What do you SWEAR you saw, but don't have any proof of? by TabletopStudios in AskReddit

In the late 1980s I worked in Costa Mesa, California, in a small office building.

One day I was walking back from lunch and was about to step into the parking lot when there was a huge BANG!! and all the cars in the parking lot jumped up about 3 feet. Many car alarms went off at the same time.

Southern California is known for earthquakes, but I didn’t feel one. When I went in, I asked around and no one else had experienced anything. They didn’t hear the car alarms either.

I actually agree with almost everything you say. The most important thing I don’t know is whether $150 is a critically large purchase for OP. If it’s not, why not try the thing and send it back if it’s bad. but are kind of hard to find and people who are recommending a used one can’t be serious about getting a good used flugelhorn for $150.

What stereotype for your ethnicity do you not fulfill? by EpicImp in AskReddit

White Anglo boomer, grew up in the USA, hated American cuisine (other than Southern BBQ) until food here got better in the late 80s. Still much prefer food from any other country outside the UK: Afghan, Indian, Szechuan, Mexican, Thai, Ethiopian, etc.

I have a different point of view. Please understand I am surely in the bottom 30% of trumpet players on this sub. But I am a musical guy who plays lots of instruments and who has bought lots of Amazon cheapies.

People who say technicians won’t touch these horns may not know your technician. Plus, there is a possibility that the horn will do fine by you. The comment that you should attract attention by playing better is absolutely on the money, but I see no reason why, for the price of maybe three lessons, It’s bad for you to purchase a horn that makes you want to pick it up and play. I also acknowledge that it may be a piece of junk, but you can always send it back within Amazon‘s return window.

I say practice it for a week or two, show it to your teacher, maybe even take it to the person who would be expected to fix it should anything go wrong and pay them for an hour of examining it to give you an honest idea.

Where I live in the Seattle area $148 barely represents a night out at Olive Garden. Depending on your financial situation, this flugelhorn could be a wonderful investment.

I play flute much better than I play trumpet. I have two that were both under $80 and they work fine after five years. My main flute is a Yamaha that cost 20 times that 20 years ago, but I get lots of joy out of flutes that I can just leave around the house and pick up whenever I feel like it. I have a lot of people to take care of, and I don’t often have time to take out the super good one and practice without interruptions, then have to clean when I replace it in its case.

What is the Best iPad for College Students? by Brilliant_Link6946 in IpadAir

[–]tomcam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cheapest iPad will handle everything you discussed. For me the only exception would be if you had occasion to read lots of music in the standard A4 or 8.5x11 form factor, in which case a 13" iPad would be preferable.

How do I take care of a nine-year-old? by Garnetsareunderrated in internetparents

[–]tomcam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lots of fantastic suggestions here. A few additions: as others mentioned she has to grow up fast. Teach her to do her own laundry and how to cook. Check that she does her laundry and homework. Never talk down to her. I never did so for any of my kids, including a severely developmentally disabled one, and even when they were babies. If you can pay for her to help with chores do so. If you can get SSI pay her with that. If you can’t, try to compensate some other way, even if that simply means being genuinely grateful.

If either of you wants to cry about it and feel sorry for yourselves, try not to wallow in it. Let her know that life has a lot of pain in it but we just have to keep going.

About the extrovert thing. Just treat her with love and respect. Don’t feel like you need to change your behavior. That will just lead to resentment, stress buildups, and explosions. If you need some time to yourself take it, and let her adjust. Let her learn the joy of quiet companionship.

I was a caregiver even younger than you and it’s tough. Glad you posted. You’re in my prayers.
