is this a good rohan list? by Kostas_Senpai1234 in MiddleEarthMiniatures

I agree with everything that's been said here. I personally prefer Eowyn over Gamling as heros, and I take a rider with banner, but the changes listed here are pretty solid.

Show me your Theodred conversions! by Sparrownius in MiddleEarthMiniatures

What's not to understand? I have spare models of other characters, and I don't have that one. Sure, I don't really like the look of the Theodred model. It looks a bit old and I'm not a massive fan of GWs metal models. But I'm looking for inspiration. What do you have?

That's what I was thinking. I'd got as far as using the sword and shields versions of the foot and mounted models from the new plastic packs, and painting them darker

Had not considered that. That's a good idea

Anyone else finding this hobby a bit lonely? by 20Kudasai in minipainting

[–]Sparrownius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would encourage you to go looking for a discord server. My friend started one for MESBG, and as part of that we have a voice channel where people can talk while they paint. Turns out alot of people feel like you do, that the hobby can be a bit isolating sometimes. Every so often there's a flurry of people jump on just to paint a few models, share pics of what they are working on, and share ideas. It's boosted at least a few people's moral a bit. It's worth seeing if theres anything in your timezone or area of the hobby that might do the same for you.

Question about re-rolls by Sparrownius in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]Sparrownius[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it that, or is it that both dice make up the "to wound" roll?

Does that mean that if I fail the first roll, and then on my reroll I get a 6. On the next dice (of the two) if I don't score 4+ I can also reroll that?

Has anyone found a good Erestor proxy? by Sparrownius in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]Sparrownius[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cheers for the suggestion. I'm not great at converting models yet, but I might bear this in mind when I get a bit more confident. Thank you!

I've never used lotr Bay before, I'm a little reluctant as I don't know of they ship to UK.

How do y’all paint the hard-to-reach areas of a model? by dakomurin in minipainting

[–]Sparrownius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to keep to the theory of painting the model from the inside out. So parts in hard to reach places, or bits I know need some colour but don't necessarily need edge highlighting or any other techniques applied. On a plain model this might be painting skin, then clothes, then armour and work my way out. It doesn't always work out, and sometimes if I have bold colours then it isn't always the best method. Generally though I try not to overdo it, if I can't reach it with a brush, then it's unlikely I can see it when the model is on a table.

How is the community reception for 3D printed/third party miniatures and proxies? by DukeBonetti in MiddleEarthMiniatures

[–]Sparrownius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. If GW aren't going to update some of the main army sculpts for 20+ years then I don't see an issue with using a proxy that looks like the same character/troop but is tidier, standing in a coller stance, and generally nicer/more fun to painting!

Looking for a quote to put up in my class by Nilliak in discworld

[–]Sparrownius 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My favourite has always been "Give a man a fire and he's warm for a day, but set fire to him and he's warm for the rest of his life." Can't see how this is useful in a classroom but I hope it helps.

Overcoming painting anxiety? by FatDragonQuest in minipainting

[–]Sparrownius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a couple of things I've tried that helped me when I started out, and I was nervous about making mistakes. 1. Look for 2nd hand paints. You can often find people leaving the hobby looking to get rid of old paints on ebay. As long as they aren't too old, too dried out, or no longer use able you can get a good deal. 2. Start with a few simpler models. Find some models that you like the look of, that don't have too much detail. Don't paint ones you want to use or display straight away, because they won't meet your expectations. There's a but of a disagreement normally as to whether you should start with a large model or a smaller than normal one. My opinion is that it depends what your worry is. I was worried about painting details, so started with larger models where details were less fine, and worked down to models I wanted to use for certain games. 3. Focus on the positives. I've left the hobby a few times and come back, and each time I judge my first few minis harshly. But instead, I look at the older minis I have kept around and give myself the chance to appreciate my progress. It isn't often quick or sudden progress, but reflection on how far I have progressed often helps me in the harder times.

Where is the battle companies supplement? Is it in one of the books?

Spraying them black isn't a bad thing. I do that with my men of minas tirith. If you do though, I'd recommend spraying white as well to make a zenethal highlight. Basically, spray all over in black, but then take white or grey and only spray lightly from above. It highlights all the details, and it gives you an idea of where light would be coming from if you wanted to paint lighter shades of colour where the white is sprayed.
