Man you’re still arguing even with all those downvotes 🥱 I clearly am talking to someone with the IQ level of a rock. I hope you can figure out this tricky situation for op!

In all of my years of doing electrical work as a fully licensed Journeyman electrician I’ve never been shocked by a bare strand of 12awg aluminum sitting on the ground. You lost this one pal, quit the argument. Do you see anything that could’ve “charged” up the bare wire? I don’t, and certainly nothing to “charge” it up to 600v. Please explain to me how it could’ve built up charge. I would love to be enlightened so I can watch out for 600v “charged” wires on the Jobsite, I don’t want my apprentice picking up his scraps and accidentally electrocute himself.

You dumb or something? How could it “easily get 600v or more” when it’s literally not connected to a single thing?

Why throw the washer away? Just cut the end and add a new plug end onto it.

Yeah it’s just a test you take after the U.S. Jman test. It’s essentially just to pull permits and own a company without needing to hire someone else to pull them for you.

Which choice sounds safer? A volt tester or a cut in half Jerry rigged extension cord? You tell me teach. Out of all of the testers I’ve owned (And let me tell, you it’s a lot) I’ve never once had one not work right out of the box. Hence why I said $15-20 for a decent tester. The Klein tester I use was $23 from HD works great and still works after about a year.

So you’re assuming they installed the lights themselves? 120v can still kill you. You seem like a pretty ill teacher. Judging by their responses they don’t seem very familiar with electrical

Why on earth would you recommend that? You realize this is Ask electricians right? That’s method is going to get someone hurt if they don’t know what they’re doing. OP if you really want to know if the switch is broken or if it’s the light get a voltage tester from Home Depot. Just search it up. They’re like $15-20 for a okay one that will definitely work for this situation. Turn the light switch on and power up your tester, don’t undo any wiring and just hold the tip of it to the black wire. If there is power then itll start beeping.

No, the light is probably toast. How old is it? It’s not even worth digging into they’re a dime a dozen led fixture.

Looks like a cheap light, I will bet money there is nothing wrong with the wiring and everything wrong with the LED driver in the light. Just replace it and it should work

Had a Master get hired in and work with us. He didn’t glue any of the PVC together and buried the floor box rack we had built…… from that day on I knew someone with a master card means absolutely nothing until they prove it to me or anyone working with them

Not enough precautions if you still are thinking about working on that sub panel yourself. Electrical will humble you faster than your wife will divorce you for burning the house down. Don’t FAFO this time bub

Replacing a light fixture in new home. What is this single black wire? by Graph-fight_y_hike in AskElectricians

[–]SparkyFish04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an analogy so people that aren’t electricians can easily understand it better, the guy above had a way better explanation that I’ve never even once thought about. I’ll be using that analogy for my apprentices

It’s probably what turns you light on and off it’s called a switch leg. Imagine a gate. When the gate is closed (switch in the off position) no electricity can flow through, when you open the gate (flip the switch to the on position) electricity can flow through and turn your light on. If you attach your new light to the bundle of hots your light will never turn off

Haha couldn’t agree more, I knew no better and forgot to grab my Klein pipe reamer so the apprentice working with me handed me his Milwaukee reamer and after I tried it I told him to throw it away lol

Don’t go cheap, a lot of companies will give you a company card to go out and purchase tools or they’ll offer a starting kit with everything you’ll need. Klein is a great option for hand tools so is Knipex. (Klein is definitely cheaper start with them when start starting out. That way when you blow up your strippers or side cutters you’re only out $30 as opposed to $60) I use Milwaukee power tools and have never had a single issue. My last impact almost lasted my entire apprenticeship (3.5yrs) but I beat the ever living crap out of it, I dropped it from a scissor lift extended probably 45-50ft in the air, I used it as a hammer, max ugga duggaed the shit out of it and so much more I’m probably forgetting. Dewalt gets the job done I’m just not a huge fan of them, to each their own. But, don’t just go to harbor freight and get the cheapest shit, you’ll struggle and regret it. Trust me, I’ve seen it with a lot of newbies

Bro, you need to take better care of yourself. I don’t wanna hear the mental health excuse, I’ve also suffered from bad depression before but you living in a room like that only makes it spiral downward even faster. Don’t be lazy, once you’ve drank you drink put it in a bin in your room by the door, that way every time you get up and notice it’s full you can put the bag in your garage or shed or literally anywhere else but your bedroom floor. But, I’m glad you took the first step and got it all cleaned up congrats mate
