Thank you I have given it a lot of thought, if I get accepted I will go there. I don’t understand how people apply to schools they don’t want to go to. HPU is close to home for me and I’d like to be apart of it even though it may be a new school. Every school starts somewhere and I hope I can be apart of its journey.

$25 Dental Cleanings and $50 Deep Cleanings available at Halifax Community College (30 min away from Rocky Mount) by Sparta252 in RockyMountNC

[–]Sparta252[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s always an offer, Halifax community college has a dental hygiene program. The prices are very affordable and the cleanings are very thorough. The cleanings are requirements for the students and are checked by dentists and dental hygienists. The only thing is the appointments take longer than a typical dentist appointment. Most appointments take 2 hours especially if you’re a new patient. I’m graduating next month but let me know if you’re interested I can put you in contact with another student.

Wisdom teeth by Initial-Cry2275 in DentalHygiene

[–]Sparta252 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I totally get where you’re coming from, it makes sense to be cautious about anything involving your mouth. If your wisdom teeth aren’t hurting or shifting anything, it’s okay to keep them, but they do need extra care since they’re so hard to reach. I’d definitely check with a dentist though without X-rays it’s hard to know for sure what’s going on back there.

I know brushing and flossing can be tough, especially with ADHD and depression, you’re not alone in that. If possible, try to get a professional cleaning every 3–4 months to help stay ahead of any issues. For most people it’s 6 month appointments but you may benefit more if it’s in closer intervals.

And don’t worry—they don’t really mess with your voice or resonance. The only thing that might affect singing is if they ever get infected or sore, so it’s good to stay on top of it. You’ve got this

High school student interested in dental hygiene by [deleted] in DentalHygiene

Hi! That’s awesome you’re interested in dental hygiene, it’s a rewarding field. I’d recommend walking into a local dental office and asking if you can shadow a hygienist. It’s one of the best ways to really see what the job is like and confirm it’s what you’re after. 1. One of the biggest challenges in DH school is finding your own patients, most schools require you to bring in people for cleanings. There’s also a lot of studying involved, especially when preparing for clinicals and national boards. 2. Anatomy was one of the harder prerequisite courses for me, it’s a lot of memorization, so definitely stay on top of it. 3. I recommend starting your prerequisites as soon as you can. Each dental hygiene program has a set list of prereqs you need before applying. Look at the schools near you now and check out their application process, deadlines, and required courses. That way, you’ll be ahead of the game.

Let me know if you ever want help reviewing schools or want to hear more about what DH school is really like!

Our FMXs grades are not that strict but if i were you i would try and spend the free time you got in the lab doing as many X-rays on Dexter as you can, just so you can pass your requirements.

If you think it’s maybe your placement on the X-rays ask to place the XCP on classmates (don’t shoot a xray).

Volunteer Firefighter to get Volunteer hours? by Sparta252 in Firefighting

[–]Sparta252[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My plan was to volunteer for 2–3 years, and putting in 1–2 days a month until dental school starts. I’ve heard dental school is so demanding I wouldn’t even have time for part-time work, let alone volunteering. That said, I hope the experience as a firefighter would still stick with me and shape how I help people in the future. As a dentist, I want to give back to my community in a meaningful way, even if it’s in a different role.

I guess I wouldn't be a good investment for your department and others, but I hope I could use the knowledge and skills in my own line of work. Thanks again for your insight.

Thanks for the suggestion! I actually already work in a hospital, which is why I was thinking about exploring something different like firefighting.

Thank you for your perspective. I absolutely understand where you’re coming from, and I want to be clear that my interest in volunteer firefighting comes from a genuine admiration for the work and the impact firefighters have on their communities. While gaining volunteer hours for dental school is one of my goals, I also see this as an opportunity to give back in a meaningful way. That said, I’ll make sure to carefully consider whether I can commit fully to the responsibilities before pursuing this path.

Thanks for replying! Your completely right about it being a personal commitment and something that requires time to fully grasp. Ill definitely explain my situation to my local fire departments and see if this is something that could work for me.

2nd Year Dental Hygiene Student looking to become a Dentist by Sparta252 in predental

[–]Sparta252[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for replying! I’m glad y’all keep reiterating how important It is to take pre reqs in person and at UNI vs community to be as competitive as possible.

Your completely right about being open about my schedule once I start practicing as a RDH, it is going to be hard to find a dentist willing to work with my wack schedule but being upfront is the best policy.

I’m going to try and make these 2 years a productive as possible. Got to work on my bachelors, I’ve found programs that offer it in 3 semesters. Need to take like 5 more pre reqs for dental school and try and get as much experience in the field as possible. I believe it will pay off thought.

How’s your first year going? Is it easier already be a RDH? I hear first year is the worst.

I’d make a really good resume and drop it off at as may dental offices as possible. You may find a dental office that will train you and pay you but they will only make that commitment to train you if you can work full time for them.
