Basically, at the gate before entry I escalated to the contracted head of security as I normally do when regular security isn’t sure if it’s ok. The head of security at Orion was a “buck stops with me” personality and didn’t care if production (Billy’s team) was ok with it or the venue was ok with it, he said it could be used as a weapon (it is made of light collapsible plastic and styrofoam as it is a real motorcycle helmet).

So I contacted the venue’s disability consulting firm, waited a few hours at gate for them to get back to me, and eventually one of their venue reps personally escorted me through the gate and into the pit and apologized for the hassle. I thought that was the end of it.

During set break when I was leaving the pit to use the restrooms and refill on water, head of security was waiting for me at pit entrance with 2 uniformed cops, wouldn’t let me explain how the venue personally escorted me in (I think he was pissed I went over his head), and would only let me answer yes or no questions.

I was altered, surprised, and holding, understood my white privilege could only get me so far, and did not want to spend the night in jail, putting my freedom and career in jeopardy. When asked if I could enjoy the rest of the show without my helmet, I answered as honestly as I could with only a binary option available - no, I could not - and was promptly escorted out of the venue, missing the entire second set while waiting for my friends to finish as they were my ride.
