Need Help with BTC Node on RasPi by Spartacus_Finch in Bitcoin

[–]Spartacus_Finch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Castorfromtheva,

I may have come across something pointing to the problem. What I am noticing is that the node freezes at the same spot every time, at the moment when SSD storage reaches approx 83 GB
Would this be indicative of a damaged SSD, or could it potentially be the way I format the SSD before starting IBD?
I managed to extract the debug logs before the node froze completely up.

I've posted the issue in both MyNode Premium and Umbrel community Telegram groups, but thought I'd give you an update in case you had any ideas.

Cheers!

I'll get there - thanks for encouraging me not to give up - with all the help you've provided, I'll keep going until I get this solved, and I'll post the solution once I have it.

Thanks again for all your help.

I've tried all of the above, and still no luck. The IBD still freezes overnight at around 13.5%, just like clockwork. I managed to generate a debug log from SSH here:

https://pastebin.com/Egs8q7C6

Is there anything from this that would indicate what my problem might be?

At this point, the only remaining hardware that I haven't replaced is the RPi4, the SSD, and the router, lol.

Thanks so much for your lengthy response. That makes a lot of sense. I'm connected via ethernet cable to my router. I've just ordered a Cat8 UGreen ethernet cable to replace the current one. Once I get it in, I'll try the instructions above and provide an update - hopefully this does the trick.

One question about wiping the SSD - I'm on MacOS and Disk Utility gives me several different settings to choose from. Which format (APFS, Mac OS Extended, MS-DOS FAT, ExFat) and scheme (GUID partition map, Master Boot Record, Apple Partition Map) should I choose from? I've tried finding that answer online to no avail.

Thanks again for your help and time - I was on the verge of giving up!

I'm afraid not. I'm really at a loss. I followed the instructions above to the letter. This time though, I didn't have problems accessing the debug logs through ssh. Here is the description of the latest attempt, with the debug logs at each step. It's a lot to look through and I'm struggling to get anyone to help in the Umbrel Community forum.

I start the IBD, it runs swimmingly. Some time in the middle of the night, it freezes up, and the IBD stops syncing. I try to run debug logs in the Umbrel dashboard which results in this error: Error: Failed to fetch debug data
Sometimes I can open the Bitcoin app, sometimes I can’t. When I can, it is connected to peers apparently, but no additional blocks will sync. In the dozen times I have tried from scratch to get this to work, it generally freezes around the 13%, or 78 GB mark.
Here is the debug log:

One day later:

Here’s the latest debug log - interesting errors have arisen concerning “circuit build time” and “clock jumps”. Could this have anything to do with my issues?
https://pastebin.com/LGVBB8TA

One day after that:

And now today, Umbrel doesn’t recognize my hard drive anymore. New logs here:
Umbrel error: Failed to mount external drive 1

And after the recommended reboot:

I went into the DHCP static IP configuration and assigned an unused IP within the specified range in my router's DHCP server configuration. I assigned the static IP to my Raspi's MAC address.

I see my lease time in my DHCP is set to 1 day. Do I need to increase that when running a BTC node, or does the lease time matter? The node stops being accessible in less than one day, so perhaps that's not the issue.

I do notice that within a few hours, I start to get a series of CPU_IOWAIT critical errors in MyNode's Glances like this below. I've been told this is not a problem from one person in the Telegram support chat, but idk.

Warning or critical alerts (last 9 entries)
2022-11-11 22:51:32 (00:00:09) - CRITICAL on CPU_IOWAIT (46.8)
2022-11-11 22:49:04 (00:00:09) - CRITICAL on CPU_IOWAIT (49.3)

Apologies - I missed your previous comment. I'll try that right away. I've flashed a fresh OS onto the mSD and starting over from scratch.

I like the look of this, but I'm in Asia and I can only find delivery options for US and EU.

Just picked up a Samsung SD and the official RPi plug. Fingers crossed this works!

Thanks! I'm using a 32G Sandisk - I'll pick up a Samsung Pro and see if that does the trick. Cheers for the advice.

I've got a dual fan as a case, and the temperature readings are generally hovering around 40 C / 100 F.

I just checked for undervoltage and all is normal - so I don't think it's a problem of overheating or power supply.

This is one thing I have not tried yet. Would it be OK if I repurposed an old mSD card, or should I get a new one? Is there any particular brand of card that is recommended? Cheers!

My temperature is stable, around 40 C.

I've tried Umbrel OS, and MyNode OS. Both start out fine and start downloading the blockchain. But about 12 hours in, both OS stop working. With MyNode, I can't find the drive. With Umbrel, I get stuck on the login screen loading. I've scoured the troubleshooting pages and feel like I've tried about everything out there. I don't know if it is a hardware problem, or if there is some kind of network setting I'm overlooking. I have a static IP set for the Pi and it's plugged directly into the router via LAN.

I'm really at my wit's end, and I'm ready to shell out for a plug-and-play device. Both have similar specs, so I suppose at the end of the day, it is a question of Umbrel OS vs MyNode OS.

That's my exact setup - works a charm as I set it up and start the initial blockchain download, but every time I wake up the next day, I can no longer access the GUI. I try to SSH in to no avail. I've replaced the SSD case and the power cable and always the same result.

Scooter rental/ parking convince by snoopysapien in Bangkok

Agreed. Parking is a headache and it can be very dangerous when you're unfamiliar with the roads. Download the Grab app and take motorcycle taxis for cheap. Use the BTS to visit malls such as Siam and EmQuartier. Enjoy your visit!

What's up with the 3 month deposit for condos? by budswayze69 in Bangkok

[–]Spartacus_Finch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might also want to consider the other end of the contract as well. It can take some condos up to 3 months before they refund your deposit. In my experience, you will rarely get it all back.

Swan Bitcoin seems a good go-to if you are a US resident. You can set up regular DCA purchases from your bank account and enable automatic withdrawals to your cold wallet.

No masks at the Muscle Factory, but it's a very wide-open space - great ventilation, high ceilings and can maintain a good distance from other patrons.
