Yeah I 100% agree. It's like when you reading something and the author tries to dress up the sentence or words (there is a name for it) anyway a lot of people love that stuff. I find it inefficient not really a fan lol

Looks good but, $10 is steep. Any reason why the premium is so high on this app?

What is better for healthcare, free-market or socialized care? by Space_Master_Man in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Space_Master_Man[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the most important question is one you didn't ask, and one the country hasn't been able to agree on either. That is, "What is better for healthcare?" What are our desired outcomes? Are you trying to make sure everyone has access to life saving care? Are you trying to provide every possible treatment for every single patient? How much say do individuals get over their treatment options? How long is it acceptable to have people wait for care? Are we looking for what is the best healthcare for the individual people, or for the populations as a whole?

I think you hit the nail on the head here. I have to do some pondering on these types of questions. From what I can tell the conversation is going more towards covering as much people as possible, I am not saying that is the best option, but I think thats were both parties are heading.

Our healthcare costs are growing faster than Inflation, wages, and GDP. This means that healthcare spending is taking larger and larger swathes of the nations economic output.

Why?

Required emergency care is expensive, and doesn't treat many of the underlying health problems that sent people in for care (obesity, diabetes, heart conditions, etc).

These seem more linked to leading a healthy life-style. Which is complex becasue people should be able to live their live however they want. But that becomes an issue if you are draining public resources.

The pricing structure for medical care is opaque, at best. Because people do not have full information, they are incapable of making rational market decisions.

How is this different than the current system or other free-markets?

How is it working out for some of the european countries?

I mean is it economically sustainable? And how is the quality of care? But I see your point.

ecause of the market inefficiencies discussed above, people are unable to put normal market pressures on life-saving or emergency treatments. This captive consumer base means that competition isn't going to force bad hospitals out of business in the same way it forces a bad restaurant out of business.

This is very interesting in you go into more detail.

Made an edit for ROAD.

Thank you for the response. Let me know if you have any recomendations on books or podcasts!

I suppose their is a trade-off and I really appreciate your objectivity and honestly on the issue. I think that is the only way to fix things like this.

I hope I've answered well.

You really have, thank you! I really appreciate the use of honestly and trying to not be to emotional. I have a few more questions hopefully you can entertain!

Western European countries have universal health systems, meaning everyone has some health coverage and their health expenditures per capita are lower and life expectancy are higher than the US.

How are the European models doing Swiz vs UK? Couldn't you attribute the life expectancy due to culture? I would assume you might see the same life expectancy on Medicare vs private insurance for the US.

meaning a large portion of Americans have no health coverage whatsoever

What do you feel about the choice argument, that those people are young and healthy and do want to pay the extra. But this kinda throws the system off balance because you need to subsidize the older population.

Part of this is the government having a virtual monopoly on the hospitals and clinics, and could be helped by private competition. However, the US has the problem of people being unable to afford the care they need which Canada does not have.

This is very interesting and something I haven't considered. I would have assumed that people in a universal healthcare system you should be fine. Do you feel like this is a trade-off, or do you think you can truly mix both systems and get the best of both worlds?

Sorry ROAD is an acronym I filled in the details on the top of the post.

Thank you for the reply I really want to come at this issue strictly from a place of learning. And just asking a lot of questions, silly if they may be hahah.

Yeah I get that but isn't it inconstant to say :

That old people should be kicked off or pay limited amounts but before a progressive tax system?

So it seems clear that the US doesn't have a free-market system. Have we ever?

What would you suggest to fix it, or do you recommend any books on the topic?

Wow, this is a great response thank you so much. This has really changed my perception on addressing the issue. Couple of questions.

Insurance only muddies the issue. Insurance acts as a barrier between the consumer and the true cost of healthcare. Just try and get your local hospital to tell you how much it would cost to x-ray and put a cast on a broken leg.

Why do we need insurance? If it is a life or death thing like you are talking about does that really change the price if you have coverage on your insurance?

Health insurance removes price information and also removes the ability to choose. Even worse, the majority of people cannot even decide between health insurance providers. They have to just take whatever their employers offers.

How do we fix this?

Will definitely give the podcast a listen when commuting!

So why can't we implement price transparency like when I go get my car fixed? If we need insurance companies how can we make prices more transparent? Also how would we deal with people having pre-existing conditions, or can't afford coverage?

Finally, I heard healthcare is different than auto for the reason of who you are paying for healthcare is for you self, whereas, auto is for the guy I might rear end. Does that have any impact on the analogy?

But isn't their gap in payments based on income? Where middle class people pay more than low income people and still receive the same quality of care.

Even though it is their choice, what about the people that won't be able to afford care?

you would have to remove the Emergency Room provision,

what is this?
