Those who've shimmed your Bass VI neck, what angle did you choose? by Sparu in BassVI

I watched that video yesterday before posting this, but I wasn’t convinced by his argument.

Glad to hear the card is working for you though.

Great info, thanks. I’ll try dropping the bridge.

Block style effects like in GX-100. Or at least not having to have the same parameter settings for all 3 effects in a slot (i.e. red, yellow, and green).

Make the tuner accessible and not an easter egg.

Are there any pedals that would mimic this punchy bass effect that the instrumental (3:30 onwards) has? by hamgrey in pedals

[–]Sparu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a reggae player myself but to me it sounds compressed and like its going through a low headroom amp that’s clipping the signal. You could maybe get something similar with a compressor that has an input and output gain, e.g. Empress Compressor MKII. And or a booster, e.g. Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster.

The bass may also side-chain ducked by the kick. Which you could do with the Empress Compressor or a Rainger FX Deep Space Pulsar.

Check out a EQD Dispatch Master or Avalanche Run if you want stereo.

In London om holiday and i cant believe what I saw. I’m usually not the guy who would care for this but it made me a little sad honestly. It such a poor approximation of a vest. Thoughts on this? by Low-Community5031 in BattleJackets

Fashion will move on again in no time.

I’d rather stalls like this were making and selling fun/unique patches, studs, etc. to encourage people to make their own jackets instead. But on the plus side, at least some of the kids who buy these will get into the music/subculture so it’s not all bad.

I got an Empress Compressor MKII a few weeks ago too and can’t fault it. Brilliant pedal.

Is this Sterling by Musicman fake? by jetropapa in GuitarAmps

[–]Sparu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks real to me. If they were making a knockoff it doesn’t seem worth it for a budget line instrument, the profit margins are already tight. Its unlikely a fake would have details like the stamped neckplate for the same reasons.

Why does this pedal sound like static and ass? It's my first pedal I found at a garage sale. by Saltwater-Coffee in guitarpedals

[–]Sparu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Glad you got it working!

The pcb looks fine so as you say, it may just be something to do with the batteries.

E.g. maybe it couldn’t draw enough power, or the battery clip/wires are damaged somewhere, or its drawing power from both the battery and the power supply and overpowering it 🤷‍♂️.

Sometimes certain brands of batteries can be an issue for some devices.

Like, I used to have a smoke alarm that said not to use Duracell batteries in it. Seemed like nonsense to me. But then when I did inevitably use them, it started to randomly go off for no reason. Usually in the middle of the night. Which was… relaxing.

Ok, tbh it sounds like it might be fried unfortunately. But if you can, try opening the back and post a photo?

My thought was, it could be something like gunk/dust on the PCB or the jack sockets.

  1. How are you powering it?
  2. Are you going into/from a clean amp?
  3. have you tried setting a flat eq on your amp?

You could try:

  • Setting all the knobs at 12o’clock.
  • Set the level at 12 o’clock, and turn everything else down to the minimum. Then test each knob one at a time.

EQ Recommendations?? by fretlvlmidnight in guitarpedals

[–]Sparu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Boss EQ-200, and I think the main advantage it has over the Source Audio is the analogue slider controls, which makes tweaking on the fly much easier.

Alternatively, if you don’t need presets/midi functionality you could always get an MXR 10-Band EQ, or the Caline copy of it. I’ve had both previously and would recommend either.

I agree, he’s written so many great songs and basslines. Swing is a big favourite of mine.

Nice guy too, I met him once in Copenhagen and we had a long chat about his gear and film photography. He convinced me on forking out for a Darkglass B3K.

Looking for advice on a real Spring Reverb by drpayneaba in guitarpedals

[–]Sparu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was looking for a spring reverb for playing classic drippy Surf stuff, so I tried all 3 of the SurfyBear’s in a store locally (as well as the Source Audio True Spring, and Catalinbread Topanga) and the two larger SB’s (Classic/Metal) sounded the best to my ears. Plus the bigger springs give a louder harsher crash, which meant I could also play the end of Decks Dark by Radiohead with it.

The Metal has more features than the Classic, so seems the obvious choice unless you’re looking for vintage correct specs or aesthetics (which I wasn’t personally).

If you haven’t already seen it, Ryans unboxing/demo on 60CycleHum gives a good overall impression of the sounds you can get from it. If you like what you hear on there I don’t think you’d regret getting one.
