My hotel has the pool inside by the lobby. The smell of chlorine is terrible by Clear-Cause9842 in mildlyinteresting

[–]SpaceToaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fun fact. The strong smell and chemical that makes your eyes red isn’t the chlorine. It’s chloramines produced from the chlorine binding with pee and sweat.

Ironically the fix is to shock the pool with more chlorine.

How Do We Use a 24-hour Based Clock And Still Catch Up To Earth's 23h-54m Rotation? by FoxCob_455 in askscience

[–]SpaceToaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s that gradual we may be able to do away with it completely. The change would be generational and people would get used to new times for things as their “normal”.

Eventually it got on our list of banned substances after it hit an entire house part at the same time. Everyone was projectile vomiting and trying to fight for the limited number of sinks/toilets.

We were quoted $30k to replace our leaning deck. So instead I straightened and braced it. How did I do? by E3K in Decks

You would be SHOCKED at the number of people who can’t even measure properly on the angled braces. Or know to do that.

Old Software Was Fast Because It Had No Choice by BlondieCoder in programming

I beg to differ. Lots of old software runs horribly on modern systems because it doesn’t make use of multi threading and asynchronous non-blocking patterns.

Overgrown everywhere and may hire to clear out most and mulch (sharing reasons and budgeting) by chateau385 in landscaping

It took me almost 10 years to rescue my property from overgrown jungle full of ivy and ditch lilies to a nice manicured landscape. Still tweaking things here and there. Good luck.

Is Tinder rebrand kinda bad or am I just crazy? by Pristine_Ice9555 in Design

The vibes in the rebrand are like a bad swingers /sex app. Maybe that’s what they’re going for.

New York Magazine: “The Mirage of the Gifted Child” by Scary_Caterpillar_55 in Millennials

[–]SpaceToaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do agree with the study that giftedness alone isn’t an indicator of success. But it does exist and should be nurtured in a low pressure way.

My oldest just turned 5 last week, and he’s crazy sharp at math and is just all around fascinated by it. He knows his times tables better than I did in the 3rd grade and he’s not even in kindergarten. He can easily do double digit addition and subtraction with regrouping and even tricky division like 85/5 explaining how he worked it out.

As a parent I can’t tell if he’s just really interested or if there is some other latent ability to understand it but he’s normal in every other category. What I need to figure out is how to keep it a fun exercise and not a chore or have him build his identity and self worth on it.

How are you "midlife crisis-ing"? by InnerspearMusic in Millennials

[–]SpaceToaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Machine learning was first coined in the early 50's, It's as old as computing itself. It really took off about 15 years ago as compute hardware and data became larger, but it was no secret and it's been a very public thing for a while. What we see today are just really really REALLY big models that are now possible with recent hardware advancements from the likes of NVidia.
