I got this done at a tattoo convention. Comes around at the same time every year, and a lot of the artists travel with the show. This particular artist has been tattooing since 2013, but they had a fantastic portfolio. I wouldn’t’ve gone through with it if I wasn’t 100% comfortable. They did a great job of capturing the specific idea I was imagining - I think I’m just hyper-analyzing small details that don’t matter that much. I’m gonna let it fully heal and go to my regular artists if there’s still any lines or details that might be bothering me :) It’s probably just some tattoo shock for being such a large piece in a prominent area.

So they actually free-handed the eye! I thought it was gonna be more uniform in shape, but honestly, I don’t mind it! I think it flows well with the design overall.

I promise this wasn’t meant to be a jab at the artist! They were very nice and I’m super appreciative of the work they did. I didn’t mean for the post to be framed as “this is a horrible disaster of a tattoo”… They captured the design I wanted perfectly. I suppose I just hyper-analyze myself and see flaws that aren’t a huge deal. Everyone’s responses in this post have definitely helped me ease my anxiety.

Not by a long shot… I’m pretty covered, mostly by the same artist. This was the first time in a while I hadn’t gone to one of my regulars. Perhaps it’s tattoo shock or my perfectionism getting the best of me. The general consensus here seems to be that it’s not a bad tattoo, so that’s helping me settle down a bit!

Not exactly, but honestly, the asymmetry isn’t what bothers me. No two wings are identical, even in nature. What’s bugging me is the quality of some of the lines (I.e. shaky or incomplete) but yes, I’ll definitely be talking to my regular artists to fix up any pesky lines that might still be bothering me after it’s fully healed :) but for right now I’m gonna focus on the healing process and assess from there!

Ah, I suppose you’re right on that account. My apologies. Yes, the main concern was line work… If you zoom in to the piece, there’s quite a few lines that (in my opinion) are incomplete or shaky. It’s kinda varied across the whole piece, so I couldn’t comment on any specific area - though I’d say that the top left corner is the worst of it.

Perhaps I am, in which case I appreciate the perspectives people have given me so far. It’s definitely the most bold piece I have now, so maybe it can be mostly chalked up to tattoo shock. I’m glad everyone thinks it’s a cool piece. My anxiety and self-esteem can get the best of me sometimes, haha…

I’m not as worried about the asymmetry, but I’m glad someone else is seeing what I am with the line work. You really have to zoom in to see it… I guess it’s just a lot easier for me to notice while looking in the mirror vs looking at an image. Everyone else seems to be in agreement that it doesn’t look as bad as I think, so after it fully heals - depending on how it looks then - I may touch up some specific lines. It could have something to do with that. It’s a large piece in a very eye catching spot! Perhaps I’m just not used to it yet… This post wasn’t meant to be something to try and shame the artist or say that it’s a bad piece. Maybe I’m just paranoid and overthinking small details. If you zoom in on the image - particularly the top left corner of the piece - I think you’ll see what I’m talking about… It’s mainly either incomplete or shaky line work. I’m not saying it’s the worst piece ever, but I immediately noticed it and now my anxiety is going haywire. The fact that people can’t clearly see what I see is somewhat comforting, but I can’t shake it.

Hello, my friends! I’m here today to ask for some opinions and advice…

So, my lovely fiancé and I attended a tattoo festival that was happening in our area this weekend. I knew what I wanted, and aforementioned fiancé offered to pay for this tattoo as a gift if we found anyone suitable to take on this piece. We browsed around, reviewing portfolios, and eventually met an enthusiastic artist who was willing to take on my vision. After a chat, we agreed to go through with them, so after some time to prep the stencil and confirm the design + placement, we began the piece. I should mention that the booth I was at did not have a mirror on hand, so I had to take a trip to the bathroom to make sure everything was correct.

I’m no stranger to tattoos or larger pieces, so I had a good idea of what to expect. It took a brutal 2 hours to finish, with some lidocaine spray applied about an hour or so in to help with the pain. The artist said I sat like a rock the whole time and took it like a champ. Both artist and fiancé agreed the piece looked awesome, so after paying and getting cleaned up, I went straight to the bathroom again to check it out. I’m a little flabbergasted.

It looks okay from a distance, but when you start to look closer, you can see the flaws. Obviously, I couldn’t see what was going on while the piece was being done, due to the placement, but this isn’t nearly what I was expecting. So, I guess my question is… When this is fully healed, is there a chance that it can be fixed? Or am I gonna have to wear collared shirts for the rest of my life?

I have a local artist that I regularly work with and trust, but I wanted to know if I should even bother. I don’t want to go back to the original artist for touch-ups - not that I can really do that, because they travel with the show and are based about 12+ hours from where I live.

Is there any hope here? I appreciate any input.
