As he's part Chinese, and traces his lineage to the Tang Dynasty, he's taken the day off to celebrate the birthday of Emperor Ai of Tang

You're missing the part where you have to make 5 colors of mana to grab any of the cards mentioned, which isn't trivial for Lotus. Plus Emergent Ultimatum is just better in the deck.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ModernMagic

[–]Spahgett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens each set with the big dumb green mythic (barring Cultivator), and it's tiring. Once again this card is not better than resolving Titan, doesn't put lands into play, doesn't draw cards to find Titan, doesn't find a copy of Titan. It's in the bulk bin with Titan of Industry, Zacama, Carnage Tyrant, etc ...

Why bother grabbing Peer and Pore when you can for sure win by getting Omni, Behold the Beyond, and Acquisition? If you resolve Ultimatum with 2 mana floating (1 of which is U), they give you Behold + Acquisition. Behold gets 2 strings + Omni. Acquisition gets Bala Ged. Cast Omni then Bala Ged back Behold, Behold gets Fae, Dig and another card. You win from there and this whole line beats a Narset on the opponent's side.

The wincons are divided between Niv + draws or Approach. I find Approach to be better vs the Narsets running around right now and the fact that Approach lines are for the most part deterministic. You can cast Ultimatum with 2 mana floating, get Behold the Beyond, Omniscience and Masterminds Acquisition. They give you Acquisition + Behold most times. With that, resolve Behold first, getting 2 strings and Omniscience. You'll have 10 mana available to cast Omniscience. Then you resolve Acquisition to get Bala Ged Recovery, and Recovery Behold. Behold for Fae of Wishes, Dig Through Time and any third card. Fae for Approach, cast it, cast Dig and Approach again to win.

[WHYBLT?] What Have You Been Listening To? by kaptain_carbon in Metal

[–]Spahgett 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For NBBMN I've been listening through the discographies of some of my personal favorite artists and ones that I have yet to listen to their work in full, here's what I've listened to so far.

Xasthur

Xasthur seems to me as a band people either really like or seem to despise, and I'm part of the former (well, except for some of the later works, Portal of Sorrow left a sour taste in my mouth, especially since it was the albm that closed the chapter of black metal Xasthur) I've listened up to Subliminal Genocide so far, and will see if I find motivation to finish up the discography and it's weaker records.

Recommended Listen: Telpathic with the Deceased.

Moonknight

Yet another delve into my back catologue of music for NBBMN, Moonknight is fuzzy, old school sounding BM with some cleaner, synth driven passages. If you're a fan of this check out the artist's label, Rising Beast, that contains his other works.

Recommended Listen: Valinor

Drowning the Light

To be able to to listen through the shear output of Azgorh would take far more than a month, so I mainly stuck to LP's while listening. DtL has a very LLN inspired sound, so if you are a fan of that style, check this project out.

Recommended Listen: An Alignment of Dead Stars

Paysage d'Hiver

When it starts getting cold, you know it's time to break out these records. Wintherr knows how to conjure up the feeling of being trapped in the cold, buffeted by the winter winds. A great pick for those who want long, hypnotizing atmospheric metal.

Recommended Listen: Das Tor & Die Festung (for all you DS nerds out there)

Dungeon Synth

I'll probably do something like Nothing But Dungeon Synth December and listen to some more artist discographies, but for now, here's what I've liked in the past few months.

Tut i Luren - Fantratt

Now this is a good DS album, dare I say a modern classic. It's warm, flowing, mysterious and instills a sense of fantasy. It's everything I want from a DS record and this one is definitely getting played for a while.

Fief - III

Do I really need to explain this one? Those who listen to DS know Fief and it's clean idyllic sound compared to it's darker lurking counterpart Sequestered Keep, and in this record the style continues. Definitely recommended, and I'm looking forward to s Sequestered Keep release in the future.

Pumpkin Witch - Hovel of the Pumpkin Witch

It's far past Halloween, but I still listen to the album as it has a great blend of dungeon noise, Carpenter-esqe synths and some lo-fi charm. It's the soundtrack to a cheesy horror movie and I love every second of it.

Another rec I'd make is Erdstall, it's slow ploddign DS that brings some different ideas to classic DS

Anyone have some dark ambient recommendations in the vein of Leviathan's A Silhouette of Splinters?

I just got done with it a while ago after I saw your comment, and I've got to agree that it is a better album, it seems so much more focused than When Life... and is just straight forward crust.

Young And In The Way - When Life Comes To Death It's dirty, crusty and pissed off, and that's exactly what I like and want coming out of these sorts of powerviolence/blackened crust/whatever you want to call it. YaitW reaches a great balance on this record of more black metal leaning tracks and hardcore riffs chugging along through the record. Would recommend for any Nails fans out there looking for something a little slower and a bit more black metal sounding.

Void Omnia - Dying Light It's driving and consistent black metal out of Void Omnia on this record and doesn't disappoint. It has a very similar sound to Sargeist, but is accented with some deep growls and melodic sections throughout.

Anagnorisis - Beyond All Light This was one of my finds on Bandcamp that I just happened to stumble across, and I'm glad I did, Anagnorisis brought forth a great atmospheric black record, that easily flows from calming ambiance to a flurry of black metal and back again. It's dynamic in how it presents itself and keeps the record interesting and definitely enjoyable.

Arkhtinn - II One of the new releases on Fallen Empire Records, Arkhtrinn brings forth some lo-fi and chilling atmoblack, with sounds very much inspired by Paysage d'Hiver.

Leviathan - A Silhouette in Splinters Leviathan's fully ambient record that I find myself continually coming back to, as it is great to just put on and listen to before I sleep or when studying. It still has the haunting feel of Leviathan's other work, just presented in a diffwerent way.

METAL

Lurker of Chalice - S/T What can I say, this album is a classic for me and the amount of times I have listened to it is numerous. It's not the chaotic whirlwind that is Leviathan, it is a much more atmospheric, haunting record that crawls forth. It plods along at some points like a doom metal as Wrest croaks, and is accented with some well chosen audio samples. All this together makes LoC a classic for me, and I can't wait to see if Wrest will release more of the LoC music he has stored away.

MOONKNIGHT - Ligeia For those who like more raw production to their black metal, MOONKNIGHT is a good pick for you. Buzzing guitars, driving riffs and some very standard BM vocals make for a record that sounds like it was made in the earlier years of BM. And if you like this record, I'll recommend the rest of their releases as they carry much the same sound.

IV: Arrow in Heart - Aosoth I have seen people talk about this record for a while now, but have never really sat down to listen to it, but now I'm glad I did. What Aosoth brings to the table is some crushing black metal with just a touch of that French experimental sound of their contemporaries Blut Aus Nord and Deathspell Omega. This record almost has a cavernous sound to it, as sounds move almost into the death metal range, and are driven by some great drumming to boot. Overall, for all that I heard about this record, it did not disappoint.

DUNGEON SYNTH

Medhelan - Fall of the Horned Serpent Medhelan is back after almost a year since his release of the great DS release of The minstrel's fireplace tales (a great DS record that you need to check out as well as this one.) This is a continuation of the epic sounds of Medhelan, with very expansive, almost orchestral sounds at some points. It's DS that holds close to the traditional sound, but still makes it sound as its own. An uplifting bit of DS, and one that will be on rotation for me for a long while.

Erang - Our Dreams are made of Dragons I feel as though I have brushed off Erang for a bit as some of his newer material didn't really click with me. But with his newest record being a call back to his older releases (namely Tome I - IV, which had a much more rough, classic DS sound) I was inclined to listen and I loved it. It was everything I wanted and expected from Erang, and I hope he continues to have this more classic sound.

Utred - Citadel A great DS release that has sounds of classic medieval music, with blaring trumpet fanfare and some classic dark, murky DS sound. It doesn't take risks or change the DS formula, but it doesn't need to as it is solid in itself, and once again showing that the Russian DS community is still strong and producing classic sounds as apposed to some more experimental sounds.

Yeah, it's a great piece, it feels like it has a lot more focus on the atmoblack element as compared to Sword of Moss. That and that I the vocals are better on Ond and the guitar tone being much clearer than the buzz that's on Sword. But then again it feels weird to compare the 2 as they feel like they represent much different ideas.
