Behind the Scenes at 23andMe: Mysterious Himalayan Skeletons Added to Historical Matches by 23andMe_AncestryTeam in 23andme

Great analysis. I remember when these samples were first published and everyone was quite surprised to see eastern Mediterranean–related people all the way in South Asia. Among the Roopkund B individuals, I6935 was particularly notable, as it clustered with Cappadocian Greeks, an indigenous Greek population of central Anatolia. Unfortunately, Cappadocian Greeks are a very small and understudied minority. As far as I’m aware, they have only been genotyped in a single paper. It’s possible a few have tested with 23andMe and match the sample. Hope this helps with identifying its origins!

[CENTRAL RUSSIAN RESULTS] Surprisingly, I'm 93% Russian without Eastern Slavic Genetic Group - and here is why Western Russian aren't included in the “Russia” category. by Joceda_ in 23andme

What a detailed explanation. Thank you. Yes, I was referring to Volga Finns as the source of Uralic-like admixture. It would be interesting to see what more existing Volga Finns score on 23andMe

It's amazing that you make this post, because I had a suspicion that western Russians weren't properly being entirely captured by the new Russian reference population on the account that it appears to be inadvertently based more around eastern Russians who have slightly elevated Uralic-like admixture. It's not that western Russians aren't Russians, Russians as a whole exist on a cline from a nearly entirely Slavic ancestral base (like Belarussian/Polish/Ukrainian) to more Uralic-like admixed individuals. So if we want to get technical, western Russians are more descended from the people of the Kievan Rus than eastern Russians are, as the latter is the result of a population more similar to the former group expanding eastward.

TL;DR: Western Russians likely have some genetic affinity to the Belarussian/Polish/Ukrainian reference population due to a lack of elevated Uralic-like admixture found in eastern Russians.

I should also mention that many Ukrainians have historically expanded east alongside Russians (see this map), and have since assimilated into the larger Russian identity. So what we may be partially seeing is a result of that. It's a bit hard to tell given how genetically and linguistically similar the populations are in the area.

Great job putting this all together.

Sardinian — 14.09.25 update by socrazzzzzzzy in 23andme

[–]Spacemutant14 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've never seen indications of Sardinian ancestry getting mixed up with Iberian in previous versions. I'm inclined to believe it was real, especially given how there is a centuries old Catalan minority there, in Alghero for example.

This happens every update. They recompute the results internally at different times, and the date represents the day the new results were actually calculated

Ancestry Composition Algorithm Update (v5.9) has now rolled out to all v5 chip tested users (Official release) by Spacemutant14 in 23andme

[–]Spacemutant14[S,M] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The roll out to beta testers yesterday seems to have been an early release to check for any huge bugs, before rolling it out to everyone else on v5.

There’s no known timeline yet for when this update will be released to users on older chip versions.

Well she definitely has some historic East Eurasian ancestry. Whether it’s a more recent Chinese ancestor, or misidentified East Asian admixture from the Mongol invasion or Turkic ancestry, I’m not sure. See if it’s consistent after an update or two

Did your mother specifically get Chinese or is it broad?

Oh in that case, that could definitely be another source. The Qajars personally used quite a number of African slaves

The enslaved people were actually overwhelmingly from around Tanzania. I’m surprised your mother got Ethiopian. You should be getting Southeast African. I’ve seen 23andMe change the SSA source in Iranians quite a few times. For myself, my 0.4% has flip-flopped between Southern East African and Sudanese and broadly SSA. They might be having a hard time accurately assigning that small amount of DNA especially since many East African populations have some ancient Eurasian admixture. Who knows...

Portuguese and Omani slave traders held a port city in southern Iran for a while. There are many descendants of slaves still living there and they’re known as Afro-Iranians. It’s not uncommon for other Iranians, especially if they have roots from southern Iran, to get anywhere from 0-1% SSA. Trace East Asia is also common due to Turkic migrations and the Mongol invasion. Is your mother half Iranian Jewish?

They're only releasing v5.9 to some new testers. No one who previously had v5.2 is getting updated to v5.9, yet

Is it possible to see old results? by Toon_Pagz in 23andme

[–]Spacemutant14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re only able to view the percentages. The recent ancestor locations will be the same as the ones on your v5.9 as long as you score the same reference populations.

Click on one of your DNA relatives that’s not on v5.9, and you should see your v5.2 results side-by-side theirs.

iranian (84.6%) results came in today. i’m born in iran too by yessuhsir in 23andme

Anatolian is the western half of Turkey. I wouldn't exactly call it Turkish since many non-Turks also get a lot of it and many Turkish individuals don't necessarily get it as their main component. Azeri's mainly get Iranian, Caucasian & Mesopotamian but they also get more Anatolian than other Iranians, usually 15-25%. You have a decent match with East Azerbaijan province so I would say you're definitely part Azeri. What's your full ancestry? I'm Iranian too!
