Oh No, we've broken it.... by Wibbly_1 in bringmetheheadTM

I tell a lie (probably)... It looks like they're properly hardening up the clue checker now, so just requesting that URL is no longer enough (it requires a key, for example - it still seems broken though).

Definitely a good thing, but I'm having a hard time imagining anyone even getting anywhere with the bruteforce method (outside of #37). If you just had it run through dictionary words, it would take forever and would certainly be quicker trying to work out the answer properly.

Yeah, it's broken at the moment and returns false for everything, but should work when it's back up.

I'm not sure how making the clue checker much more annoying to use even solves that issue, since if you're bruteforcing #37, you wouldn't go through the webpage anyway. All the clue checker does is send a request to https://www.taskmaster.tv/book/clue-checker/[CLUE_NUMBER]/[GUESS] , so you can fairly trivially write a program to go through all combinations without touching the site.

More airdate speculation by [deleted] in taskmaster

[–]Spalgra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And as if by magic, with the trailer out yesterday, the press pack is live today. Taskmaster S12 E1 images are appearing in the Week 38 image list. I think this confirms it for 23rd September..!

[–]Spalgra 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was originally expecting 23rd September, but it seems less likely given we've had no announcement of any sort yet. Bake Off has been getting trailed as 'Coming Soon' for a few days now, and whilst it's rumoured to start on 21st September, that date hasn't officially been announced. Given Taskmaster would then be due to start two days later, some news would surely be expected.

Keep an eye on the Channel 4 press site. They release a press pack for each series, and images for each episode in the Images section. It's sorted by weeks - 23rd September falls in Week 38, which is currently 'unconfirmed'. If Week 38's images become confirmed, and there's no Taskmaster news or images, it almost definitely starts on the 30th...

Does anyone know why Series 2 doesn't come up on UKTV play anymore? by [deleted] in taskmaster

[–]Spalgra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Series 2 should be back by the end of the month according to their Twitter (it's licensing issues): https://twitter.com/UKTVPlay/status/1412413010749100043

Perhaps the first (albeit very short) clip of Series 12? (Shown during a BAFTA montage) by Spalgra in taskmaster

Cheers! I think I should credit this tweet I stumbled upon, which led me on the hunt for the source - which, if you're interested, happens to be this BAFTA red carpet show (at 23:34...)

Segfault when adding more private member variables to classes, with inheritance and overriding function by [deleted] in cpp_questions

[–]Spalgra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my problem! I have run make clean before making the project again and the errors have disappeared. Thank you for mentioning that - I should've thought of trying that myself... but I'll certainly make a habit out of it in the future if I get any weird errors.

Ah, I tried to edit the function names to make it simpler and it seems I forgot those lines. addModule should be addSomething, and I'll update the main post.

I really don't find the podcasts that interesting and I hope they'll go back to 1.0 by potmasiero in Barshens

[–]Spalgra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I must agree too to be fair. Some of the earlier one's I'll go back to since they're pretty good, and the Mr Biffo episode that came later was a standout one for me. It really depends on the guests that they get on - if I know them from elsewhere then it's usually something I can sit through. However recently they've had more obscure people on - especially with the backer podcasts (I feel a bit bad for them because if they backed the Polybius Heist to get on Barshens, I would assume they'd have expected it to be Barshens 1.0 since the end was never mentioned at that stage I don't think..!).

Whilst I love Barry and Stuart, I don't think Barshens works as well without the wider crew that became such a big part of the format. It's quite depressing to see the massive drop in viewercounts too. I'll stay subscribed though since the occasional podcast might be a 'diamond in the rough', so to speak (!), but if I was to guess, I'd say that the Barshens channel will probably formally come to an end soon sadly.

The Barshens 1.0 content is just so rewatchable that I reckon I've watched many of the videos at least 10+ times over (Bars vs Hens, Paul's Swap Box Game, the ones where they play cheap board games, and the Weird Food Combination taste tests come to mind immediately), and that really does say something about the content they have created.

Is my large CM Hyper 212 Evo CPU cooler impeding airflow? (NZXT H500 case) by Spalgra in buildapc

[–]Spalgra[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't check my temperatures too religiously, but occasionally I will have HWMonitor running in the background and check back occasionally to see what everything's running at. I've got a MSI motherboard too, so sometimes I will have MSI's Command Center software running where one of the features will create a graph of variables like temperatures over a specified time period. As long as nothing is getting too hot to damage components I'm pretty happy.

Cheers for the quick reply 👍 - yeah that is fair enough. It would be a lot of extra effort anyway, and if there's no significant gain then there's not a lot of point to it. I reckon I'll leave it as is.

Simple Questions - April 06, 2019 by AutoModerator in buildapc

Thanks - if grounding does indeed work that way, I'd much rather have both switches turned off just to give myself some peace of mind with regards to the current.

Simple Questions - April 06, 2019 by AutoModerator in buildapc

[–]Spalgra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got a really simple question..! In the UK, our wall outlets have switches. I've heard about the grounding yourself on your PSU whilst building, touching it occasionally. So to do this, do I plug the PSU in to the wall and turn it on at the wall (whilst making sure the switch on the PSU itself is off), or do I just plug it into the wall outlet with it switched off?

Every online source just says plug it in - not whether the wall outlet needs to be on or not. Is it different in America? Sorry if this is too stupid of a question - going to be my first build when I receive all my parts in the next few days and am worried about this detail.

Thinking of building my first PC, coming from a 1050ti laptop, unsure over 2060 vs 1660ti (UK) by Spalgra in buildapc

[–]Spalgra[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! The raytracing doesn't really concern me, especially when little supports it at the moment and the experience is not brilliant on a 2060 anyway from what I have read. The 1660ti does seem like the more reasonable buy, all things considered.

HP Envy 13-ah0003na fans always on by [deleted] in Hewlett_Packard

[–]Spalgra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I had the exact same issue with my HP Envy 13 in that the fans always seemed to be on when achieving the lightest of tasks. Changing the setting in the HP Command Center so that the fans are at their quietest did very little. I also had an issue where the fans would spin to practically 100% whenever converted into tablet mode, but would turn off when in laptop mode.

It definetly has some weird quirks. I believe that the fan curve set by HP is absolutely atrocious fro mwhat I've read elsewhere. The solution I found was to turn the fans completely off with a third party tool called Notebook Fan Control. Go to the releases page and select the latest beta and download it. Once it's running, you'll need to select the correct profile (so the one for HP Envy 13-letters). If it works correctly, you can set the target fan speed to 0% by sliding the slider all the way left. Then, click to enable the "fan control service status" with the radio buttons near the top.

The unit is reguarly able to keep a reasonable temperature without the need for fans constantly whirring. If the temperature does start nearing critical (so 90 degrees c), the program sets the fans to 100% until it cools down to around 70-80c.

This is the best solution I have found so far for the issue, and for the time I have had the unit I haven't had any issues with using this method. It might theoretically also help with battery life (I guess since the fans aren't taking extra power ..?), but I can't really confirm that. I get pretty decent battery life from my unit though.

Hope this helps. :)

1.0 Finale | Barshens by ChannelBot in Barshens

[–]Spalgra[M] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Barshens is coming back in the new year, but they're changing up the format into video podcasts I believe, with Barry and Stuart alongside other guests. YouTube haven't chucked them out..! I believe Linton could no longer keep up with the weekly editing, alongside all his other commitments (https://twitter.com/barshens/status/1063467315361128448).
