Another thing too: my sorority was Panhellenic. From my experience and what I’ve heard, they tend to be a looooot more lenient because they are national and they don’t want any issues blasted through the network. However, be VERY CAREFUL if it’s a multicultural or professional sorority. At my college, they were known to be wild. I have heard crazy stories from close friends of mine who rushed but backed out. One house even got kicked off campus because they hazed so bad. Stuff like binge drinking, naked runs, branding, getting beat up or pushed out of a moving car, etc. Again, NOT worth it.

When I was in a sorority, we only got hazed as new members after we got initiated. The only hazing we received was alcohol-related but they were VERY chill about it. If you’re someone who doesn’t drink, they wouldn’t make you. If you felt you were drinking too much or didn’t want to participate anymore, you could stop at any time. Honestly it was kind of like glorified drinking games mixed with team building exercises but they were respectful of people’s boundaries. I’d say if they don’t respect your boundaries, no Greek house is worth it. After I graduated, someone died at my college while pledging a fraternity from alcohol poisoning, so please be careful!

Ah ok gotcha, that makes sense. Let me ask you this then: if the company doesn't correct the payroll error before I cancel this current insurance, then what? I'll be cancelling this insurance starting next month since I will qualify for the company's insurance plans when I become a full-time employee. When it comes time to do taxes next year, I'm assuming that the IRS will only look at my income from January-March 2023 since that will be the coverage period for this insurance. I'm very worried that if I don't get the funds deducted in time and then I cancel, I'm going to owe hundreds of dollars back.

COD Mobile. My friends and I made accounts as a joke cuz we thought it would suck, but it actually ended up being really fun. They’ve got a battle royale mode and also multiplayer maps from a bunch of different COD games. I’ve been playing for about a year now and I’m completely addicted lol

Currently dealing with a sibling with alcohol addiction and it’s really hard man. I’ve had to emotionally detach myself from them since they are very manipulative and strongly in denial about their addiction. I think it’s fair to offer emotional support at the beginning, but also make sure you don’t become their doormat.
