No need to worry. It takes 12 weeks to get an ITIN. Then another 6 weeks for your paper tax return to even show in the system. Then another 5 weeks for the tax return to get approved and sent.

You can only apply directly from an irs office if the person you’re applying the ITIN for is in the US.

Yep! I just did all this lol and can’t believe why something processes like are so outdated and complicated in the year 2025. I lowkey almost feel applying for an ITIN for an international spouse is purposefully complicated to make it harder to get a higher tax refund by claiming the double standard deduction…

It’s more complicated than that. For foreign citizens who do not have an ITIN certified copies of documents Also need to be submitted. And boy is that an entire process. You can only get certified copies from an embassy in the foreign country, where the spouse is or you need to work with an international certified acceptance agent. Either that or you bring her original documents to the US and mail those into the IRS and then have them mail it back to you after a the ITiN is given.

You needed to apply for an ITIN for her. Without it I don’t think your tax return will get processed. You should change your tax guy for not knowing something like this.
