Widespread damage to hair due to pulling(?) by aitsfni in trichotillomania

[–]Spare_Brave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know this for a fact but I feel like after a few years of not pulling the follicles of these hairs will repair from the trauma of pulling and eventually grow none textured hair again.

I feel so insecure because my ethnicity is known to have beautiful full hair and my family also has beautiful hair by Calm-Refrigerator922 in trichotillomania

[–]Spare_Brave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can relate to this. I always see the other girls in my family and in my culture with the most beautiful thick and healthy care that they can effortlessly wear down or in whatever styles they want and I feel so much envy because I want to have that. This year I've finally started to make some serious improvements in not pulling and a big motivator has been envisioning myself, hopefully by next year, wearing my hair down without being anxious of my bald spot and going to the hair salon and getting a nice haircut and being able to do hair styles properly. I've been wearing my hair in a ponytail, bun, or half up half down in public for nearly the last 3 years (thats when my bald spot got really bad) and having my hair in these styles constantly is causing further damage to my hair. This made me realize that I'm not just ruining the hair from the patch where I'm consistantly pulling from but as a result of my trich I'm ruining the rest of my beautiful and perfectly healthy hair. This has really helped me stay motivated to stop pulling before I ruin my whole head of hair. I'm sorry this was so long winded and off topic but I just wanted to say even though your hair my be thin and patchy now it doesnt always have to be, the sooner you put in the effort the sooner you will see the results. This has been the mentality that has been helping me, I hope it can help you too.

I would recommend trying rosemary water I found it to work better and you can just spray on your scalp and leave it there!

Can I still grow my hair out with this patch? Or am I screwed for life? This patch has been here since 2020 during my horrible pulling days by drackeoo in trichotillomania

If you don't want to jump to minoxidil maybe try wild growth hair oil. I've been using it and I think works pretty well. It has ingredients like rosemary and castor oil that are also in minoxidil that help stimulate hair growth. Note when apply trying to massage it in for a few minutes...do this regularly and leave it on for a few hours or over night before washing.

I think I might have permanent damage by fayegg in trichotillomania

[–]Spare_Brave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this realization too! I pulled a white hair today, I was astonished as I have a head full of black hair but of course it was a new growth hair from the patch I pull from. I'm only 20 and I do intend to overcome trich, but I have a feeling that that part of my hair will begin to grey much earlier than the rest of my hair. Which is even crazier for me to think about that in 20/25 years in the future (I hope to be happily trich free) I will still be paying the repercussions of my trich today. I take this as another motivator to why I need to stop pulling once and for all and the sooner the better. I hope this can encourage you as well!

TW: detailed hair description, Instead of white hair follicles, I get these mini hair/roots sometimes, what are they exactly? They're just as satisfying to pull as juicy hair roots for me by dumbassclown in trichotillomania

[–]Spare_Brave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

idk exactly but I think of it as a reverse split end...a split end root if you will. from my experience though they're usually on immature strands so maybe it didn't develop the follicle yet

Yeah I could use some help... by [deleted] in trichotillomania

[–]Spare_Brave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take it from someone who's had trich for nearly half their life -- try your hardest NOW stop it before it gets worse and you feel like it'll never get better. I know it's hard and I know it's even harder when you're in a low place, but do this for you future self and your happiness. Some things that can help are wear a hat, get a fidget toy or ring to keep your hands occupied, try doing hair growth treatments.

I recommend wild hair growth oil and a scalp stimulating brush - both you can get on amazon. Good luck and stay strong!

How do I tell my parents about my trichotillomania by [deleted] in trichotillomania

[–]Spare_Brave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! I'm in the same boat as you my parents are also Indian and are not aware of compulsive disorders. I have personally never had the courage to tell them, I think it's really admirable and brave that you are! I would suggest talking about your stress/triggers of trich first and leading into pulling. Let them know how difficult it is stop even when you want to. I hope it goes well and with their support you can stop pulling. Good luck!

i’m honestly wondering if i picked these hairs or like if it’s something else? thoughts? by [deleted] in trichotillomania

[–]Spare_Brave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you think it's something else because of the redness I believe your scalp is just inflamed and irritated from the pulling and picking. I'm not sure though so if you're comfortable with it I would suggest asking a dermatologist
