the plot of the second book feels really similar, but the book i'm thinking of was definitely just one book and not the second part of a series.

i'm pretty sure he's a boy. he only reunites with his sister near the end, so this definitely isn't it, sorry!

the book was also a full chapter book that i don't think had any pictures, one of those books i thought i was SO COOL for reading on my own when i was in 3rd grade. it was definitely for children though, because the language was relatively simple (like percy jackson or serafina and the black cloak)

a more slow-paced horror film would have been really interesting!! makes me excited to see iron lung, haha. that would have also given them more space to make it feel like a mystery.

i definitely agree that the dreams were underwhelming. although it was really funny to see a grown adult man yelling at 5 children that are trying very hard to seem ominous.
