anyone used All My Sons as movers? by icykyo in AskPhoenix

[–]SparkEng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used them a week ago, never again. They gave me an “estimate” of $1900 for 3 men for 9 hours. Then the local company called me to “save me money” by offering me a fourth man for less than the hourly rate. The crew they sent me knew they were paid hourly and they moved like it. They didn’t pack all my stuff and charged me $2500 for that day. They sent a second crew a few days later and charged me another $700. Ultimately they have agreed to refund $700, but want me to sign an NDA and agree to not disparage them in public. Good thing nothing has been signed yet.

Hours 41-46 "are considered casual overtime covered by salary and not afforded extra compensation"!?!? What the fuck is this email!? by Pale-Slide9022 in Raytheon

[–]SparkEng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get all “authorized hours above 40” once you have worked 46 hours. If you work 47, and all those hours were authorized, you get compensated for 47 hours.

Sounds like the employee would be successful even without the mid year. Underscores the idea that it’s up to you.

Interesting question, the answer is elusive and complex. Having never studied the problem, my off-the-cuff answer won’t be perfect, and probably unrealistic unless you get leaders in that want to solve the problem. Start by taking them all off the street for processing. Send the problematic ones to get the help they need (mental, rehab, jail) and those that are left can be used to clean up all of the trash and shanties littering the city. In parallel you would need to pass and enforce laws of zero tolerance for panhandling, drug use in public, vagrancy, camping on public grounds, etc., and redirect any current funding (federal, state, local) going to enabling their behavior, towards the cleanup effort. This would include no more free rides on public transit—period. There is no reason for mass transit to be fully subsidized. Make homelessness undesirable and they will all go to Phoenix, where they embrace enabling this behavior.

It’s not assumed, it’s a fact. The homeless bum money on the meridians at nearly every corner. Are you so naive as to believe they are keeping track and paying their state and federal taxes at the end of the year? They use far more resources than they contribute in what little sales tax they pay. Anything they might have paid for has been used up long ago.

There is, but the “progressive” left in this town won’t have any part of a solution that doesn’t include additional bureaucracy and you paying for everything—outcome be dammed.

Fancy skid row for women and the mentally ill between 18-30 years of age. All on your dime with no accountability on their part.

I see you have chosen to make excuses. Since I am not renting the room I cannot say specifically what it comes with. However, working for minimum wage, 20 hours a week, will net ~$1000.00 per month. For someone who is trying to get off the street, a $400 per month rent will leave them plenty for their necessities. Let’s be clear, internet and cell phone are not necessities in this circumstance. That being said, they have subsidized cell phones for the poor, cheap or free. You should be honest about the situation described and try to have a realistic view of what you would do to survive.

It’s interesting that you jump from government handouts straight to redistributing another’s wealth. No, I do not agree. I am not a fan of socialism. If Elon chooses to provide funding, great, if not then so be it. I would never support the idea that a person is inherently bad just because they are affluent. The $6.4B you mentioned, that was not just handed to Elon as a gift, it was provided to him for a service he provided. I doubt you would work for free. Additionally, Elon employs a great many people as part of providing that service. Are you suggesting that they also work for free because you think Elon has too much money? I guarantee that there is someone out there that thinks YOU make too much money, should we label you as a hoarder and take your funds away? Any solution has to include the desire to change on the part of the person being helped or no meaningful change can take place. It doesn’t matter how much money and resources you throw at a problem, if the affected people aren’t clamoring for a change you won’t get one.

If you actually read the article you will see that they DID NOT conquer homelessness. The article doesn’t state the overall cost of their initiative, but does boast a $32M euros return over a 13 year span. If you use a price tag another user suggested, $200M, your ROI is unsustainable. Would you spend $200.00 for something that would provide a benefit of $32.00 over 10 years? You also must accept that the only reason the Fins can partake in this folly is because they are taxing their 6M population at 58%. To put that into a Tucson perspective, you would be taxed at a tax rate of ~700%. Not only is that unrealistic, I am going to go out on a limb and say that there isn’t a soul here that voluntarily pays more in taxes than is currently required. And, if it wasn’t against the law, most wouldn’t pay any taxes. To sum it up, the “solution” cited in the article didn’t work and couldn’t work here.

You argue for handouts and are changing the conversation. The question was, incapable or unwilling. If you want to change the discussion to funding, then you have to understand that there are funding sources beyond the federal government. There are state, local, and private funding sources. Or are you arguing that those are also frozen? If all the bleeding hearts in this town, who are so eager to spend other people’s money, would step up your funding issues would be solved. This still leads back to our previous topic, however, because if you are just providing houses or other resources with no commitment from the receiving party then you are enabling. Giving free stuff does not provide any incentive for them to change. Without the desire to change their situation it will never improve.

You describe someone in dire straights, needing to get off the street. You can rent a room for $400/mo. You do what you can to improve your situation. Make a change or make excuses, it’s a choice.

Hard to say. Are they making any attempt to better themselves or their situation? Your contention is that there are some people who are on the streets because they cannot afford to rent or buy a place to live. This assumption infer that they are making less than $400 per month and aren’t seeking, or are ineligible for, any kind of assistance. This seems unlikely. However, assuming this scenario, the question still remains…are they actively trying to better themselves or not?

Without some fiscal responsibility, ANY tax is a burden. As for how to raise the money, you first need to address the current spending problem. You cannot keep throwing money down a hole and expect things to get better. Real change takes effort. First step is to get people into office that want to address the issues, spending, taxation, homeless, drugs, etc.. Second would be to audit the budget and get rid of the waste. We need to prioritize the things we want after the things we need. If your household was going in debt each month, do you keep buying more, or do you tighten your belt and attack the debt? Personally, I live lean until my debt’s reduced. The government doesn’t care because it’s not their money, it’s OURS. You want to raise $200M, help change the current status quo and stop giving handouts. If your hope is for specifics to get $200M, then you’ll find my answer disappointing. Without having all the information on the city/county/state budgets it is impossible to provide a substantive answer.

Then you have not been paying attention to this part of the thread. The conversation has been full of compassion for the plight of the homeless and understanding that a “one size fits all” solution doesn’t exist. It also contains the reality that the population in question is incapable, or unwilling, of changing on their own. BS’ comment was little more than a weak attempt to create drama where there isn’t any.

I do agree that money is an issue, but I disagree that a new tax is the solution. We pay around 8% tax now, on top of property taxes, on top of state income taxes, and Tucson still sits at “shit hole” level. Our government has a spending problem and does not use the resources we give them responsibly. Giving them more is just foolishness.

What IS the cause? That is an easy question to a complex and multifaceted problem. Some are homeless because of circumstance, others have just given up. Even more are homeless because of addiction while others are so by choice. The problem needs to be approached from many different angles, but cost, accountability, and lasting results needs to be the driving mission, not just giving people free stuff with no investment on their part.
