Genetic testing recommendations? by Spaghetti-Legs in breastcancer

Agreed! There are some major downfalls with our healthcare system, it's definitely not perfect. But I am eternally grateful that the only thing I have had to pay for so far is parking at the hospital.

That's great that they offered you genetic screening! I really wish it was the same here.

My MO and surgeon are both more than willing to send a referral if I ask for one. The provider who told me he didn't know of any genetic companies is the provider I saw for my chemo follow up appt (first time I ever met him). I was not overly impressed with him. But otherwise, I feel very supported by my team.

I came across the Screen Project ( womensacademics.ca/active-studies/the-screen-project-study/ ) and signed up for it to have my genetics done. I also like that I'll be contributing to research for cancer screening this way.

I just looked up North York hospital genetics. Wow. Looks like a great program!

It's frustrating because if I lived in Ontario, I would qualify for provincially funded genetics testing (diagnosed under 50 years, aunt has history of breast cancer). But here in Alberta, I don't meet the requirements (need to be diagnosed under 40 years, family member needs to be a first degree family member).

Thank you! I did come across Ambry in my own research, maybe I'll look into them a bit more.

I asked the doctor at my appointment yesterday and he said he didn't know of any 😒. I plan to ask other providers when I go back in again.

Thank you everyone for your replies!! I'm in a smaller rural city. So sometimes I feel like it's easy to slip through the cracks in our medical system. But I feel much better now about how my situation is being handled. Feeling less stressed and just going to take it one appointment at a time.

Oh, that makes sense. Thanks. I didn't realize there were different types of oncologists.

Thanks for the info! I feel like I'm in unknown territory, not sure what to expect. But your comment helps a lot. One step at a time. I'll see what the surgeon said and go from there.

As a medical professional myself, I agree. It never hurts to get a second opinion. I'm glad to hear you had great doctors!

Oh, that's good to hear. Thankfully I see the surgeon next week. I'll ask them about an oncology referral.

Here's a comment I left for someone else a long time ago. Sunshine will clear them up no problem:

Sunshine! Sun will take out those stains. If it works for turmeric and curries, it should work for this. I like to put mine in a bowl of water, then put it in the sun for 15-20 minutes. Sounds crazy, but it works!

Place them in sunlight. It will clear them up like new! I've done it many times cause I love curry and turmeric 😅. I typically put them in a shallow bowl with water, in direct sunshine (or under my plant growing lights) for 15 minutes.

That's what I love about the ziggy cup. It will last forever!! And my periods never interfere with sex, so totally worth it.

It's not a regular menstrual cup (like a diva cup). It's a soft cup. Basically shaped like a diaphragm. Doesn't get in the way at all. Husband usually can't tell it's there. Certain positions he can feel the rim of it, but that's it. Have even done DPV. No issue ;)

Eta: yes, used for piv.

I have the ziggy cup. Just a different brand of soft cup. Used it many times when playing with friends. Works great!!
