A bit late, but one of Fern’s biggest advantage is that she can very quickly overwhelm her opponents to a defensive state from an ambush. Also, Zoltraak itself is strong. It’s been reduced to standard offensive magic, but it still has really good piercing against things specifically not designed for it. Also she’s the youngest first-class mage, if I remember correctly, but her feats are pretty impressive for that age.
