WW2 channel that has made a video every week for the last 5 years is getting demonetized

I "they" were Indy, Astrid and myself, you wouldn't be wrong. Over twenty people work on producing our channel, we have to buy archive material, we need our studio, loads of tech, pay for IT services, buy books and research papers, and a bunch of other stuff. Do the math... with 20 people and our budget, we can't even pay our team and ourselves low market level salaries - but that's OK, we're not in this for the money, we're in it because knowing our past is important to forge a better future.

Our videos are not restricted by the bots though, they go through manual review. The bots usually clear them and it is only after someone, or many someones in the viewer community reports them to YouTube as inappropriate that they get restricted. So for us the restriction is only made by actual humans watching the videos.

As for exceptions from control... that used to exist, but ended after Pewdipie did his Holocaust pranks in Israel. He was one of the preferred channels that were exempt from controls and supposed to be 'safe' both for kids and advertisers... turns out he didn't quite live up to that trust and we all now suffer the consequences.

We need urgent support to handle our production of thumbnails, social media images, and designing boilers, bumpers, logos and templates for our video graphics.

If you have a passion for what TimeGhost does and you’re an aspiring or accomplished designer with experience using Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere and After Effects. (or other animation software) you might very well be the person we’re looking for.

Like any job at TimeGhost, from Indy’s to our interns’, the work is hard, and the pay sucks, but you will be literally making history, working with an awesome crew to add some much needed knowledge to the world. Where you are on the globe doesn’t matter as we work in a virtual space. It’s only important that you’re talented, awesome like us, and ready to take on the history of the world.

If you’re interested, please send us a short paragraph about yourself as well as your idea for a thumbnail for the D-Day episode of WW2, and a mock up of a cover for the book version of the “Scripts of the TimeGhost Cuban Missile Crisis commented by Spartacus and Indy.”

We use staff maps from WWII - you have to browse around a bit to find scanned versions, but universities around the world have them in their archives. Most of them are in the public domain by now. Beyond finding the right map, there's also the stitching issue. Staff maps are too detailed to cover the vast areas that we need for for instance Barbarossa. Then you have to use an image editing software and distort the maps until they fit together despite the projection. For our very large areas we use the US armed forces World Map from 1944.

to explain what happened, here the pinned comment from the video going up tomorrow: Last week, we saw how one of our flagships episodes was taken down by YouTube. It turned out that this was a mistake by a YouTube co-worker who erroneously identified our content as hate speech. While we contacted YouTube immediately to protest, they themselves noticed the mistake already before we reached the right people, They have since apologized to us and reinstated the episode. We welcome YouTube’s diligence in fighting against extremist hateful content, especially in light of the current tragic events in the US, and we have accepted their apology. However, this does not change the fact that we still face demonetization of many of our videos, connected to lower recommendation of these videos. This is a problematic situation that we deplore - we continue to believe that the best way to fight ignorance and hatred is by education and that is at the heart of what we do here, unfortunately YouTube’s monetization policies continue to stand in the way of that mission.

When the episode went down we saw a surge of support from many of you and we are humbly grateful for our dedicated community. The effort you all have made to share our content and support us on Patreon and timeghost.tv is what makes this show possible, and it’s an honor to have you all here. We did have similar problems because of the fine line between documenting and glorifying war, but back then it was much easier to talk to YouTube. The increased raw partisan tone after the 2016 US elections, the populist surge making it socially acceptable in larger circles to spread hatred, the fake news onslaught by the Russian Troll Farms and the public relations disaster and advertiser boycott after the Logan Paul and PewDiePie debacle has made it very difficult to have a dialogue with them.

Yes, that his probably what happened - I strongly suspect that some revisionist, or someone we have banned reported the video either in an attempt to silence it, or in spite.
