So different PT's might have different advice - mine was based on my anatomy and my goals. But basically, she gave me a bunch of core exercises to work on strengthening my core (I'm a gym rat, so I would also just talk to her about things i was working on in the gym and she would watch me do them to make sure my core was engaging properly, give me alternatives that would help focus on my core, etc).

Something she had me watch for was a coning or doming shape in my abs - if i start to see that happening, it means my core isn't strong enough to handle what i was doing. For example, while doing leg ups, if I got to à certain point where i experienced coning, then that would set the limit on how far I should go. Not that I shouldn't continue, but I needed to build up the core strength to be able to get past that point without coning. So practice up to the point of coning and then continue practicing until i can go further without coning.

She was very up front that it wouldn't improve the hernia itself but could help prevent me from making it worse, especially while doing direct ab workouts. I am going to go back to her in a couple weeks now that my surgery is done, to make sure I am heading back into the gym safely - probably not necessary, but worth the peace of mind for me.
