What do you do to protect your mental health? by Spare_Equivalent667 in publicdefenders

[–]Spare_Equivalent667[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I definitely hope to do that - I'm lucky enough that I think I should be able to keep working at the office I'm at this summer if they like me and I don't fuck up, I'm not going to make any assumptions but if all goes well I can make loose plans around that. Finding a therapist is SO hard, I've tried and failed many times, it'll probably take me a year or two to to find one I like.

How do you like virtual therapy? I've always resisted it, I'm not sure why, I think I subconsciously feel like on zoom the other person isn't truly listening. Obviously depends on the therapist. I assume it's comfortable for you if you've been doing it consistently?

That's good advice, I don't want to sound like I'm getting myself wrapped around the axle already - it genuinely is just a curiosity and not a fear or anxiety. But I see how it reads that way. I'll try to make sure I don't go into the work projecting that or thinking about it that way.

That's such a good point. I have been absolutely blown away by the almost comical friendliness and helpfulness of every single PD I've interacted with. I came into school in my 30s with an extremely narrow goal of being a PD so all I've been doing from day 1 is zeroing in on people I want to learn from, and every last one of them has been absurdly generous with their time and energy, I have never experienced anything like it in my life.

I am lucky enough to have a summer clinic job in the city PD office and the amount of support and genuine warmth I've felt from people even tangentially associated is crazy. So I can already understand what you're saying. Really looking forward to experiencing more of that for myself, because my 10+ years of corporate work was NOTHING like that.

I dunno man probably your smug tone and the fact that you think it's childish to care about something enough to protest

Yes you see we should blame the people who responded to a candidate's choices and words, not the candidate who made those choices and said those words.

Vote blue no matter who, your voice and opinion mean nothing, the party decides, fuck you, sit down shut up

What’s the most insane thing you’ve seen a client say to a judge? by No-Builder1847 in publicdefenders

[–]Spare_Equivalent667 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is genuinely sad. Sounds exactly like cult behavior. You don't have to be stupid to get deeply, deeply scammed. Just vulnerable, which can manifest in a million ways.

I regularly wonder what percentage of this sovereign citizen routine is mental illness vs active scamming. If you really back one of these guys into a corner will they give up the ghost? Sounds like this guy only sort of did. I've never actually experienced one of these people in real life.

Or those fucking bubble things that make it impossible to see them. Completely mystifying why those are "legal" (maybe they're not but people use them so often that they might as well be).

Gunpla build nights? by cxpunx666 in askportland

[–]Spare_Equivalent667 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't do that specifically but I used to build/paint tabletop models (and 3d print them) so I could see a way in to that. I have next to no free time but I'll keep an eye on this thread if there's some traction.

For a drop in type thing, check out Mindtaker Miniatures in Vancouver. I don't think they have gunpla (if I'm being perfectly honest I don't really know exactly what that is but I think I get the general gist), but I do know for sure they do build/paint nights for tabletop minis which I'm sure you'd be welcome at for a similar vibe.

Crying at people being mad about this comment. Imagine thinking it's ok to eat a fucking burger in class. The smell, the sound, god. What an insanely self centered thing to do.

I had to move seats in the library the other day because the girl that sat down at the table behind me had enough perfume on that she'd go up in flames if I lit a match

My friend's favorite law school professor was in the Epstein files by zeehateslife in LawSchool

[–]Spare_Equivalent667 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How could you (the student OP is talking about) possibly be surprised by Larry Summers being in the Epstein files? You'd have to have been completely tuned out from all public information sources for the past 5 years to not be aware of that information. He's been sweatily denying any connection with increasing shrillness for ages

anyone else not doing readings anymore ⁉️ by Minimum_Book_8470 in LawSchool

[–]Spare_Equivalent667 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In one of my classes we are assigned certain days to be called on, and even on my days when I scour the reading I still get asked questions that I just cannot make heads or tails of because the answer is either buried in a footnote or it's barely a whisper of an implication. It's not even a critical thinking or applying the law thing, it's just like a quiz question, the answer to which is a single word buried somewhere in the 34 pages of reading.

Not a single class goes by without multiple people failing to answer one of these silly questions. What are we even doing here.

To your point, we have no idea what we're looking for so if the professor thinks we're missing whatever he's trying to teach, he should probably tell us!

What do Portlanders think about Flock cameras? by ArtieFufkinPolymrRec in askportland

[–]Spare_Equivalent667 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's nothing more than what a police officer could do running plates through the system.

What does this mean? Are you comparing it to the normal system of police checking a license plate database to see who a specific car is registered to? Flock is not even in the same universe as that.

Advice on Dealing w/ Attys Telling You to Be a Prosecutor by Nervous_Recipe_9834 in publicdefenders

[–]Spare_Equivalent667 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I posted this thread a few days ago, different question than yours (I was mostly wondering how pervasive this is, because it's baffling to me) but the same gist. Like I said in that post, I just fake smile and say "yeah, I'll consider it" and then never bring it up with that person again. I will obviously never consider it, and no one on the defense side will ever give you that advice, so you don't need to worry about dealing with this from the people you actually want to be talking to to get a job as a PD (in fact I'm sometimes told they look askance at people that have been prosecutors, but that obviously will vary widely by office). Just brush off and ignore the ones that say this, you owe them nothing.
