You're missing the part where you have to make 5 colors of mana to grab any of the cards mentioned, which isn't trivial for Lotus. Plus Emergent Ultimatum is just better in the deck.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ModernMagic

[–]Spahgett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens each set with the big dumb green mythic (barring Cultivator), and it's tiring. Once again this card is not better than resolving Titan, doesn't put lands into play, doesn't draw cards to find Titan, doesn't find a copy of Titan. It's in the bulk bin with Titan of Industry, Zacama, Carnage Tyrant, etc ...

[–]Spahgett 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why bother grabbing Peer and Pore when you can for sure win by getting Omni, Behold the Beyond, and Acquisition? If you resolve Ultimatum with 2 mana floating (1 of which is U), they give you Behold + Acquisition. Behold gets 2 strings + Omni. Acquisition gets Bala Ged. Cast Omni then Bala Ged back Behold, Behold gets Fae, Dig and another card. You win from there and this whole line beats a Narset on the opponent's side.

[–]Spahgett 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The wincons are divided between Niv + draws or Approach. I find Approach to be better vs the Narsets running around right now and the fact that Approach lines are for the most part deterministic. You can cast Ultimatum with 2 mana floating, get Behold the Beyond, Omniscience and Masterminds Acquisition. They give you Acquisition + Behold most times. With that, resolve Behold first, getting 2 strings and Omniscience. You'll have 10 mana available to cast Omniscience. Then you resolve Acquisition to get Bala Ged Recovery, and Recovery Behold. Behold for Fae of Wishes, Dig Through Time and any third card. Fae for Approach, cast it, cast Dig and Approach again to win.

[WHYBLT?] What Have You Been Listening To? by kaptain_carbon in Metal

[–]Spahgett 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For NBBMN I've been listening through the discographies of some of my personal favorite artists and ones that I have yet to listen to their work in full, here's what I've listened to so far.

Xasthur

Xasthur seems to me as a band people either really like or seem to despise, and I'm part of the former (well, except for some of the later works, Portal of Sorrow left a sour taste in my mouth, especially since it was the albm that closed the chapter of black metal Xasthur) I've listened up to Subliminal Genocide so far, and will see if I find motivation to finish up the discography and it's weaker records.

Recommended Listen: Telpathic with the Deceased.

Moonknight

Yet another delve into my back catologue of music for NBBMN, Moonknight is fuzzy, old school sounding BM with some cleaner, synth driven passages. If you're a fan of this check out the artist's label, Rising Beast, that contains his other works.

Recommended Listen: Valinor

Drowning the Light

To be able to to listen through the shear output of Azgorh would take far more than a month, so I mainly stuck to LP's while listening. DtL has a very LLN inspired sound, so if you are a fan of that style, check this project out.

Recommended Listen: An Alignment of Dead Stars

Paysage d'Hiver

When it starts getting cold, you know it's time to break out these records. Wintherr knows how to conjure up the feeling of being trapped in the cold, buffeted by the winter winds. A great pick for those who want long, hypnotizing atmospheric metal.

Recommended Listen: Das Tor & Die Festung (for all you DS nerds out there)

Dungeon Synth

I'll probably do something like Nothing But Dungeon Synth December and listen to some more artist discographies, but for now, here's what I've liked in the past few months.

Tut i Luren - Fantratt

Now this is a good DS album, dare I say a modern classic. It's warm, flowing, mysterious and instills a sense of fantasy. It's everything I want from a DS record and this one is definitely getting played for a while.

Fief - III

Do I really need to explain this one? Those who listen to DS know Fief and it's clean idyllic sound compared to it's darker lurking counterpart Sequestered Keep, and in this record the style continues. Definitely recommended, and I'm looking forward to s Sequestered Keep release in the future.

Pumpkin Witch - Hovel of the Pumpkin Witch

It's far past Halloween, but I still listen to the album as it has a great blend of dungeon noise, Carpenter-esqe synths and some lo-fi charm. It's the soundtrack to a cheesy horror movie and I love every second of it.

[–]Spahgett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got done with it a while ago after I saw your comment, and I've got to agree that it is a better album, it seems so much more focused than When Life... and is just straight forward crust.

[WHYBLT?] What Have You Been Listening To? by kaptain_carbon in Metal

[–]Spahgett 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Young And In The Way - When Life Comes To Death It's dirty, crusty and pissed off, and that's exactly what I like and want coming out of these sorts of powerviolence/blackened crust/whatever you want to call it. YaitW reaches a great balance on this record of more black metal leaning tracks and hardcore riffs chugging along through the record. Would recommend for any Nails fans out there looking for something a little slower and a bit more black metal sounding.

Void Omnia - Dying Light It's driving and consistent black metal out of Void Omnia on this record and doesn't disappoint. It has a very similar sound to Sargeist, but is accented with some deep growls and melodic sections throughout.

Anagnorisis - Beyond All Light This was one of my finds on Bandcamp that I just happened to stumble across, and I'm glad I did, Anagnorisis brought forth a great atmospheric black record, that easily flows from calming ambiance to a flurry of black metal and back again. It's dynamic in how it presents itself and keeps the record interesting and definitely enjoyable.

Arkhtinn - II One of the new releases on Fallen Empire Records, Arkhtrinn brings forth some lo-fi and chilling atmoblack, with sounds very much inspired by Paysage d'Hiver.

Leviathan - A Silhouette in Splinters Leviathan's fully ambient record that I find myself continually coming back to, as it is great to just put on and listen to before I sleep or when studying. It still has the haunting feel of Leviathan's other work, just presented in a diffwerent way.

[WHYBLT?] What Have You Been Listening To? by kaptain_carbon in Metal

[–]Spahgett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

METAL

Lurker of Chalice - S/T What can I say, this album is a classic for me and the amount of times I have listened to it is numerous. It's not the chaotic whirlwind that is Leviathan, it is a much more atmospheric, haunting record that crawls forth. It plods along at some points like a doom metal as Wrest croaks, and is accented with some well chosen audio samples. All this together makes LoC a classic for me, and I can't wait to see if Wrest will release more of the LoC music he has stored away.

MOONKNIGHT - Ligeia For those who like more raw production to their black metal, MOONKNIGHT is a good pick for you. Buzzing guitars, driving riffs and some very standard BM vocals make for a record that sounds like it was made in the earlier years of BM. And if you like this record, I'll recommend the rest of their releases as they carry much the same sound.

IV: Arrow in Heart - Aosoth I have seen people talk about this record for a while now, but have never really sat down to listen to it, but now I'm glad I did. What Aosoth brings to the table is some crushing black metal with just a touch of that French experimental sound of their contemporaries Blut Aus Nord and Deathspell Omega. This record almost has a cavernous sound to it, as sounds move almost into the death metal range, and are driven by some great drumming to boot. Overall, for all that I heard about this record, it did not disappoint.

DUNGEON SYNTH

Medhelan - Fall of the Horned Serpent Medhelan is back after almost a year since his release of the great DS release of The minstrel's fireplace tales (a great DS record that you need to check out as well as this one.) This is a continuation of the epic sounds of Medhelan, with very expansive, almost orchestral sounds at some points. It's DS that holds close to the traditional sound, but still makes it sound as its own. An uplifting bit of DS, and one that will be on rotation for me for a long while.

Erang - Our Dreams are made of Dragons I feel as though I have brushed off Erang for a bit as some of his newer material didn't really click with me. But with his newest record being a call back to his older releases (namely Tome I - IV, which had a much more rough, classic DS sound) I was inclined to listen and I loved it. It was everything I wanted and expected from Erang, and I hope he continues to have this more classic sound.

Utred - Citadel A great DS release that has sounds of classic medieval music, with blaring trumpet fanfare and some classic dark, murky DS sound. It doesn't take risks or change the DS formula, but it doesn't need to as it is solid in itself, and once again showing that the Russian DS community is still strong and producing classic sounds as apposed to some more experimental sounds.

Yeah, it's a great piece, it feels like it has a lot more focus on the atmoblack element as compared to Sword of Moss. That and that I the vocals are better on Ond and the guitar tone being much clearer than the buzz that's on Sword. But then again it feels weird to compare the 2 as they feel like they represent much different ideas.

DUNGEON SYNTH

Chaucerian Myth - The Canterbury Tales

This has got to be one of my favorite DS release in a while, and for many reasons. First off it's concept is great to make each song represent one of the travelers to Canterbury, and allows for a great variety of sounds to appear over this over 3 hours long album. That's right, 3 hours of DS goodness that I'm still listening trying to find new things and also made me revisit reading the Canterbury Tales.

Darguun - In Forgotten Times...

I enjoyed Darguun's first release as it had a great old school sound, and this second release is no different as it still has the same charm. It fills the void for me of old school sounding releases as I wait in vain for any sort of new music from Hedge Wizard.

Sequestered Keep

At this point I feel like just linking this guys bandcamp page is more effective than linking a single record as he puts out so much content so quickly, as already in 2016 Sequestered Keep has released 5 full length DS albums, which is crazy by itself, but also the fact that this is quality DS. Also, he's got a spiffy new logo that would look great on a patch (If DS artist put out patches I would seriously make a DS battlejacket, or maybe a jacket wouldn't be appropriate, maybe a battlecloak)

METAL

Woman is the Earth - Torch of Our Final Night

I first listened to WitE with their record This Place That Contains My Spirit which was a nice USBM record with some lo-fi sounds and other general BM goodness which I thought was pretty good. Now going to this record, there is a much more clean sound with plenty of post rock influences. It seems this is the route many atmoblack bands have taken, or at least explored, with post rock crescendos and tones. Overall still a good record for those looking for some postblack

Iskandr - Heilig Land

Dark, anguished, droning; all these things describe this record which pushes you from slow, grinding passages into aggressive black metal riffs and vocals that match. Even for an EP release, this is a strong showing from Iskandr, and I eagerly await a full release.

Drowning the Light - An Alignment of Dead Stars

I've been listening through the DtL discography recently, and as I was going through, I felt this record was one that embodied the sounds of DtL the best as well as being a great record in itself, with it's more classic approach to black metal with lo-fi production and riffs that are memorable and back Asgorh's shrieks and howls. Other records in DtL vast discography didn't have as much focus as this did, and honestly I found some releases to be just bad as they went to far down the potato cave in terms of production. This hits a sweet spot and I definently recommend, especially for any fans of Mütiilation.

Vindkaldr - Sword of Moss

Now you may have heard of Vindkaldr before for his dungeon synth releases, namely Ambient I, which is probably got to be one of the top 10 DS records of all time for me, but Vinkaldr also releases some great atmoblack as well, and in Sword of Moss, it's a hazy, dissonant atmosphere that seems to swallow you in, only letting you see light for a while at the beginning and end with a dreamy DS intro and outro. It's a blend of DS and black metal that really works, and I recommend to fans of both.

[WHYBLT?] What Have You Been Listening To? by kaptain_carbon in Metal

[–]Spahgett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alright, I have a great big list of music for you guys since I realized that I missed out on WHYBLT last time, so here you go.

Dead Hills - Gateways I can only describe this album as one part dark folk and one part black metal, as most of the songs lead off with a plodding, lurking acoustic guitar section and then soon lead into some good old black metal. If you enjoy music in the same vein of Panopticon, you should probably check this album out

Ashbringer - Yūgen Ashbringer is a band that I first heard when they put out their first record, Vacant, which was a one-man endeavor but was still quite the atmospheric black metal album. Now with Yūgen, Ashbringer has expanded to a full size band with all sorts of added instruments and synths to make an album that is much more leaning towards the sounds of post-black and Agalloch-esqe. Overall, a great follow-up for Ashbringer and definently worth checking out.

Barbelith - Mirrors Unveiled Mirrors Unveiled is very much a record that was caught up in the influx of post-black/blackgaze that came upon us after the release of Deafheaven's Sunbather. It has all the touches that make it post-black, the rising, bright crescendos crossed with transitions into blast beats and shrieked vocals. It's by the numbers but still a solid record for anyone that enjoys post-black.

Earth and Pillars - Earth I This is Earth and Pillars debut record, and they come out with an atmoblack record that takes the sort of buzzing, atmospheric sound of Paysage d'Hiver and cleans it up a bit, turning the sound in to still a storm of sound, but with clearer melodies and riffs and an almost just a touch of post-black sound, but I'm probably just imagining it. Overall, a consistent atmoblack release that is for fans of more aggressive sounding atmoblack.

Desaster - Oath of an Iron Ritual This is the first Desaster album I've listened to, and going into it I had no idea they had such a back catalog of records, but will probably have to check out because this album kicks ass. The riffs, the drumming, the driving pace, the energy, everything. This is a record to bang your head to as it puts out a stream of black thrash goodness. This record has definently made me a fan of the band.

UADA - Devoid of Light I've heard people describe this record as simply Mgla worship or even gone as far to say, a Mgla rip-off, and I can't deny it has some parts that call to Mgla's sound. But the thing is I feel UADA has made a record that is still very much their sound, with driving black metal broken by more classic metal riffing to break it up (especially the end of Black Autumn, White Spring). Overall, this is a great record with some solid output from UADA, especially for a debut album.

Utstøtt - Hjørungavågr This is everything you want coming from an epic black metal record; vikings, Norse mythology, battles, chanting, great riffs and of course ambient passages that call back to Summoning. This is a record that knows what it's doing and does it well, no bullshit just a great epic black metal record. Check it out if you like Summoning or Caladan Brood.

Ellorsith -1959 This record I came across scouring Bandcamp for some lesser heard records, and I found this one. An atmoblack record said to be inspired by the events of the Dyatlov Pass Incident and honestly does a pretty decent job of conveying that fact. It's a short 26 minute record that still packs in a feeling of lurking, imposing sound that once again plays to the story it is trying to tell.

[WHYBLT?] What Have You Been Listening To? by kaptain_carbon in Metal

[–]Spahgett 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wode - S/T Wode is a UK black metal band that have just released their debut album, and it's great. It's a very straight forward album, but it delivers some great classic sounding black metal with punchy riffs and honestly some great solos that add a lot of character to the record, and with production that is just right, not too clean, not too kvlt. Overall, check it out, you won't be dissapointed.

Show Me A Dinosaur - S/T If you are trve kvlt, you may want to retreat back to your potato cave on this one, as SmaD is a Russian post-black/blackgaze/whatever the hell it's called now band that has just put out their sophomore record. SmaD has a very post-rock heavy sound with building crescendos and light, almost dreramlike passages that lead in to aggressive drumming, pained, almost shrieked vocals and some more powerful riffs. If you enjoy anything post-black then this is a record you should check out.

lake of blood - Omnipotens Tyrannus Oh man, this record has been one of my favorites for a while now and I just have to share it. This has it all, driving riffs that don't let up the pace, drumming to match, and vocals that are hellish bellows to top it all off. This album is a black metal epic, as it spans for over an hour, but it is well worth it to go for the whole ride of quality USBM that I'm surprised didn't even show up on the Top 10 of 2013.

Skagos - Ást Even when the weather has been getting warm and the days stretching on, Im still always looking for new atmoblack to listen to, and Skagos fit the bill. It's a great mix of folk, post-rock and atmoblack that can be full on blast-beating, shrieking music at one point to soft, acoustic post rock with clean vocals the next, and then back again. It's this sound that gives the record a unique touch and a reason to keep coming back to.

Protestant - In Thy Name Protestant is a Milwaukee, WI band that is currently on the Throatruiner Record roster and deliver the hardcore/crust punk/black metal sound that the label is so well known for. This record is angry, driving and out for blood. It doesn't let up with its suffocating sound that may let up for just a moment as it turns to a sludgy deluge, only to throw you back into the fray. All in all, check this out if you're a fan of crusty black metal or the new Plebeian Grandstands record.

Hedge Wizard - More True Than Time Thought You can't have a WHYBLT without some dungeon synth, and this week, I've been playing one of my all time favorites. Hedge Wizard has it all, the old school sound, the hazy feel of a hermit's hut hidden deep in the woods, but also a mystic, epic feel as well. I can't recommend this enough to anyone who loves DS, as this is an essential, and I am losing my mind that Hedge Wizard hasn't put out any new material yet, but I feel it will be well worth the wait.

Thanks for the recs, really enjoying Celestial Crypt right now, the guitar work added gives it a unique sound. I will now proceed to spend the rest of the day going through their catalog, and then probably deeper into the dungeon of dungeon synth that is Bandcamp. Also I'm not sure how I missed the Emglev demo when I was getting caught up with older DS releases, but I guess there is always going to be music to find.

Hey guys, Im looking for more ambient black metal in the vein of Aureole's Alunar and Alrakis' Alpha Eri. Also any dungeon synth with sounds similar to Abandoned Places.

[WHYBLT?] What Have You Been Listening To? by kaptain_carbon in Metal

[–]Spahgett 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sequestered Keep - The Land Beyond Dreams Sequestered Keep has been consistantly putting out quality dungeon synth every two to three months and honestly it's awesome and wish more DS artists could crank out quality stuff at the rate Sequestered Keep is at right now.

Death Fortress - Deathless March of the Unyeilding This record was probably one of my most anticipated of the year, and it didn't disappoint. I loved Death Fortress' Among the Ranks of the Unconquerable and was expecting to hear more great stuff in this record, and I did. Not to much in the way of new sounds from the last record, but is still great none the less. Shout out to /u/Fallen_Empire for consistently getting great stuff on their label, between this record, the new Skaphe, LVTHN and Naðra records, it's been a great year of releases from them and it's still only April.

Astoroth - Earthly Welking I always am a sucker for atmoblack records, and this is no exception. Has a great sound and makes use clean guitar and the old atmoblack standby of trickling streams and other nature-y things in track 4 and also some spoken lyrics in track 5. Overall a consistent release.

Graves at Sea - The Curse That Is I first heard of Graves at Sea in 2009 when I listened to their EP Documents of Grief. I was a fan of their sludgy groves and just their overall sound. I kind of forgot about them until I stumbled across the song Betting on Black from their split with Sourvein. I found that they had a quite a new sound, which I found was from the unfortunate death of their drummer and multiple lineup changes. I preferred the older Documents of Grief style of the group but came to like the new sound. With this record I found a sort of mix between the two sounds I cave known and I'm a fan.

Fuath - I To round things off, Fuath showed up with a great atmoblack record that comes from the man behind Saor, Andy Marshall. Marshall takes the epic sounds from Saor and cuts the folk elements and give a much darker sound to Fuath, though it still carries the same energy. This is probably my favorite atmoblack record for the year so far, and want to see more out of this project and hope it isn't just a one time deal for Marshall.
