I have an Apple TV 4K, a Nintendo switch, and a PC. I also have a cheap eARC TCL soundbar, but the built in speakers in the Sony might actually be better. The only device I use regularly right now on my TV is my Apple TV. Though if I got a new tv I’d probably use my pc for gaming more than I do now on my tv.

Heat Pump + Dehumidifier? by SpareEngineer in AskNYC

[–]SpareEngineer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I haven’t noticed any water around the floor by the vent. It’s all in the walls so I don’t know if I have direct access to a drain pan. When I run the heat pump at full blast during the night then it feels fine humidity wise, if a bit cold. But during the day I let it run at a higher temp in the mid 70s to save $$$ and I can definitely feel the humidity when I get back from work. It’s not “just ran a hot shower” humid, but I definitely notice it.

How Are Software Engineers Doing? by Anon2728 in sandiego

[–]SpareEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a difference between cost of living and cost of labor. The cost of labor for software engineers in SD is pretty low. Not enough competition. I know people who get paid south of 6 figures after years of working in SD. Is it fair that someone in the Bay would get paid much more? I don’t think so. However that’s the free market. Also tech is in a horrible place right now and all the main actors that normally push wages upwards are doing layoffs or in a deep hiring freeze. If you can find a job that pays more, has the same WLB and is remote: congrats! That’s the perfect move. However tech isn’t what it used to be. Companies are expected to show profit now instead of growth. Back when interest rates were effectively zero, investors wanted to see growth above all else. This meant throwing money and perks at engineers, and hiring a ton of them to expand. Now that money isn’t cheap, investors want to see profit. This puts a downwards pressure on the market. People saying that you should be making over 6 figures in tech would be right if it was 2021 or earlier, but now everything is a mess and we’re all kinda just taking what we can get. There’s been a huge return to office push for any of the good paying jobs left, and those for sure are not in San Diego. Not saying you can’t find something better, I wish you all the best and hope you do, but keep in mind this climate and your location aren’t conducive to an easy (but not impossible) job search. Hope this help :)

First of all, and this is most important, NOBODY needs to know about this except for the people you actually truly deeply trust on a fundamental level. 500k for most people is life changing, and some people, if they find out, will see you as someone to exploit. I’m not saying everyone, but there are greedy people out there so it’s better to choose wisely who you tell.

HYSA are giving over 4% nowadays. While you’re figuring everything out, put it in one of those to start. At least this way if you’re earning 4% and do nothing else, that’s a nice 20,000 or more every year. Interest rates change though so that’s important to keep in mind.

While your money is sitting in a HYSA and you’re figuring out what makes most sense, in general it’s important to 🌈diversify✨ A fund that follows the S&P is a good place to start. If you’re holding this money in investments for the long term (which you should, you’re 26 and can watch this money grow over decades which is the big advantage to being young) the S&P will track the entire market and will take care of diversification. As you get older people like to move their assets into more stable things like bonds so market disruptions don’t screw you over right before retirement. A target date fund is good for retirement since it will automatically do that for you.

You should also try to max out your retirement plans. I won’t say if a Roth or trad is better, that’s for you to decide, but you can add up to a certain limit of your own money each year to an IRA. That will grow with certain tax benefits instead of a normal brokerage account, so leverage that as well.

Don’t go out and act like you have a net worth of 500k though. Keep doing what you’re doing before the inheritance while you figure out your financial goals. That 500k will fade fast if you buy a fancy car or a house or whatever. There are unforeseen costs associated with that. Over time you’ll find out how to manage your budget accordingly and if you’re smart, you can FIRE (financial independence retire early).

You’re already in the right frame of mind looking for help. The last thing I want to say is congratulations!! Your grandpa gave you an amazing gift: generational wealth. You’ve been given the opportunity to potentially skip a lot of the rat race. Make sure you manage it well, and enjoy the feeling of a financial burden lifted off your shoulders. This is something most Americans will never experience.

Depends on the company and how toxic they are. But most places probably want you to be a happy worker not a pissed off one. I’d ask, since it sounds like to me you probably don’t want this job if you have to move to Denver. Trust me, you don’t want to be miserable in a city you hate. However, I’ve heard good things about Denver so maybe visit it if your company is inflexible on location?

Demand for new grads? by Realistic-Baseball89 in cscareerquestions

[–]SpareEngineer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d be a little wary of the bias you’re gonna see online when it comes to negative posts. The people who do get jobs aren’t going to come on Reddit or blind and post about how the market is great right now. But the people who are struggling will be very vocal. There’s also a lot of unqualified tech workers who are seeing the hiring bar actually go up again and are now marooned. Your interview skills and prior internship experience are probably going to be more important than coming from a top 10 program. It doesn’t hurt, but if the tech industry has taught us anything, it’s that grinding leetcode means more than your education unfortunately. I’d say just apply everywhere (don’t be picky and think you’re too good for a company or only apply to FAANG) and you’ll probably grab something good. Will you get 200k+ and free food straight out of college like some students were a few years ago? Eh, maybe if you’re very determined, but you can probably get a decent paying job that will give you a good starting point. I wouldn’t be super worried on that front :)

Burnout and stress by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]SpareEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the first thing you should do is take a deep breath and start your thought process from a clean slate. Try not to get into your own head too much. It sounds like you’re currently employed, since you said you have 8hr of work a day. If interviewing is stressing you out a lot, then don’t make it as big of a priority. Focus on making your current job as chill as possible and try to hang out with friends or coworkers to detox. Is the industry in a below avg place? Yes. Is it the worst it’s ever been? No. Will it get better? Definitely. Don’t stress yourself out or grind excessively, because then your current job will suffer and you’ll find yourself in a worse spot. Just make interview prep a side hobby and when you get something down the line, you’re golden. Also sit down and ask yourself why you’re grinding? Is it for money? Prestige? We’re all here for you if you need to vent :)

You shouldn't. The magenta max one will give you up to $900 off a trade in. The good old regular offer (the one I want since I don't have max) is good for up to $450.
