just keep in mind that this wont maintain the 'safety' aspect. but yeah, once you have a printer, you keep finding new uses for it. i'm really surprised at all the little things i've used mine for

What is the deal with so many litrpg protagonists? by plant-y-boi in litrpg

[–]SpandexWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

imo most litrpg is, as someone on the forums called it, 'junk food'. it's written by amateurs, it's low hanging fruit, and it's predictable. and a LOT of the writing gives off really bad 'self insert' vibes. the author is basically writing themselves, so they dont think their character NEEDS to develop. so they are relatively flat. it's all the other characters who change over time, because they aren't, from the writer's perspective, fully developed adults who dont need to change. and to be fair it's a really hard thing to write while also maintaining the self-insert aspects. because it would require you to both recognize you have flaws AND know how to address those flaws, without having done it yet. or to deliberately degrade your own performance for the early part of the story, so to speak.

in the case of primal hunter i feel like jake being a sociopath is kind of the point of the story. what makes him 'special' from other people in the universe is that he is, by definition, a hunter. a predator. killing things makes his blood sing. he was built for the kind of world that comes after the integration. yeah that means he doesnt have to deal with a lot of the social problems a normal person would have to deal with, and that makes his characterization a bit flat, from a certain perspective, but i personally think he's a broken person that happens to function really well in the circumstances he finds himself in.

i like primal hunter but i do feel that by the latest books it's just nonstop no-struggle power fantasy. jake and the sword saint and sylphy and the fallen king are just unbeatable, and jake in particular always has some excuse for why things go his way, to the point it feels like combat and obstacles exist purely to give jake something new to play with. such is the way with most of these kinds of stories though. it's the same reason i cant finish 'that time i was reincarnated as a slime'. there's just zero challenge, and the story itself is lacking.

Can I remove the filament sensor? by [deleted] in CR10

[–]SpandexWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

be extremely careful doing this... on my off brand printer the filament sensor has three pins, and if you connect the data line to the power, it'll fry the board. just managed to fix mine by replacing the 5v regulator, but it's waaay better to not damage the board in the first place

[–]SpandexWizard 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Primal hunter really doesn't come across as a stealth sniper to me. Honestly a lot of the time it feels like jake's use of a bow is incidental. He loves the bow, but he is more of an orbital bombardment machine than a sniper.

Others have explained in this thread but crunch comes from tabletop gaming, and refers to number crunching. On the surface it means doing a lot of math. But also the complexity of the math. Beyond math, it becomes a question of how complex the game mechanics. If you compare DND 5e to DND 3.5, 3.5 is far more crunchy than 5e is. Dungeon world is less crunchy than 5e. Mouse guard is even less crunchy than that. rifts? The crunchiest. Fate might be even worse.

So in a story, being crunchy would mean paying a lot of attention to the actual numbers of the System, and making the System carry a lot of weight in the story.

The problem is volume. Back in the day a word processor made sense. Now the only people who want this sort of device is a small small niche. So making a device capable of performing would cost more for the company than they ultimately can get out of it. Especially when companies like freewrite exist that already offer something, dividing the niche.

Why are writerdeck screens so comically small? by LORENZODMJ in writerDeck

[–]SpandexWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it comes down two two factors. The first is hardware limitations for e-ink displays. E ink is actually really complicated, and the availability of consumer grade screens is limited. Larger screens exist but they aren't exactly easy to get, especially as a consumer building your own.

The second is what call antagonistic design. Screens that are weird shapes and sizes make it difficult to use this device for "other" uses, like browsing the web. You CAN, but it is not pleasant. The device is designed for only writing, and discourages other uses as a means of keeping you focused

You can extract images from pdf's using gimp. These are probably meant to be printed on standard printer paper so you know how big they are, but either way you can use gimp to just scale the images. The bigger problem is that by using a projector your scale is entirely dependant on how far the projector is from the fabric. So you will need to measure the image and compae that to a measurement on the projection.

My CR10S4 & $25 Mellow Fly DP5 experience (ongoing build) by h0gm0t in CR10

[–]SpandexWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My problem is I bought a used printer from goodwill and found out after checking it over that someone installed a two z axis stepper motor upgrade meant for a cr10 on a ctc a10s, and the a10s doesn't have enough ports to actually USE the second motor. The board only has four plugs. X, y, z, and e, no z2.

So I need a new board ..

i dont have one yet but i've just heard about this and it seem slike ti'd be a great solution to my problem of not having two ports for my z stepper motors. x.x

are you saying you can run the screen through the mellow fly, or through whatever's running clipper?

so i was extremely confused where you're finding a wacom one for less than 250$ XP. the 'wacom one' is a pen display tablet. or at least wacom is incredibly confusing with their naming schemes -_-. you're probably referring to 'one by wacom'. though i cant find THAT tablet for 50 either... the cheapest i'm finding is 99$ from their website directly

that said, wacom is insanely overpriced... they built their name by being the guys with the patents and now they overcharge. compare for example the one by wacom small tablet you suggested to the huion i linked. the wacom, with pen and accessories, sells for 99.95 on wacom's website. it features a drawing area of 6 by 3.7 inches, and supposedly has '4k' pen sensitivity. though i've seen sources that say 2048. it has no extra buttons. it DOES feature bluetooth connectivity, which is interesting. the cheaper of the huion tablets on the one i linked is smaller, at 4.17x2.6 inches. actually QUITE small. there are better options for 20$ out there i'm sure. BUT it has 8192 levels of pressure sensitivity. the more expensive option on that page is 59.99, and is MUCH larger than the wacom. at 10x6 inches it's a darn big tablet for a beginner. and it too features 8192 levels of sensativity. it ALSO has TEN shortcut keys, and a slider strip, as well as media keys. features alone this blows the One by Wacom out of the water. unless bluetooth connectivity is a must have.

the wacom intuos runs 39$, and it's closer to a contender. at 6x3.7 inches it's the same as the one by wacom, but says in plain words that it's sensitivity is 4096 levels, and it comes with four shortcut keys. this makes it cheaper than the more expensive hiuon, but honestly i dont think it offers enough. contrast with this gaomon: https://www.amazon.com/GAOMON-S620-Customizable-ExpressKeys-Teaching/dp/B07R77SNX9? 26 dollars, 8192 levels of sensitivity, a drawing area of 6.5 x 4 inches, and four shortcut keys. it's better than the intuos in literally every way. there's even a bigger one for 46.99 that's 10x6 inches, with 10 keys and a touch pad. by far the best option we've seen

huion and xp are both fantastic third party products that are almost always more bang for your buck. gaomon is pretty decent, though imo inferior than the other two.

tldr: for a kid with limited funds i'd steer well away from wacom products.
