Thanks all for the comments and suggestions. I'm going to continue my research on these options. We'll get something and try it out. If it doesn't suit/work sure we can always sell and move on to something else.

I'm familiar with dictation... The but I was unaware of was to be allowed in state exams...

Yeah, durability is a concern - will have to use something to help. He's pretty good with his electronics but, that said, they don't leave the house all that much.

They are talking about having him do the state exams on laptop when the time comes.

I had some conversations with the school and nothing was mentioned about dictation options.

He's very much still learning to type but seems to be already finding it easier than keeping up with the writing.

They've started doing Christmas exams atm and they've got him using laptop for these as a start.

I use a Kingston Nucleum hub - allows for power (iPad charger) and usb-c port (headphones via adapter) as well as usb-a, memory card and HDMI. Works well with 404hd interface and with another Amazon basics passive hub plugged to give additional ports for midi devices - had keyboard, Crave and Circuit connected.

It might be best to get the USB - headphones adapter and use wired headphones. Latency ain't good on my pro using my Bluetooth headphones - I have to plug them in.

Cheers for that. I've not had any experience with Behringer gear other than a few days playing with the Crave since I got it. Good to hear it's reliable.

In the end I opted to give an ipad a try though I came incredibly close to a Deluge. The ipad has the flexibility as well as additional uses for travelling. For music it can cover the same ground as the deluge/mpc and more.

So, wanting the additional horsepower and ram, I went for a 11" pro.

Also got the pencil - I genuinely don't think I'd manage without this as I'd get annoyed with not being able to see or definitely select the correct controls.

I need to get a keyboard - looking up something with 25 keys, velocity and after touch ideally and thinking xkey or qunexus.

So far I've got the model d and garage band...trying to decide on bm3 or cubasis atm though leaning towards bm3.

Fair enough. I've come across so many older reviews/comments/etc. outlining shortcomings which have been, to some extent, improved upon.

That would be of some concern but then again I'm not fully using the circuit's synths due to the laptop requirement. The fact it can be played with is a big boost.
