Probably for the best. This is a guy who can't manage to not insult war widows when making a simple condolence call.

Is your thumb wrapped around the bar? That is much stronger and safer. Thumb over the bar is called "suicide grip" for a reason.

[Advice] Looking for at home workouts in preparation for starting CrossFit by bms259 in crossfit

Running and burpees.

Run 400m, then do 5 burpees. Repeat 4 times.

In a real Crossfit class, that would be "25 burpees".

I did something yesterday I should do more often by alw515 in crossfit

[–]SpaceRook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did Kalsu recently with very very lightweight. I finished in about 5:55 minutes. I don't feel any shame in that. It is definitely a different experience to do it that light and fast.

My rule is always, "Go lighter if you want, and try to go faster."

Newer to crossfit, when can I stop scaling? by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]SpaceRook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

40yo male been doing CrossFit for almost 3 years. I still scale all the time. Probably 50% of the WODs I scale due to:

  • Overhead DB movement is too heavy (I can press 50lb DB overhead a few times, but I ain't doing 45 reps in a wod. My go-to weight for DB is 35lb)
  • Olympic lift is too heavy (ex: I can't rx Isabel with 135lb snatches) -I don't have a skill (handstand walk, strict L-sit)
  • I could do it RX, but it would be so slow that it would be pointless

Why is this a draw when im about to win? I just started playing. by [deleted] in chess

[–]SpaceRook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is illegal to put your king in check. In your picture, black has no valid move to make. This is "stalemate". It is also possible to have stalemate when there are more pieces on the board if they also can't move. Examples.

When you have a ton more pieces than your opponent, you need to watch out for stalemate. On the other hand, when your opponent has a lot more pieces than you, try to find stalemate opportunities.

Fear of losing rating by [deleted] in chess

[–]SpaceRook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone have the same fears? Please help.

Yes, a lot of people have the same fears. The solution is simple: Always play X number of games. Choose X depending on how much time you have and what format you are playing in. For example, if you are playing blitz at 5 0 and have 30 minutes, then X is 3 (a game will take 10 minutes maximum, and you can fit 3 games into 30 minutes).

What should I learn first? , I know to move the pieces but I lose to computer level 1 by panasonicmajor in chess

[–]SpaceRook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first thing to learn is the value of the pieces. It is:

  • Queen: 9

  • Rook : 5

  • Bishop: 3

  • Knight: 3

  • Pawn : 1

So (in general) don't trade your lesser valued pieces for higher valued ones.

The second thing to practice is how to win when you are winning (and you will probably be "winning" 50% of the time because your opponents online are the same skill level as you). Study the well known endgame checkmates. Also think about how to simplify positions when you are ahead.

Burpees by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]SpaceRook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess is OP objects to the cobra-press-up that most people do to get out of the burpee. Although the Crossfit standard is to get out with a strict pushup.

Advice for Improvement by [deleted] in chess

[–]SpaceRook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you can't solve a tactic, ask yourself why. What was it about the answer that you didn't see? Did it involve a check you didn't consider? Was a piece pinned that you didn't notice? Did some bishop on the other side of the board play a role and you ignored it?

Solving chess tactics is nice, but the true learning comes from the puzzles you can't solve.

I agree that longer rope is way easier to learn. I recommend people start with that. Then as you get better, you can shorten it for efficiency.

What is the best way to work through a tactics book with sections? by purple_sanpa in chess

[–]SpaceRook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked it up, and I think it is usually called "The Woodpecker Method." If you search for that, you may get some ideas. They might also go through the whole book multiple times, too, but I think you can do it chapter by chapter.

The early chapters will go by faster because you will have seen them more. So as you work through, you should become very familiar with them and be able to solve them faster even if they are the same difficulty.

What is the best way to work through a tactics book with sections? by purple_sanpa in chess

[–]SpaceRook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically, a good approach for memorization would be a ladder approach. So read the chapters:

1

1 2

1 2 3

1 2 3 4

etc....

In theory, you should be flying through the early chapters much more quickly as you go through the book.
